Hi everyone, it's Eileen. For those of us who are into luxury items, we often justify paying more for the craftsmanship and heritage. But maybe, just maybe, there's a bit of desire to flex as well? While I don't buy designer pieces to show off, I did purchase certain items to validate myself and to cover up my insecurity. I remember when I finally got my first Hermes bag, it felt like a huge milestone-- ''I finally got the bag that everyone else dreams of getting, I've made it!" Or had I? The truth is, the younger me was very invested in impressing others and myself. I wanted to feel that I mattered, and I might have even secretly enjoyed the envy from others. So should we wear designer or buy luxury bags? I believe the answer lies in the intention. Luxury bags do generally have amazing craftsmanship, but if we're buying to impress, we'd always be one handbag away from our happiness xx

Thank you for watching this video about how I stopped trying to impress others by wearing designer brands. While I'm not planning to stop buying luxury completely, I've given up the idea of proving my worth with compulsive shopping. Flex culture is common nowadays, but we don't have to be part of it xx

I am 27 with a full time job. I could afford Chanel and hermes but instead of buying from these luxury houses, i invested on a property. I am now a proud owner of 4 bedroom 2 baths house. My first luxury item is a vintage Burberry trench coat, after that I decided to purchase a vintage LV petite noe bag (also second hand). I love them and wore them every time i go out. Even though i could afford brand new, i think buying pre owned is the best option for me since i want to retire early. A friend told me that it's not luxury anymore if everyone has them which is true. A lot of working and middle class women complain about the price increases of luxury hand bags but we are not really the target market for it. We complain because most of us can't afford to buy a bag every season. Thank you for your channel! Glad i discovered it and its nice to be reminded reality.

We actually are their targets, ironically enough. They build an easily accessible (as in anyone at any time can buy) image of illusion of wealth and with proper marketing they truly are able brain wash middle class which is overwhelming majority of people number wise.

I personally think we should simply purchase 1) what we genuinely like and 2) items that are of quality & made to last. I’m increasingly growing a disdain for fast fashion. If we stuck to these two rules of thumb, we really wouldn’t be buying a bunch of stuff. When we mindlessly consume, it keeps us on a perpetual cycle of never being satisfied.

I totally agree with you. As we get older, many does not really care what handbag you carry, what car you drive, or what jewelry you are wearing. Showing off just becomes arrogance and feeling high almighty I'm better than you attitude will only rub off the wrong way to people who doesn't understand the luxury world. I am now humbled and appreciate kind people and treasure family and health. Anything material can be replaced and should not be worshipped ✌️✌️

Thanks for an honest and insightful video. I've loved luxury items all my life and probably fell into the flex over the years, but now that I'm in my 60s, I buy things for me and me only. That's the good part of aging - we don't care what others think of us anymore, we care what we think about ourselves.

I have always bought things for me and items I really love (even in my 20's). Wholeheartedly agree that age can bring that to light even more . In my late forties I really felt I came into my own - know who I am, what I like/don't like, etc. Always be an original and do/buy what makes you happy. After all, this is your life to live 😍

I’m with you, I buy only to please myself, age 63. After trying to squeeze myself into the local Boho style for years, I went back to the classic style I really loved best. I feel like my genuine self again. I do buy luxury fabrics and materials (genuine leather) because my skin and feet need them. I get criticism for wearing silk, and skirts and dresses, but then I notice that person getting the idea “from elsewhere” to wear silk, dresses and skirts, too. I don’t care what others think of my style. All I know is that having to wear the local uniform of black and gray polyester gym wear would be soul-destroying to me, not to mention miserably uncomfortable, hot and sweaty. There is a strong anti-personal style, conformist-only (to the gym uniform) sentiment where I live.🙂

This is such a great video. And it's so true. Kylie Jenner has a net worth of $1 billion and her buying a Cartier diamond love bracelet ($45,000) is equivalent to the average US income ($60,000) of a little over $3.00. So to her, it makes sense that buying luxury brands barely puts a dent in her net worth whereas for most people it becomes about flex. Thanks for sharing your insight in this video!

You make a great point. An unfortunate thing that goes unspoken is being that she is considered somewhat of an influencer, she could easily have been paid to make such a purchase - the brand would consider it promotion / endorsement. Meanwhile regular people are spending that kind of money from their own pockets to flex.

You absolutely don't need to have designer items to look chic. Yes, a higher price tag tends to mean better craftsmanship, tailoring, materials etc, but sadly, that isn't always the case these days. It's actually really hard to find classic, well-made items at a decent price because there's no incentive for companies to produce such fashion - throw away fast fashion is a much better business model, especially if it's also very expensive. I actually think it's more difficult to wear designer items and look chic because - the most recognizable pieces often look tacky and cheap precisely because they're so recognizable.

I buy from the "fast fashion" labelled stores because if you look at the origin of the item, the manufacturer, etc. That $8 Walmart shirt is most likely LITERALLY the same as the $80 "ethical", "eco-sustainable" brand. I just researched Pact, which is supposed to be an ethical brand. Their manufacturer supplies items for H&M, Walmart, Gap and Zara as well and has had a few lawsuits for UNETHICAL (😆) business practices. Go figure haha. It's sad that we have to do SO much research these days to find truly great brands.

Thank you Eileen. I turn 60 this month, and have a very small collection of luxury bags and shoes. I use them all, don’t get any urge to buy new ones at all. Most are 10 to 34 years old. A stylish confident woman doesn’t need big name designer items to look fantastic. With regards to the money aspect, a long time friend of mine always says, “being young and broke is fun. Being old and broke is definitely not”. Good health, good relationships, comfortable home, is important. Not arguing the latest CHANEL, LV, bag price hike, and definitely not having anxiety over not getting a Birkin. Jane Birkin doesn’t even want a Birkin anymore. She could have them for free. She wore them to their destruction. Great videos!

From the Psychology of Money, when people see a fancy car, they are usually not jealous of the driver but they tend to imagine themselves as the driver. So in reality, people are less impressed with people who have wealth because they tend to not pay attention to the owners. But being at peace with what and who you have is the ultimate peace. Best wishes!

When it comes to fashion..purses to be exact, these days I've found that I reach for my good ol Coach leather purses more than I do my luxury ones. I just want to be free from babying my purse. And I have stopped purchasing them as well. Instead I want to purchase my second house and experience more memories and adventures rather than invest in a bag that'll just sit in my glass curio cabinet. Thank goodness I came to this realization sooner rather than later. Feels liberating not to succumb to trends.

I’m a new follower and I really like your videos. I have reevaluated my spending and the need to buy items because people I follow on social media have them. And I have come to realise that I was trying to fill a void in myself. I took a hard look at what I want from my life and I am finding other ways to bring joy into my life without having to spend money or purchase more possessions. Thank you Eileen for your honesty and for sharing your journey.

I wear designer for myself. It is to challenge myself to work harder and reward myself. This is like when my parents ask me to get A+ if I want an A+ life. This doesn't mean, I don't have very good personal finance and investments. I also only purchase luxury handbags, watch, and jewelry not clothes or shoes which have less depreciation value over time.

@@nurulnabilah6427 It's all about liability or profitability. Less depreciative valued materials are the best investments. In fashion, if you buy designer luxury apparel, it's best to invest in pieces like Chanel suit jackets or fur coats. Best to do your research before entering the luxe designer world as an investor.

I absolute love your videos and happy that you're on youtube. I came from poverty and worked 40 years w/ a decent salary that afforded me the opportunity to buy designer "anything". I thought that is what success meant. However, since I retired (62 yrs young), and started watching your videos, my focus has changed. I sold 6 Chanel & 1 Prada bag to Fashionphile, but have so much more to unload. As petite, unable to unload designer clothing but still working at it. I truly appreciate your advise and I'm striving to become a minimalist too.

Always wonderful videos Eileen 👏💝 I went to an Audi dealership to hopefully buy a pre owned version of a car I’d saved a long time for. In fact I was prepared to pay cash, but did not say that of course. I drove up in my (well cared for) Toyota RAV4). The SA was totally condescending & definitely didn’t try to sell me that car. Even prior to the application he was asking insulting things such as “Do you have a job?!” 😮 I walked out, told him he would regret his behavior & contacted the general manager. Needless to say I got a killer deal, delivery to my home, free tinting & a roof rack! I love my car & I totally see a difference in how I’m treated for driving it. I find it sad that we are such a shallow society😢 I can’t deny that some of my luxury purchases have been for status signaling, however; I’m very honest with myself over WHY I want certain items & generally enjoy the more low key pieces because I don’t like flashy & big logos. My Chanel bag is a reissue. My Rolex is a vintage with no diamonds, my Cartier Trinity necklace is the tiny heart, no diamonds. Generally only the people truly in the know will realize I’m wearing designer. I just don’t like the “trying too hard” type of style. It makes us appear insecure & shallow.

I love your topic here! People at young age love to impress but when you get matured we learned so many things and we get smarter in choosing our decision. Theres nothing wrong to buy luxury item if you really afford it to feel good and to impress yourself but for me its smarter to buy affordable item that will never put you in debt. Its fine to have 1 to 2 pcs of branded item but for me i dont care to buy affordable one so i can use some of my money in other important things. I dont even like people buying expensive things to impress id rather want to be in the company of those people who are very simple and casual .

Yes, Practicality should rule over luxury. A diamond 💎 is a diamond whether it comes from Tiffany or your local jewelry house. We are talking about quality and not brands or brand's prestige. True luxury is where you can pick up anything without looking at the price tag and without feeling afraid. And also able to share some extra of your wealth with the less fortunate is a plus.

I work in the Dermatology Department and often wear my 2 scrubs and 2 tshirts the whole year. My things look tatered from everyday use. There are times when a colleague with the lowest salary grade among us would comment on my things. She just purchased her iphone 13 pro max on loan for 1300$. She doesn't understand that I am the breadwinner in my family so personal things are not my priority. I support my retired parents, I pay my bills which is 20% of my pay and I pay insurance. What I spend my money on is trainings and certifications so I can work abroad for 10x my pay or atleast get a promotion. I have no one I can lean on when money is short. No one. I felt belittled for my android phone and overused clothes. I just don't want to spend money on things I can't afford. And if ever there's extra, it goes to my parents. They need it the most and because I love them.

Just look presentable and decent, no need to impress other people with flashy colors and big logos that look so tacky on. Comb/fix your hair, minimal natural makeup, ironed clothes or neatly folded clothes, clean shoes, etc… In other words, don’t be a sloth either. Once again, you nailed it! Buying quality is an investment and I've tended to buy more for myself or what I like rather than what I think will impress others. I don't care what everybody else is wearing or if I'm trendy or not (not at my age anyway). I do love beautiful, high-quality clothes and accessories, but I don't need massive amounts of stuff or to dress head-to-toe in logos. That screams fashion victim! I am also reminded of the lyrics to a Billy Joel song from way back that went like this: "They were all impressed with your Halston dress, And the people that you knew at Elaine's, And the story of your latest success Kept 'em so entertained, Oh, but now you just don't remember All the things you said, And you're not sure you want to know, I'll give you one hint, honey You sure did put on a show." Not my style.

Branding is an “idea”. The companies worked hard to advertise the products a certain way to be able to sell. I have absolutely the same belief now to everything you said in your video but sometimes…. sometimes… there is still a luxury item that makes me really happy, not momentarily. I admire your honesty. I have been working on myself because I realised there were a lot of times I bought luxury items, not to impress but to make those whom I know will be affected by being annoyed or jealous because I don’t like them. 😅

While I love luxury items, fashion and shopping, I have outgrown the phase of buying luxury items to impress. I've become a more conscious and sustainable shopper - I now buy only what I can use with a lot of outfits that I already have, one that I know I will use for years or even decades (and I can pass on to my daughters), and even choose to shop second-hand and vintage (I've been a vintage lover since age 9!). My interest in shopping haul and unboxing vlogs have shifted to shopping your own closet and styling videos of stuff that you already have. I really appreciate you sharing your insights and creating contents like this!

I don’t buy luxury, honestly I’m not that careful with my bags so I prefer to stick to Contemporary great quality but don’t give me anxiety to baby them. Saying so. There is nothing wrong on giving yourself a luxury once In a while, just don’t fall into the Fomo thing. Look at it, go home and think if you still want it. It’s crazy since it’s not luxury but I muled on my RayBan wayferer for probably three years and when I finally got them I was really happy about them. I love sunglasses my second favorite accessory after handbags but funny I don’t use them that often. that’s it took me three years to get them. Now waiting for them that long make appreciate them more. So try to always think before buying if you really want that item and there Is nothing wrong if your answer at the end is yes

Totally agree. Too many people are doing too much to impress others versus making themselves happy. I like certain luxury items in the same way as you. I like that they are well made and beautiful and have certain design elements that fit my aesthetic. That's why certain Tiffany items are worth it but if you are buying plain diamonds, go local. You will get more bang for your buck. Those Idyll diamonds are the same diamonds as in a Tiffany ring, without the hype markup. I notice that so many of those unboxing channels never show the bag again. My guess is the item goes back or on to someone else.

Hi Eileen, Yes i do agree that carry designer stuff does shows that one wants to show off a bit and yes in certain industries it does have some peer pressure to look good i. e lawyer, bankers, entrepreneur. Ok for me getting designer does have some elements to it but i really hope the item that i bought will last as well thus i switch to designer brand. I had no brands handbag, contemporary prior to all these luxury and it does have wear and tear. I am not saying designer does not have wear and tear but to the least perhaps i can salvage it, like Hermes they do help to salvage the handbag for a very long time. Not so much for Chanel or Louis Vuitton. Therefore i do hope to get a Hermes Kelly or Berkin one day. As for the handbag you would like to replace, the tote which is not LV looks more chic to me. So i do not just go for branded. What i am trying to say is i would buy those who looks appealing to me. I am not into cars too. So a car to me is from A to B as long as it does not break down. For Diamond, it is not necessarily from Tiffany & Co in my opinion. I go for designer for those design i cant get else where i.e JUC. Cartier. Even the Love bracelet, many common jewelry does have that design and consist more gold. This is not dupe and price cheaper. That is my thought. Thanks for sharing.

I live in a high crime city where purse snatching is more common than I like. I've given up purses in favour of not being noticed. It's annoying to be asked for money you don't actually have. I'd rather have 1000 in a 10 dollar purse or even better a decent hidden pocket. I like specific designer clothes and have friends that do too but I know I'm not fooling anyone. I'm still the same person with the same lifestyle just with an excessively pricey item. I've had cheap purses that function just the same as the bougie one. They both function the same. They hold my stuff.

Luxury is designed to keep people poorer than they need to be. In Scandinavia where I'm from, many rich people are quite humble. They hide their wealth quite well and are not driving fancy cars etc. Cars drop in value, they don't increase like real estate. It's important to be smart with money and build safety for hard times. Flashing wealth attracts the wrong types of women, and friends in general. Wealth provide comfort, but not genuine happiness.
