Thank you, this will be a great help for me. I don't collect Magic - but am going to be a big collector of the new Lorcana TCG (Disney) coming out in Aug 2023, and this way I can set myself up to be organized from the very beginning and hopefully avoid later stress.

I’m sure they will be if they aren’t already. The company often has a pattern of bringing an idea to Kickstarter, and then popping them on their website after the fact. I’m looking forward to Lorcana as well. I started another channel for it (@FDSDIS) but it’s dormant for the moment while I figure out a way to put more days in the week. 🤣

New sub here. I am a collector as well, and was attempting to collect every set with every version, and this became an extreme task during throne of eldraine due to the variants. It continued to get worse with each new set having more versions and the shear amount of new sets. I elected to pick a point in time, and not worry about finishing sets beyond this. I picked Alpha - Urza block. These set are where the reserve list resides, and should hold their value stronger than others, and in commander games tended to get the most often "what's that card do" events, which i like. So, I have an excel spreadsheet with each set broken into individual tabs, auto sums, and nice formatting that allows me to track my collection, in conjunction with 4 row binders to house all of the cards. When i am 50% + of the cards required for the set they move to a binder, when I am less than that threshold they stay in deck boxes inside 1600 boxes. Everything together resides in a gun safe for protection / accountability. What I enjoyed about this decision was that it gave me an end state, although extremely difficult, and most likely unattainable, at the same time as giving me huge amounts of trade (Mercadian forward) to trade towards just old stuff. I did keep newer cards that are specifically for decks (EDH), but I think I am going to take the next step and just play pre-cons, and streamline down to just the collection and liquidate all the cards held for decks.

This sounds amazing! I recognize there is going to come a point where I probably will do a similar thing. I wrote this episode almost a year ago now and I've already started to think about picking and choosing the sets I collect to completion. No matter what you do it will get to a point that unless you have unlimited time and resources, it's unsustainable.

*Note to other players/collectors* Binders for collections and binders for trading are usually different and should be set up differently. Collection binders are meant for cataloging your cards in a system that you understand and makes finding certain cards or sets will be simple... ... while trade binders are meant for current staples and cards of value that you no longer need or want. Usually set up in a way that other people can scan a binder and find a type of card fairly easy (without having to scan bulk or random cards that seem out of place)

This is probably one of the best organization/collection videos I've seen, and I too looked at many many many when I started collecting this past year. Funny enough, Our organization systems look almost identical. I found this way is the best way to organize cards. Though I only keep one binder for all sets (not a very avid collector), and then one general bulk box. I sort by rarity for when I want to sell bulk someday, and keep lands/tokens in their own small box for when I build decks. I started to keep rares, foils, and fancy variants separate as well such that when I amass enough I could also sell those in bulk for closer to what those cards may be worth as opposed to a standard amount for regular c/uc. Thanks so much for making this video! Hope it can be seen more. Also, the biggest fan of those dragon shield slipcase binders. They are so nice to use and so nice to look at!

As someone who also does sort by Collectors Number (I love having a binder for each set) there is a trick that helps at least me to sort them: 1. Sort them by color: Colorless, White, Blue, Black, Red, Green, Multicolor,Artifact, Lands 2. Sort Every "color pile" alphabetically. Now you have all your cards sorted by collectors number. Having gaps also makes it kind of exciting to collect the ones missing as you have a visual representation of your progress.
@beyondthedeckbox
@beyondthedeckbox 2 жыл бұрын
This is an excellent point! Only thing I would add is that every now and again Wizards will throw a monkey wrench into it and put the collector numbers of the new cards in the set first in WUBRG order and then do it for reprints. Mostly in Commander sets (which I realize isn't a common one to be collected in this way) but they sometimes do it in a reprint heavy set.

@@beyondthedeckbox I remember the same thing was with Battlebond. I totally forgot that specialty sets/products are not as strict with the pattern. But I do believe it's always "face cards", then new cards, then reprints in these cases.
@johngagon
@johngagon 2 жыл бұрын
There were a few hangups when I started this. While you can do this with single color, The lands are kind of all jumbled together. Also, be sure to ignore rarity. Land and Multicolor are a little less intuitive but at least the main group is ok. I also sorted tokens in their own spot and noticed that land and reprints seem to number off the end. Also, set booster do also throw in commander and the reprints in packs but yah, when finishing up a set. Thanks. Good point.

I know this video is older but I just came across it. I’m a recent MTG collector but have been collecting Pokémon pretty much since it was released over 25 years ago. I organize my Pokémon like this and I’ve come to realize that I’ll have to make some tweaks to MTG. The sets in MTG are SO much bigger than what I am used to and I don’t like having multiple binders for one set. Lol. I have the exact same cardboard organizer for my bulk and just thought I would mention that I like to put the lid to the box on the bottom of the box and store it in the cubby that way. I found that by doing this I don’t have to take the box all the way out of the cubby to go through my cards. Great video by the way!!

Nice video, thanks for sharing your method. I also enjoy the same binders for my most referred to cards. I've placed emphasis on deck building, so use those as a way to peruse cards that I feel have a chance of making a deck some day and have those binders by card types. A binder for creatures, binder for enchantments, etc - slots divided up WUBRG and sorted by casting cost. Then traditional binders for useful filler sorted the same way and lastly boxes for the bulk sorted by set, WUBRG, A-Z. I still have to re-sort from time to time as binders cap doing it this way so I'm always on the look-out for fresh takes, but it's good for stimulating the brewing process. Cheers!

I'm an old school player. I only collect 93/94 sets. I keep all my cards in Arkhive 400's. 18 in total. Black ones for the black bordered sets and white ones for white border. I have stickers with the set name (and a number if multiple) and set symbol on the end of the arkive and have those sitting on my shelves. Inside, I have everything sorted by collector number (I know, old sets don't have collector numbers per se, but I follow the ordering used by Scryfall. Finding cards and adding to my collection is super fast and maintaining this is super easy. Colors and lands have dividers with a small tag on them to make it easy to locate a color and estimate where a card is. All cards are double sleeved and ready to go, so no work their either. It took a while to settle on this, especially the double sleeving part, but it was absolutely worth the effort.

@beyondthedeckbox

I've done it both ways. For me, by set, then color makes it a little easier overall. That way I could just ignore alphabetizing them and it wasn't a big deal finding cards fairly quickly and maintaining it is easier. Color then set could work too, but my brain has a harder time wrapping around that. It all comes down to what is easier for you.

My system, just mine, but it works for me, 1: around 2000 cards in the chaff box, under $2.00 organized by set name, then card number, every once in a while when it's full, I'll go through and remove the cheapest cards, and any that jumped. I mostly keep this because I have a couple of poor friends that play, and they are always welcome to go card surfing. 2: the goods, this binder has my money cards and foils, mostly un organized, but I haven't gone through it in a while. 3: my deck box box, not much here just a 200 count to hold my commander, and modern decks, I have a Stanley 10 bin, if I ever decide to carry more. 4: my grab and go, a box full of double sleeved, foil tokens and basic lands, dice, a life pad, business cards, a Snickers bar, and whatever other odd items I decide I need for sealed play events.

Great video! I collect and play the long-dead (has it really been 20 years?!?) Star Wars CCG game from Decipher, and I was already doing pretty much the same as you with regards to putting complete sets in bound side loading binders, and extras in boxes. Since it's a dead game with only a limited number of new cards (virtual cards from the still-active Player's Committee), I was able to plan out how many binders I needed and what would go in each, for what I wanted to collect. In fact, just the other night I started my last binder with the Death Star II set! But the one thing I'm struggling with is combining all of the separate collections I have. I have my very worn childhood-era cards together in a few boxes, a few collections I bought out that are in minty condition in their own boxes, and then everything else I've bought since then in varying condition. I can't bring myself to combine everything together yet!

I got back into magic after a very (very) long break, and when I re-entered the market, I was taken aback by the choice of accessories (and when did people start using sleeves??!! 😆). The system I came up with from D&D is the same as yours - collector number, normal set first and then extended border type cards after ‘core’ set cards (they are still numbered). I find that the 480 slots (4x3) zip folios perfect for this. Bundle boxes hold duplicates. My commander folders, that’s a whole different kettle of mess.. I’m yet to work that one out. I’m not buying copies of the same staples for every deck I build, so I’m currently working out of zip folios, but I would love to hear from you on commander deck sorting, we think along a similar vein 👍🏻

As a commander player I need at least every edition once (or editions with many reprints), because when you search for a card, you can see too the multiple reprints in different sets. So i startet to collect every edition in different binders and the empty places from extremely pricy cards, I track on a wants List from every edition. I buy them after reprints or as a christmas gift. Cards from reserved list I buy only if they are needed in cedh. As a commander player I dont have interests in editions, I collect no alpha, beta, unlimited etc. duals only once. So mine system is pretty close to yours. But binders needs more place as boxes, and so the space is getting rare and my wife wants other solutions, because she needs too some space for pillows for guests or the iron etc. An absolute nightmare was strixhaven, because to much special/alternate/framebordered/ Versions makes the System difficult, because most cardbinders can take 350 to 400 cards, and then it gets difficult. I hate every set that its bigger, so I really dislike mystery Editions.

Yeah … I need to go back and reorganize after so long away from the game. I was primarily a deck builder without a vast knowledge of the cards, so I had everything sorted by color, then type, and in the case of creatures … subtype. Everything alphabetical within the group. Sets didn’t matter to me. I just knew I needed “an instant that does this, in this color” or a “white soldier that does this” and rifled through to see if I had such a card. Didn’t know if the card even existed. Rares or expensive uncommons were put in binders. Nowadays, I have all my rares scanned into an app (Helvault says I’m over $150k right now … cool). They’re still in binders for the most part. I have tens of thousands of commons, uncommons, etc if I want to scan those. I still may. If I do, I think I’ll just do alphabetically by type. Forget subtypes. I’ll know if I have anything via the app. Dunno. Still trying to figure it out. Have all the time in the world to think about it, not so much the time to DO it.

Hi there! Found this vid while searching how to organize my collection. Do you label your binders to know what set they are when sitting in your shelves?
@beyondthedeckbox
@beyondthedeckbox 11 ай бұрын
I don't actually. I use different colored binders and I remember "signpost" sets. (I remember Dominaria starts in the white binder and that War of the Spark starts the green binder, etc.). And since I have a general idea of how the sets released, I usually pull the right binder. (Usually, Strixhaven/Kaldheim/Zendikar Rising trip me up sometimes.). But I also think labeling is a great idea! I have a friend who does a similar set up as me but he uses white binders, and he printed off labels for the spines of the binders and they look really nice. I hope that helps!

I generally sort by color and put things of high value in binders and leave the rest in BCW boxes - I like this approach though. Do you just keep commons and uncommons in boxes like that too? I usually pull cards out like ephemerate, preordain, ponder, etc. since they're not really bulk.
@beyondthedeckbox
@beyondthedeckbox 2 жыл бұрын
I used to do it like that but I was always worried I was missing things like ephemerate and ponder in the bulk bin. Pretty much one copy of everything goes in a binder and everything else goes in the bundle box, whether it's a duplicate of a $20 rare or a common. (Admittedly the rare is usually double sleeved in the box.) Makes it really easy for me to find them when I need them. Thanks for the comment!

I have a binder for my rares/mythics but the rest are just laying in piles and boxes on my floor.

With a collection like that, I would suggest the bulk (commons and uncommons) in a box and all rares and mythics in a binder. Whether you put the bulk rares with the bulk or the rares, that is up to you. I still would probably do it by set and color to make it a bit easier to sift through. Hope that helps!

I have a question. Let's say you collected the full set of Kamigawa in the Quadrow binder, that means you have a half empty binder or am I wrong? How do you deal with it? Just leave it that way or am I missing something? Thanks for the answer! :)

I treat all the binders like one continuous binder. In your example I would leave a page after Kamigawa empty, then I will start Streets of New Capenna which will spill over into the next binder. Most sets do end up spanning two binders, but this makes it a little easier financially and spatially. Hope that helps!

@@beyondthedeckbox Thanks for the fast response! There is just one thing I am not sure about. Why did you say, that most sets end up spanning over two binders? Because in my mind the binder has room for 480 cards and a normal standard set has around 260 cards. Sry for the stupid question... Greetings from switzerland

@@ikeisthebest Not a stupid question at all! It's probably more around half are split over two binders. - The first set fits in Binder 1 - The second set starts in Binder 1 but spills over to Binder 2. - The Third set fits fully in Binder 2 - Fourth set starts in Binder 2 but spills over into Binder 3. - And so on. When you have variations in set numbers as well, it can affect it. It works for me though. I hope that helps!

Where do you go to find your background music, im thinking of doing content myself and I like your background music.

I use Streambeats. It's by a content creator named Harris Heller. It's on Spotify, Apple Music, etc. You also can go to www.streambeats.com and download the files if you want to put them in videos. All the music is copyright free. They keep adding stuff each month. Hope that helps!

How many booster do you open for each set?

If I were to guess, it's probably around 60-70 on average. I sell my duplicate cards to get credit to defray the cost a bit. That gets me very close to a full collection of a set. Usually I'm 15-20 cards shy at that point. Mostly rares/mythics with an uncommon or two I may have missed. But once I hit that point, I'd probably have to open another 60-70 to finally fill out that last tiny bit so I just switch to buying the singles. I recognize it's the least cost effective way to do it, but I love opening packs so I enjoy it.

When you’re an over complicating idiot, like myself, you have spreadsheets 😂

I have so many spreadsheets. As well as multiple accounts to various card collection management apps that I sign up for, start to use, and then never return.
