Good points for discussion bro. I don’t regret my 68 RFE for a second. I deleted and tuned in my truck at around 7000 miles if I recall correctly, like an idiot I know! However it’s closing in on 90 K and I have had no issues at all with it. And my only regret is going for the cushy ride of the 2500 as opposed to just getting a 3500.

I traded my 2020 Ram 68RFE and got into a F350 6.7, I can tell you I already miss my Ram. My Platinum has a few rattles already, and the interior isn’t a huge step up from the Lariat. But I really miss the sound of the Cummins and the low end torque under 1500 rpm the Ram had over my Ford. I will say the Ford is amazingly fast and the Cab is way more spacious.

I investigated this very issue before custom ordering my Ram 3500, which also included talking with a transmission specialist church buddy of mine, that advised the Aisin is expensive to maintain and repair. I also investigated the 68RFE and discovered that most of the time, the reason these things fail is because of overloading due to HO tunings and/or much larger tires w/o changing the differentials, or towing too close to (or over) the 20,000lb limit; that if these things are avoided and the tranny is serviced regularly, it is an otherwise descent machine. I then looked up the service intervals and associated costs and compared to how much towing I actually do (and at what weight) and forecasted how expensive it will be to upkeep in the future (as I am nearing retirement), arriving at the reason I bought the standard output 6.7l with the 68RFE.

You are spot on regarding the Trans. I have the H/O Aisin set up and when driving it empty it's a tad rough. BUT as soon as I put my 5th wheel on it the thing drives so much smoother. Hands down it was built to work and tow. I have never had a better pulling truck! I even like my 2021 better than my old 95 12 valve cummins. Keep in mind I couldn't afford to turn up the power just had very mild upgrades cuzz that trans was weak sauce.

I have a 3500 HO with the Aisis. It shifts very smooth empty and loaded. I soft pedal the throttle in diesel trucks. I change the transmission fluid myself and send the oil off to get analyzed. Using Amsoil we found out its good for 65k miles. Geno's Garage has filters for $66 and gaskets for $24 just add your favorite fluid... I modified the cross member to make it easier to change the filter, it takes less than an hour to change..

Wonder how the mileage compares to a 6.7 with the 68rfe. I'm in a 2017 2500 with over 530000 miles hauling a 36' flatbed and most time average around 12mpg loaded and 14 mpg empty. If I have a high load and a headwind I've seen it get 8mpg trying to get across I-90 in Wyoming and I was crying the whole time. For the record I'm on my 3rd 6RFE so next time I'm looking really hard at the HO/Aison setup.

Two things people don’t understand about the Ram Cummins. 68RFE is for daily driver or occasional light tow of RV couple times a year. HO Cummins with Aisin is for constantly towing and extreme use. That said I have a built 68rfe and fairly aggressive tuning and I abuse the crap out of my truck daily and when I do tow I tow hard and fast. Redhorse Motorsport built 68rfe for the win!

I watched your original video on the Aisin after I ordered my '22 3500 HO DRW and was worried that I would hate it as well coming from an '18 2500 but that didn't happen. I never experience the really hard shifts that yourself and many others have commented on. Sure, it's a very different driving experience, especially in the lower gears, but I don't even notice it anymore. And, as you say, under load it really performs well, especially with the .410 gears. Perhaps it is true as another commenter suggested that the retuned it for recent models; either way, I'm a happy customer.

Aisin is really a great transmission, some people would argue that it's better than an Allison which is a matter of opinion, they're both good transmissions. The problem with the 68RFE is people put programmable tuners on their truck and it raises the line pressure so high that it damages the van body and bad things start to happen then they blame the transmission. I've seen people turn up Duramax's and they break the lugs off the converter, what do you expect you go adding power, especially large amounts and your going to find the next weakest link. I have a 68RFE in my 2011 3500 and no complaints.

I had a 2004 SRW 3500 with the 48RE and it went 225k before needing a trans rebuild. I occasionally towed a 12k fifth wheel and daily drove it.
@jeffking6672
@jeffking6672 Жыл бұрын
I primarily only use my 2015 Ram 3500 for trips towing my fifth wheel, often with a flatbed trailer with a side by side behind the fifth wheel. Weight between 15,500 to 18,000lbs. The engine/Aisin combo is the beast for the job. Looking at the trailer trip data, which only records with the trailer connected I've had the trailer back there for 36 percent of the time I've driven the truck, and I can't tell how much with just the flatbed with the side by side since it doesn't get logged. I change the Aisin fluid myself at the 30k interval but take it in for the filter change interval because it's so messy dropping the pan. You also have to change the rear differential fluid more often if you want to avoid trouble when towing heavy. Personally I see no reason for a diesel truck unless you're putting it to work since the cost of ownership definately goes up with the heavy duty stuff.

Does your Aisin have a drain plug? And does your truck have a trans dipstick? If so it’s super easy to change the fluid yourself without going to the dealer and I wouldn’t bother with the filter until 60k. If it doesn’t have a drain plug then absolutely change the filter while the trans pan is off. Ford across the board has 150k trans intervals. My 17 Mustang GT manual has a 150k interval. It’s stupid but they do that because low maintenance sells sadly. Tow piglet has problems because he buys or leases his trucks with the intent of not servicing. No doubt the 10 speed probably needs more frequent fluid changes if you actually do HD truck stuff but if it’s serviced it should have no issue living a long life.

I think the point is not coming out here soon enough in your video. If you buy the HD RAM to tow, the AISIN is your solution. If you buy a HD RAM as daily driver with occasional driving, the Chrysler box will get it done. As an engineer, I will take JB's bet expressed below and happily fill my thirsty Cummins fuel tank with the proceeds! Used predominantly for towing and identical heavy trailers and traversing environment, say Escapee caravaners, following the maintenance schedules, the Chrysler box will need a rebuild before the AISIN. You cannot downplay the substantial design-for-function differences. Now the two HD transmissions being trialed for the future HD RAMs get me excited because of both builder and more gears!

It depends on the user, I think most people put more stress based on the climate they live in, the roads they drive on, and their own personal driving habits. Nice video. There’s no doubt the Aisin is the better transmission of the two but I would guess part of the difference in seat of the pants drivability is it’s probably not early as efficient as the 68RFE. What I mean is it’s probably robbing more power from the motor. Anyways, I have said in the past I feel the HO options for all brands are kinda gimmicky and while it’s true they make more power, it’s typically a very narrow band in the rpm range that they make that power over the standard output engine. I think the same thing will happen with the Fords when they go with the HO Powerstroke.

You are correct, the Aisin/Cummins combo has so much tq management it’s not even funny but I have to disagree, the HO Cummins doesn’t just give you more power, it also gives you a transmission geared towards towing heavy often. I had a 68rfe truck and I used it to tow my excavator skid steer tractor etc, it towed nice. I just bought a Asian and would never go back as long as I’m towing. Feels like nothings behind me. It’s insane!
