3 Realisations When I Stopped Buying Luxury

Let's not pretend.... I stopped because I didn't have the income to maintain the shopping. If I hadn't been forced to look at what I was up to then I probably wouldn't have directed any effort that way.
But I'm so glad it happened.
I cover the reasons why in today's video- some of you will relate to these and some I know absolutely won't.
The most liberating thing about it all is realising how much you can change as a person and how many avenues life has to offer.
It's funny how despite having a whole world of different opportunities we often find ourselves doing the same things and staying the in the same place. And sometimes that's nice- but it can also be so refreshing to broaden your horizons and branch out.
I still love luxury shopping. And this definitely isn't the end of it for me.
I have a little wishlist of items... but acquiring them isn't the most pressing thing in my week.
I also feel so much more appreciative and grateful for the experiences and items I already have- rather than just looking to the next thing.

My problem was always, I have no where to wear these things ... I love all the stuff and I have some pieces but they don't fit into my lifestyle ... I am an attorney in Chicago, I like clothes but court is zoom and frankly, I wear this stuff to shop for other stuff and maybe out to dinner twice a month where I'm like where do u put a 3000 purse ...on the floor, the table, a chair, a purse hook thing that I never remember I bought all that stuff and had to realize on my own that it didn't come with a side of the celebrity life style

That’s almost exactly my situation . I was a partner in a large firm and it wasn’t appropriate to flaunt expensive bags in front of colleagues and clients. Now that I am retired, I have even fewer opportunities to carry them. I live in an affluent town, but luxury bags/dressing in not the vibe here. I have to create activities/events where I can carry such bags 🤔

Totally agree. One influencer I follow lives in New York and Miami and has many events to attend and wear luxury items. I'm retired and live in Indianapolis (aka Naptown) where there are few events in my life to dress in designer pieces. At some point, I realized that it made little sense to own a collection of expensive handbags and shoes. Now I spend my money on travel and grandkids.

I only have a handful of designer bags, belts etc. from reading the comments I realise that I might have a different attitude to when and where is “appropriate” to wear them. I often travel with a capsule wardrobe and I’ve worn my Valentino crossbody on National Park excursions because that’s the bag I had with me. I wear a cute dress to walk my dog in the burbs because I think that looks a lot better and makes me feel better than wearing yoga gear all day every day like most people. I’ve been through phases of doing that, and honestly it just makes me feel like I never not wear pyjamas. That being said, most of the designer things I have are not the classic ones that everyone would recognize. I take care of them but I use them constantly, because I truly enjoy them, and I don’t baby them. If they wear out, they wear out from being loved which to me is great. Nothing in our house is kept for special occasions. The silver gets used for weeknight dinner because why not? To me, things that don’t get used I shouldn’t own, and I love using high quality things.

I stopped over 2 years ago and I’m so much more happier. My mind is clear of the constant want. Today I’m taking my kids out to explore some small mountain town in our state. I enjoy these little adventures more now.

I reached "saturation" with purses and jewelry. Now that I am retired, I live in leggings and rarely go out to an expensive restaurant that would warrant me being decked out. I also noticed that running around town without the need to go to work made my purse needs a lot smaller. I now wear a Lululemon "Everywhere" bag (fanny bag) and love that I am hands free. I have really embraced minimalism at this point. I also don't have a daughter to pass all my luxury stuff down to. So at this point, I am envisioning the "horror" of seeing my stuff being sold off or donated once I am gone. So why the h*ll did I put so much effort into purchasing them in the first place, just to have someone else enjoy them for a fraction of the cost.

Enjoy then while you’re here! That’s how I feel about my craft collection. Even if you had someone to pass the items too, who’s to say they would want them? Even enjoy them? Trust me, I’ve seen my friends sell off absolutely everything of their parents. Even things of value. They just don’t want it.

I think that when you have too much of everything, you cannot really enjoy anything. Simply because it's impossible!!! We always end up choosing those most loved ones. And, in the middle of the mess, we miss the fun of loving our prefered stuff. They just get lost in between.😵‍💫

I love this. I am in a similar place. The few items I am interested in are at such astronomical prices, I would not enjoy them. I will not buy a handbag for the same price it would cost to completely renovate my kitchen, or add on a bathroom. No that would not bring me any happiness, I would feel like a complete fool.

Some influencers put the majority of income to keep with others. I want a.. designer chair, lamp for my house. Or non designers. But some people buy properties, some prefer bags. I also feel like I have everything I NEED from bags, some clothing and I'll never follow the trend that change every few months. My bags must be practical. I totally see why you enjoy astronomical prices put you off. The wannabes cares about optics the most. Rich people I know have mostly expensive hobbies and so on but there is no bag that would impress them.

Totally echo someone else’s comment about how this video (and all of your content) is informative and well presented without appearing patronising. You make very logical points. And thank you for acknowledging part of the reason you don’t shop as much is because you have a decent collection. I find it so tiresome when KZfaqrs/influencers preach about not spending or having a “low buy” whilst sitting on collections worth well into the 6 digits 😒

I get that. I do think people mean well though- I think they’ve probably moved on themselves and are keen to bring people along with them- but maybe the execution doesn’t feel that way. I know I’m on my own little crazy journey and am sharing it for my own amusement- and for any old excuse to talk about this stuff. I do think it’s interesting so many of us are getting to the same points together- I actually love that a bit. We’re all totally different and at different points in life but share this xx

I purged my luxury accessories like a month ago. I didn't use them and was just holding on to them "just in case". I kept a couple of items I genuinely love and that really match my style. The other things are gone and I didn't even flinch. It's a great liberating feeling.

I am definitely oversaturated with bags and jewelry. I am done other than vacations. I am stay at home wife my husband is about ready to retire. We’re in our early 50s and I don’t need another Chanel bag to go to the grocery store in the pharmacy. I mean you can only carry one bag at a time. I have the classic bags that I wanted and it’s time to spend money on other things

Great video, Emma! You've helped me realize that my job is playing a role in my shopping habits. My job leaves me mentally drained by the end of the day so I resort to shopping as a fun and easy hobby. I have plenty of bags, but the problem is I also enjoy the experience or the hunt of finding my next new bag too much.

I totally understand! I had to reevaluate my identity since holding back on consuming. I do enjoy my handbag collection because I've kept what I love. I wear my bags everywhere from grocery shopping to dining out. I'm just enjoying what I have and I like it here

Agree. Also I find the quality just isn't there on current offerings. So it's a turnoff. It's also wise to be mindful of not being a target for a mugging / robbery, or to be followed home for a home invasion. Who wants any of that?

At least you got the champange and pastries for spending 5K. I tell you, the luxury service in Europe is way better than in the United States. This is one of the reasons, I shop in Europe for most of my luxury goods. I'm getting a better customer service and I save tons of money purchasing in Europe. But I agreed, I've stopped buying leather goods overall as the price hikes is outrageous and I don't find it fun anymore.

Think about it this way if you spend about 5,000 British pounds for a bag, it's $6,322.15 USD. Let's say you have 40 bags, that's over 1/4 of a million US dollars, which we know is even more because of the cost of a Birkin alone. The question every person must ask themselves is do you want to spend that sum of money on handbags, or is there something better you could do with over 1/4 of a million US dollars of you money?

I feel since you love researching and putting things together, you would be a good personal stylist and a interior designer. I'm happy you chose happiness over consumerism. It's better to have a few high quality pieces and a peace of mind rather then to chasing after logos.

This is one of very few videos on reducing shopping that I find relatable. No dramatic breakup, no big life changes. But the bigger my closet got the less sense buying made. I started asking myself what each new purchase would do that something I already own doesn’t. These days I buy stuff I love that is different and cool in my opinion. But even with the constant capsules and “limited releases” I seldom feel like I must have something new.

Love this Emma. I’m so over crazy buy just now. I think watching others irrational behaviour later made me have a long hard look at my own in regards to buying. Like you if I ever go out for the day shopping with friends or go to events I don’t want stuck behind a camera. It’s rare just ever do or ever have I am a bit of live in the moment that way. I agree… I’m an RN and it’s very mentally draining and also used to have a serious shopping addiction. It’s mindless but gives you that needed rush. I decreased my hours at work which in turn means less money but I don’t feel the need to shop all the time. I have the time and every to try to live and enjoy my life. 🤷‍♀️ id rather be relaxed and happy verses stressed out with the latest bag. ❤❤❤

I have also stopped buying luxury bags. I started buying in the 1990s for the quality. I am still using those bags and wallets and have no regrets in buying. The reasons for not buying anymore are I have enough and also the quality is not there (Chanel, LV). Now a days I will look at Coach occasionally as their quality is still very good.

Thank you for your perspective! I've been unable to travel and have as many experiences due to my partner being in medical school and residency and I suppose my interest in luxury was my way of wanting things and it being obtainable. I do expect now that we will be able to travel more that I would rather spend the money on experiences rather than the material. I don't have many bags but maybe for special occasions I could still want them. Gonna learn as I go and grow. :)

I haven't stopped, but I'm really slowing down, and I've started to buy secondhand. One reason is wanting to put the money towards experiences. We recently flew to Ireland, and I couldn't help but think about how comfortable we could make our trip if I saved money towards experiences versus clothes (and goodness knows I don't need the clothes). Another reason I'm slowing down is because the current bags in boutique that I really want have gotten so expensive. I've wanted a second classic flap since I bought my first 3 years ago, and I thought that 5k was too much money.... Well now they are over 10k... I truly have no idea if I'll ever buy one, but it does make me pause before spending 2-5k on a different handbag.

Luxury isn’t luxury anymore. Now it’s about influencers buying the next big thing and it lost its quality and enjoying the piece you buy.. plenty of amazing pieces at a 1/3 of the price and wearing a £2k bag isn’t fun as you are scared to damage it…

Absolutely. People look down on “fast fashion” when the “luxury” fashion houses are using the same materials and lowering the craftsmanship. Chanel bags are literally machine made.

I sold nearly 70% of my collections as I wanted the money out of them and tbh plenty of amazing beautifully made bags out there that don’t need me to advertise their name. Yes, influencers killed the fun and they're usually not even truly rich. They play a game to keep up. But we're special audience.. The majority of people don't follow those channels. I always laughed at trends for every season. I know which colors I like and look in the best. "IT" bag - I don't care. I'm not a fashionista.

I have 3 luxury bags and I love and use them for me. I don't luxury shop a lot. I am however very interested in getting very colorful small leather goods so I can use them in my bag and want to look in and it be all pretty and fun. I want to do it for me and enjoyment purposes not for anyone else to see. I think it looks fun and beautiful.

right with you on the experience. i started earnestly chasing QBs at Hermes during the pandemic because there were no vacations to be had so going to the shop felt like a trip (even though it wasn’t even a mile away 😆 i walked there from home 😅) but now that things are back to normal, i rather go on a proper trip with my kids than spend a fortune on a bag. i will still shop, but much more sparingly and no i don’t miss it as much as i thought i would.

Emma I have not purchased luxury (mostly handbags) in at least two years. We built a new house & priorities has shifted. I am more about experiences now. The prices & lack of luxury experience has influenced my choice along with maybe just growing.

I already commented because as a lawyer living in a climate with winters when I look like a teddy bear outside. Those edgy bags in our winters do not work. No use and no experience, no champagne. We don't have those stores. Ordering online or through SA or during traveling. That's all. EVENTS!!!! I totally see that. It's so vapid. No experience just mostly people who care about image. Smile number 4 now. People who are not even interested in you and your story. Your story means your story on IG, not life one. Admittedly, I don't own as much as you do but I feel like.. I have all I need. I'll buy some but I need functional bag. I don't care how they photograph because I don't take pics of them but they need to open up and close easily, have zipped compartment for keys, card holder etc. My phone needs to fit easily. Also I can only use truly colorful bags for a few months of the year. So when celebs in LA show me their outfits and bags my reality and needs are different.

I think it's helped that I've only started buying luxury items in the last few years when you definitely don't get the wine and dine experience people always talked about and the prices are so high that you really can't be buying a new bag or new shoes every few months. I'm only buying what I like because I like it and I keep a list of items I know I've wanted for a long time that I'm slowly picking stuff off of.

I personally enjoy a good preloved deal. But I’ve curated a lot over the last two years and start analyzing truly goes with ME. Also I work from home, go To the gym and 3 kids. I truly don’t need a lot of bags 😅

Luxury items don’t always have the quality I expect these days. I’d rather search in thrift stores so I’ll know how it will hold up after use. I recently ordered an expensive bag for an upcoming trip and was very disappointed. I returned it and pulled out a vintage bag that I got in a charity shop that I used daily for years and gave it a thorough cleaning. I’ll use that saved $200 on my adventure. I have a few expensive impulse buy items in my closet that I never wear..just not my lifestyle. I’m donating these items and keeping what I wear daily. I’m willing to pay premo for comfortable footwear but never keep a shoe that won’t give me a reasonable amount of wear time. If I suffer discomfort I find those shoes will languish in the closet because I paid too much to toss, knowing I’ll never trust them again.

I agree. Hauls seem much more frivolous, cringy and unnecessary. Especially ones from fast fashion and ridiculously over consuming products like fridge restocks. I love a lovely bag unboxing or a few items from high quality stores… but the others are meh

I'm with you. I'm tired of the hauls. And they're all like "haven't you bought this a thousand times before?". The old money esthetics is not helping these hauls, either. Because the purpose of it is buying less but quality items. So, if you got it, you got it, and there's only so many combinations of these items you can do. One particular time I even noticed the KZfaqr actually reuploaded the same Spring video from the previous year lol 🙄

Hi Emma, I really enjoy this video and honestly i totally understand you. I absolutely love luxury handbags. I am not bothered about anything else. I know I have ADHD and maybe this provides dopamine release 😅, however, this video and your points made me think.

you are looking for an experience of feeling rich but you are in fact getting poorer every time you spend thousands on a bag which costs a few hundred to manufacture. much better to book a stay in a five star hotel for a few days

‘Feeling rich’ isn’t an insecurity for me- as I’ve spent a good portion of my life being constantly told how rich I am- and I’m aware of my privileges. So that wouldn’t be a reason for me to buy. Indulging a frivolity, enjoying an experience of something I enjoy is the experience.
