7:08 Dave keeping it real and making it a "we" thing. I appreciate that so much! BTW, I think the HG-2 is, in summary, a tube soundgoodizer. I own the Plugin Alliance software version and it just makes everything sound better regardless of what it is. I plan to get the hardware version. Been doing so two years, but I just feel so lazy to spend $3300 on a one-trick pony toy. As a music production hobbyist, it just feels so wrong, ha-ha. To me, it's hard to see the money in my account and know that such large sum for a middle-class guy like myself will be gone with the click of a mouse on something only I will be able to hear and enjoy. It's quite the mental barrier for me, even if I am aware that hardware versions are unrivaled by their software counterparts!

Have u done ur research on these pieces of gear before u make a remarkably stupid & elementary comment like the one u made...u have no idea what ur talking about... if u hear these units face to face ur jaw will hit the floor! Ive heard the HG2 on 2bus & there's some big mix & mastering engineers out there raving about how freakin' amazing they are & using them on a daily basis for mix & mastering applications... Also the Overstayer gear on 2bus, Synths & Drums especially, are incredible units... I'll definitely be buying one but that's besides the point... Watch some KZfaq examples on these individual pieces of analog gear... read some testimonials before u make stupid accusations that u can't back up! Dave is kindly sharing his engineer secrets & recommending gear that he uses to achieve big sounding mixes everyday... That's his profession, love & passion & don't u think he would think twice about recommending a piece of gear with his reputation on the line?! You could at least show him a little more respect by keeping comments like yours to yourself!

Hey yeah! The noise tho! Could you give some insight on why my more recent mixes which sound much better, have more noise. How can i get the same pull out of compression etc. without raising the noise floor up so noticeably? Thanks for all you do! - Doc

it is not noise, it is harmonic content, which is not the same. anyway it´s all about fashion and mood, personally i found myself downsamling to 12 bits, ¿why? cause it sound nice to my ears. Tomorrow who knows if this will be pleasant. In the past the arrival of16 bit samplers was a revolution over the 12 bits ones (we was looking for Hi Fi), today we work mostly in 24 bits but we downsample to 12 bits ¿? we are looking for Lo Fi :-)

Noise is not harmonic content. Noise is hiss and hum and generally garbage. Plugin manufacturers for some reason think that we like noise and hiss, so some analogue modeled plugins model noise. Frequently, you can just turn it off.

I'm a little way into this, having about 10 years experience in different amateur situations. I often wonder: you plug in the digital or real effect, and sometimes the difference is only in volume and "fatness". Might the same result be achieved by simply turning up the track and working the EQ a little? I know that's a little simplistic, and everything has its place, but there was a time when great recordings were made and none of these things were available. I suppose I'm saying that you can get great results with uncomplicated, inexpensive tools.

well these records were made on similarly great stuff back in the day. real analog gear. you have to remember that every DSP algorithm is just a mathematical model that is trimmed for efficiency. It has to perform in real-time. Real saturation can be analyzed and modeled BUT never replicated 100%. There is just too much chaos and beautiful imperfection involved to 1. get your head around it 2. package it into a model that runs on hardware we posess. Furthermore, the hardware where the algorithm has to run is not even built/optimized for audio; x86 architecture does everything but that versatility is also the Achilles's heel with FPGAs being much more efficient but then not being able to do much else). Volume, yes. But it isn't just a Volume that is applied to everything you must know. YOu can't just make everything 0.5dB louder or add a little .5k and say that's done. Especially not with how compression through overdrive works. Only certain parts of the signal are affected. Just look at dave's first example. The processed stuff sounds louder but not really coloured at all AND the signal is overall even a little quieter. That is because the compressor does many many very quick and subtle adjustments. Using an EQ would just make it sound different but never have this effect.

Black Box just sounds like a stereo enhancer which ywith Mathew Lane DrMS vst is exact same thing .. analog gear sounds meh 2016, theres lot of smart people and our tec is increasing i think digital is really improving or even tape emulators to add that warmth

What type of speakers are you on? Also KZfaq compression and logarithms are hard on tone. On reason I never left LPs :) My PC speakers are about $300 US. Which I could afford six of each!!!!

disagreed that using scientific explanation doesnt make sense. youre just a very inarticulate person. getting away from adjectives like warm or sweet (whatever that means) is helpful lets all strive to find better less subjective audio language i say!
