I have a bull bar and nerf bars. That being said, I completely agree with your opinion. I use my 2017 Tacoma for mainly hauling and towing. The only offroading I do is going to new fishing spots were roads can get pretty muddy as well as hunting camp trails were ground clearance and overall vehicle protection is not needed too much since trails are fairly flat and wide. Good vid!

Thanks buddy! People can still get offroad if they have nerfbars and those other things and have tons of fun (since most of us aren't doing crazy offroading anyway), but if they do get hungup on something then it's probably going to ruin their day. 😀

I agree with all your points. I believe the TRD CAI was meant for super charged engines. However, some have claimed performance gains, more like a placebo effect to me. For that reason I got a snorkel and an AFE dry drop in reusable Filter.
@Tacomaholic6 жыл бұрын
I'm sure the TRD CAI (and even other aftermarket ones) might get you a few more HP, but that's nothing you are really going to be able to notice with the Tacoma. Snorkel is the way to go for offroading. 👍
@sgrisez6 жыл бұрын
I have a K&N on mine. I won't talk about HP gains (because I'm not sure there are any), but I can say that I see significant MPG gains. On a typical 3/4 of a tank I get about 200 miles with the factory intake. With the CAI I get about 230 miles. When I put the homemade bed cover that sits just shallow of flush with the top of the bed I get 250 miles. Overall, when you remove the factory air box that is designed to reduce engine noise, you'll notice that the airflow is significantly restricted compared to the CAI. That restriction impacts performance. For me, I see it in MPG.
@Tacomaholic6 жыл бұрын
I'll take a few more MPGs any day.
@MotoErgoSum6 жыл бұрын
I suspect that's because of the improved throttle response and increased power. Normally the ECU would detect the improved air flow and boost fuel to keep the AF ratio the same. I'd bet you're staying at lower RPMs due to the bump in low end and mid-range torque. Less gear hunting from the transmission to get the vehicle moving helps a lot.
@grindstone49106 жыл бұрын
Stock '13 TRD Sport with 265/70/R17 AT tires, I get about ~320 miles out of a tank before the light comes on. For me, I don't see any benefits.

100% right about the bull bars. They might be okay for moving shopping carts out of the way, but if you ever wrecked into anything, it will bend right into your front end and cause more damage than if you just used factory bumpers!
@Tacomaholic6 жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy!
@staffoffice6 жыл бұрын
100% dead on! People think that if they hit something front end wise the bar will protect the plastic bits and the radiator. Actually the opposite is true! It will bend up and back destroying everything in it's path like grill,hood,headlights,fenders,radiator,plus you bolted it to the frame so now your exposing your frame to being torqued instead of just replacing your grill and radiator you're now looking at 6-9k for a new frame.

I had a grill guard come on my old ranger. I learned that I never want one of those things again. I hit a pretty solid dirt wall at the edge of the mud I was in. Not only did it kill my chances of getting out of the mud hole by just being too low, it also shoved through my bumper and grill. So it basically caused more damage than I would've had if I'd taken it off.

Real bull bars are fine. It’s the ones that don’t have actual supports that connect to the actual bumper. Those that you mentioned just get pushed in and wind up probably damaging your truck more than if you didn’t have them. A real bull bar will have support in the middle that runs in and actually connects to your steel bumper.
@aarongriggs36316 жыл бұрын
I think you are referring to a 'nudge bar'.. At least that is what we call them in Aus. A 'bull bar' is usually steel or alloy, and replaces the front bar entirely.. And these are made to with stand accidental hitting of wild animals and bush shrubs etc.

@mattlewandowski734 жыл бұрын
well used to be we called something a bit more substantial that connected to the frame via the bumper mounting bolts a bull bar but then westin and other companies started throwing it around as a marketing term. Same with nerf bars... nerf bar used to more or less mean what we now call a rock slider, while rock slider was specifically a piece that mounted UNDER the frame to act like the worlds skinniest skid plate :) again marketing got involved and we had to go changing our terms to differentiate.

@MotoErgoSum6 жыл бұрын
You don't get a bull bar to protect your bumper. You get a complete steel or aluminum bumper with bull bar to protect your radiator and engine from impacts from critters. Just getting a bull bar would be stupid. I use my factory 5" tube steps for detailing. It'd be awkward to stand with feet on the door sill. They're only a few inches lower than the door sill. Higher than the bottom of the frame. Might possibly crush into the bottom of the doors with a hard impact, but I'm not planning to do any rock crawling. For regular off-road they're fine. K&N intakes come with a surround that protects from splashes. Air inlet comes from the factory location but it goes into a sheet metal box. Definitely a bad idea to get an open air un-shielded cone filter.

So in your honest opinion if I am going to off road my Tacoma a ARB bull bar is pointless? @Tacomaholic6 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew thanks for watching. Americans and Australians use the term "bull bar" for 2 completely different things. Australian bull bars are a complete steel front bumper replacement and are a great thing to have when offroading. ARB is an Australian company and those bull bars are great! American bull bars are smaller pieces that just bolt underneath the front end of your truck. Here is a link showing a chrome American bull bar on a Tacoma: www.carid.com/images/westin/grille-guards/32-1600-toyota-tacoma.jpg

What is the point of adding that Weston piece of junk? That thing wouldn't do crap if you had an animal strike..... I want an ARB bumper as I think it would be an excellent upgrade regardless of how much I offroad. However I am now leaning more towards a 100 series Landcruiser for an offroading rig
@Tacomaholic6 жыл бұрын
I agree! Those style of bull bars made by Westin are good for mounting lights and that's about it. They offer zero protection and will likely cause more damage if struck by an animal, in addition to getting stuck on things offroad. Landcruiser sounds sweet! I'm going to get a 100 series..... I was going to get a Tacoma but if I'm going to want to "play"......if I have a relatively new Tacoma I'm going to be afraid to drive it off road. The Tacoma is also longer than a Landcruiser. If I am going to have a "play" rig I don't want to worry about it getting a bit dinged up. Besides, every where I've read the 100 series is solid and if taken care of, they last forever

They make sleeves that are water repellent for cold air intakes,they are very easy to clean, and stop all kinds of things from getting to your filter.

You made some good points but you left off the main 2-reasons why most people add all 3 of the Mods you discouraged people from buying. Looks and sound (air intake) . If you look and sound good, you feel good!!!

Just get the K&N factory filter and you are good to go. Which is not in the fender BTW, it's right next to engine cover..just unlatch the 2 clips and you are in. Good tips BTW! 👍

I put a "bull bar" on my 2015 Tacoma when it was a week old. Someone backed into it and pushed it against my bumper and now I have a nice stripe on my front bumper just like you. I tried buffing it out to no avail. If the bull bar wasn't there the person would have backed into my bumper so I guess it "helped".

I agree, alot of people get taken in by "off road" mods that are built to a price point, understanding the difference, and looks can be deceiving. If you can afford it a purpose built full bumper that increases clearance and approach angle, and that is built out of the right material is superior to the factory bumper, the "bull bar" is a step in the wrong direction. People should put the time into making informed decisions, and do a little research, and don't buy the 50$ accessories they'll cost you way more in the long run.

Thanks for posting Adam. Researchplanning is critical in selecting Tacoma mods. 👍

on the tundra tss stock running boards are very durable I've used them as sliders and they are not even dented, a bit scratched but other than that they are fine
@Tacomaholic6 жыл бұрын
Good to know. Where do they install?
@willholmes2756 жыл бұрын
Tacomaholic they install to the rocker panel with a brace for structural integrity that is connected to frame they hang below my frame. And if u know where I can get a skid plate for gas tank would be much help haha I was off roading and a log flew up and busted a hole in mine it’s currently at the dealership getting new tank Toyota says they don’t know where to get a skid plate for gas tank.

I agree with all these that you mention in this video. Especially the bullbar, personally I think those are just a poser thing....and CAI's are usually a scam on most modern cars, especially trucks....the only time I have every heard of anyone benefitting from a CAI are on high reving engines.

Gotta day I disagree with the bull bar, I have ARB deluxe bull bar and it provides more clearance and it replaces your factory bumper, I also got a thick proper steel skid plate. Unless you’re talking about those small dinky bars
@Tacomaholic5 жыл бұрын
In this vid I was talking about the American bull bars or brush guards. The Australian bull bars, specifically the ARB one, is an entire bumper replacement which of course is a great thing to have offroad.

I purchased my first veichle two weeks ago, a 2012 tacoma (absolutely love it!) And I want to protect the front from deer and hogs as there are a lot that live on my road and there is always the possibility of hitting one, doesn't help that the speed limit is 55. Anyways I remember you talking about guards that replace your whole bumper and guard your grille, do you have any that you would suggest? I don't need one for off reading, just something that could take a hit from a deer or a hog and my front end still be protected. Im also thinking about getting a bed cover any suggestions there? Any input I'd appreciated, Thank you!
@Tacomaholic2 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your purchase! Those full steel bumper replacements are designed for offroading since they are higher clearance, but they will take a hit from a deer far better than the factory bumper. Tons of choices depending on which one you like best. Here's a link to a good tonneau cover: amzn.to/3tCy22l

Tacomaholic I honestly can’t remember the brand. It was more of where I hit the poor bastard. Straight no angle and it was in my old Nissan. Can’t say to would happen that way twice. I demolished the kids car.......even worse, he didn’t have a license.

The factory intake isn NOT a cold air intake! The filter is right against the engine. I agree with your point about the exposed style, but there’s nothing wrong with the TRD CAI or the AFE or other boxed in CAI
@Tacomaholic5 жыл бұрын
The location of the air inlet for the intake system is what determines if it's "cold" or not. There are some good aftermarket systems but the stock system is fine as well.
@MH-go9wn5 жыл бұрын
Tacomaholic that’s not true. Most cars and trucks come with a ducted air inlet under the fender. That doesn’t mean they all have cold air intakes. When the filter is against the engine, the filtered air going into the engine is not as cold (less oxygen density) compared to an intake that has the filter further away from the engine. Toyota makes an actual cold air intake! www.trdusa.com/intakes.html Also, proper boxed in CAIs do not void the factory warranty.

At full throttle is the only time a CAI that has a bigger than stock filter has any benefit at all. At 1/4 throttle no measurable difference.
@Tacomaholic6 жыл бұрын
Sounds about right.
@stevensecure6 жыл бұрын
I do notice better throttle response and less throttle is needed in general after my exhaust and CAI conversion. I don't hit mud much, so I don't worry about getting crap sucked in, plus I have a shield around the filter. My Jeep with the same basic upgrades also gets better mileage at low rpm now. If I open it up, it sucks it down like bud light. I dunno, I'm gonna let yoda go wild soon and see what happens...

I might try a sealed aftermarket CAI and see what kind of effect it has on MPGs.

Australian bull bars are the real deal.
@oldterm69786 жыл бұрын
You are right most of the time. You did leave off the one thing a bull bar is good for that the front of your truck is not. Deer. I do have a bull bar on mine (aluminum). Not for off roading purpose but to prevent totaling my vehicle from deer hits. I live in a highly populated deer area. They will bounce of a good bull bar. But, will about total your car or truck. I am not to the point of taking my $30,000+ vehicle off road yet, but like the information. Agree totally on the side bars. I don't have any on due to their weight presently. I do have the factory running boards on just to be able to clean the truck on top without standing in the cab. Of course I didn't pay full price. I wish some one would make the rail in metal and incorporate the push outs in an aluminum (for those that don't need a true rock slider/tree pusher) they would come in handy in parking lots (keeping those other doors from scratching your ride). Good video.
@Tacomaholic6 жыл бұрын
I think you might be talking about a full brush guard ... which will certainly help against hitting deer and other things. The bull bar I'm talking about wouldn't survive a deer hit. Here's a link to one: amzn.to/2jEEpNx
@oldterm69786 жыл бұрын
Your right, I am talking about a full brush guard. Some companies refer to them as bull bar (example ARB). I totally forgot about the little flimsy push bar companies that call their push bars-bull bars (ranks right with the round, oval side even side steps that hang down along the sides). There are a few simulated brush bars that are worthless also, other than looks (you can hit them with your hand or pull on them and they'll bend).
@oldterm69786 жыл бұрын
Woobie, Some one takes your money every time you buy something.....your point?
@Tacomaholic6 жыл бұрын
Lol yeah ARB calls their entire steel front bumper a bull bar. 😀
