Another really good review. Your “opinion” about the Aisin transmission makes sense. I have the 68RFE and tow a 25ft boat cabin cruiser on the weekends during the summer and it pulls fine out of the hole and at highway speed. Sounds like the Aisin would be for hauling construction equipment as opposed to recreational hauling

Thanks bro, the Aisin is just rough and not ideal for unloaded use primarily. It’s not terrible but it’s definitely not something I would choose to drive everyday unloaded 👍🏾

This was extremely helpful. I never took into account the maintenance or non towing differences between the two. For some reason, I know I should have but just was more concerned about the working numbers and experience than non. Taking into account I would presume the smoother ride of the rear coils vs the leafs of 2500 vs 3500 of the different models I am considering, this really helped in my decision making process! Big thumbs up 👍👍👍

My farrier has a Chev 2500 diesel pickup with a heavy farrier body on it. His Allison has transmission 485,000 miles on it. Has followed the maintenance schedule religiously and nothing else. Still going strong. Amazing transmission. BTW he had to rebuild the engine at 425,000 miles at a cost of 12,000 dollars. Insanely great service life on the engine too.

Some of the same people saying the 68RFE can’t stand up are the same people that Hot Rod their trucks and complaining their truck is a POS. IMO when you abuse your truck it will not last. as i am researching and finding different information videos for mainly dodge trucks with the cummins, you answered some questions i have. i took out 2 trucks last weekend, one being 4x2 (2018, SO) other 4x4 (3500 2015, SO long bed) and all i could think didn't have the same feeling as when bought new 2006 2500 4x4 (HO 5.9 24 valve) feeling like had lots more power. of course maint cost i have been thinking of and heard the 6.7's don't get as good as the 5.9's did. i won't be towing all that much, so need make a 2k mile trip each way with 24' with 3'Vnose enclosed trailer and when loaded expect it to be 12k or bit more in weight and seen some mods that can be done with the SO to be as good as the HO and improve mileage some. now is matter of being able to afford the truck.

I like you're comparison. Good job. I have a 2014 RAM 2500 Cummins and love my truck. I pull a 16,000 lb 5th wheel trailer and this truck is a beast especially with a heavy load. It's a true work horse. It's creeping up on 200,000 miles and uses no engine oil. I do drain and refill the transmission fluid every 10K miles between filter changes to keep fresh transmission fluid. I've had no issues on this 68RFE transmission.

@@JB_WhoWork thanks for getting back to me in good response. I worked in a Dodge Dealership as Master tech for 28 years and seen what people don't do in regards to normal maintenance. Very expensive repairs. ATF+4 isn't cheap these days but cheaper than having to replace a transmission. My truck is all stock no mods. In my opinion I think that's good and feel that it isn't needed, have plenty of power.

Nice! I like the driving comparison. There’s another thing called duty cycle. There is probably zero RVers that are towing less than 16,000 lbs that “need” a HO. You would save serious money, fuel mileage and maintenance costs will be be in your favor with the SO. I believe the HO is starting to separate itsself out as a commercial truck.

Great video! I am in position to purchase a new vehicle. I want a RAM 2500, but a lot of the techs at my local dealer are telling me to buy the 6.4L HEMI over the Cummins. I would only tow on occasion (6x12 trailer with two motorcycles). My dealer claims that the Cummins isn't built for daily driving and my maintenance expense would be to high. Spot on! Coming from a 2018 Tradesman to a 2024 Laramie HO, that was the first thing I noticed. Way more lag on the Aisin ,and I'm wondering if it's the Transmission OR (food for thought) is it because the HO has a lower compression ratio to handle that 420HP and bigger boost that is causing that lag. Great Video!

I had been looking since the summer for the right Ram truck. I’ve owned and driven many for work and really liked them. After getting to drive a 3/4 ton Cummings and an HO across the Liberty Road bridge ( in really rough shape) and around here I stopped down at Preston Ford and asked if I could try a F250 they just got in. My wife and I both agreed the ride was better, it felt more solid and I liked the seats and interior just as good, plus it didn’t have those dang stupid mirrors. I find this helpful. I’m in the market for a Cummins in the next year or so and between a 68RFE and AISIN is where I’m at at the moment. I’m coming from 6 years just daily driving a 6.4 with the 66RFE. Flat lands it’s okay but feels completely gutless driving with load in the bed and up and downhill a reason I want a diesel to keep a long time as well. My question for you is on a long term, having no experience to diesels myself, will the Aisin AS69RC be a better transmission aside from the obvious bragging rights?

JB I took my truck to the dealer and talked to them about a transmission service and honestly they told me if I’m not having trouble DONT do it and that was at 86,000 miles. I was struggling between 2500 and 3500 and along with the 3500, standard vs HO. I went with a 2500 since I’m towing relatively light (10k as of today) and likely won’t go much higher than 14-15k in the future. Since this is my daily driver I went for more comfort unloaded. Crossing my finger that I don’t regret the choice, my main complaint for RAM is the relatively low payload on their 3/4 tons.

@@oldnumber6 I really like the 3500 Limited. It tows my 16,000 lb 5th wheel toy hauler like a dream. It does squat just a bit more than I’d like, but not enough to be any concern, and the towing power is way more than ample. The truck is very comfortable empty or towing, and just does everything with ease and no drama. The exhaust brake is incredible and will handle the trailer down long steep grades with hardly a touch of the brakes. Overall the truck is fantastic! The Aisan transmission is a bit of a dinosaur compared to some of the new offerings from Ford and GM, but I didn’t buy the truck to race, and I have a hard time believing the new transmissions will have the longevity under heavy use that the Aisan has proven! I have about 20,000 miles on it now with probably 80% of those miles towing and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else on the market.

@@razorsedgeadventures6599 I really appreciate your review. We are also towing a toy hauler that maxes out at about 15K and I know that the high output and heavy duty trans is overkill, but the truck will also be used for business. Ford and GM went together and designed the transmissions in the F150 and 1500 BUT NOT THE HD TRUCKS that is a Totally different transmission. Also Allison isn’t going to allow their name to be on the hood of a truck if they didn’t think it is a good transmission. Even tho Allison isn’t making the transmission in house they still looked over the specs and gave it they’re approval. Same way an engineer won’t put his stamp of approval on plans for a Big project if he doesn’t think the structure will hold up to wind .

@@arlynmartin91 Exactly!! I wish people would do their research on stuff before talking about it. there's even a video on here of the engineer saying when introducing the "Allison" 10 speed that {GM and Allison were working back and forth between each other for a few years on this 10 speed developing it}. And like you said there's no way Allison would've let GM use their name on the sides of their trucks if they hadn't had a big part of this co-development for that's a big part of their reputation on the line. All I know is I own a 2021 Chevy High Country dually and that 10 speed has been absolutely flawless they definitely did their homework and programming right. Before going with the Chevy I did go test drive a 2020 Ram 3500 dually Cummins HO/Aisin and even though the Aisin has proven to hold up to the Cummins it definitely needs to have some more time spent in the programming/tuning department...

Nice breakdown for people interested in a Cummins. My opinion is I think a lot of pencil whipping goes into some of these numbers (tow and power). I think there has to be certain situations before you truly get the advertised power. This is just my opinion but there never seems to be a leap in performance (0-60, 1/4 mile etc) even though you have sometimes big leaps in power. All three brands limit torque in at least 1st gear in 2500s. GM gives you full power in 3500s I reckon but like my truck for example doesn’t even start out in 1st gear unless you are in tow haul mode. And then they limit the torque. I’m pretty sure I don’t get full torque until 3rd gear. As for the 10 speed Allison, it is built in house by GM but GM owned Allison for years and years and they say this transmission is validated by Allison engineers. So I don’t think too much about that. I have read the 6 speed Allison 1000 was also the limiting factor as to why GM didn’t have as good as tow numbers as Ford and Ram. As for Ford, I don’t think the HD transmissions are a joint effort. The light duty 10 speeds in Camaro/Mustang, Silverado 1500/F150 are definitely jointly built with just software differences mainly. And maybe the HD versions are too but they have never said that. Nice video again. These are things a lot of people don’t consider.

Good stuff! One thing I noticed is that Torque management isn’t as noticeably in the Ford/GM trucks mainly because they are V8’s and don’t have as much lag. Someone else mentioned that Ford/GM didn’t co-develop the Ford 10R140 but I also don’t really see where it’s built or stating otherwise but I could be wrong which isn’t a surprise lol! Thanks for sharing Matt 👍🏾

I don’t truly know either about the HD transmissions. Both Ford and GM have been open about co developing the light duty transmissions (also the 9 speed for front drive based platforms) but neither have really mentioned the HD’s. Especially GM because they are adamant that it’s “Allison branded”. I have driven a 2020 Ram with the standard Cummins several times (a friend of mine has one). It seems fine to me. Diesels are just a different type of power to begin with but i didn’t think it felt underpowered or anything like that. Maybe it’s because they don’t have as much torque management. I just think that with the torque management on the HO Cummins you’re getting a lot closer to the standard Cummins 850 or 860 foot pounds of torque in 1st gear and up until a certain speed. I think that’s why the power difference is just not as noticeable without being side by side and/or with a sophisticated timing system (like a race track). The same is true for Ford and GM though so I don’t see it as being a big deal. 860, 910, 1000, 1050 or 1075 I mean none of them are hurting for power and when i started driving the diesels “only” made around 450 or so torque and GM basically didn’t even try to compete and stuck with big block gas engines that made about 430 or so torque as their go to engine in HD trucks.

@@JB_WhoWork shutter as in driveline shutter. Usually happens on trucks that are geared high and with all the torque it caused vibrations that make the whole truck shake when trying to get the load moving. Once in motion it’s gone. More torque, at lower RPM with the HO and Aisin generally would be more economical if it had the same gear ratios as the 68RFE. HO and Aisin less economical on lower gears, but once you get up to 4/5/6 the gearing is the same as the 68RFE. So - pulling power at low RPM - Aisin wins but is less economical. Highway driving or less 'start/stop' the Aisin should be more economical, even if you factor in the additional weight of the Aisin. A good test would be two identical 3500's one with HO and one without, and add the 150 odd pounds into the non HO truck (both trucks weigh about the same now), and do a MPG test without trailer, and then with the trailer. This should be interesting to see which motor and gearbox is more economical MPG wise. There are other factors too, low compression/high compression ratios of the std vs HO, and also the turbo boost pressure of the std vs HO. It gets quite technical, but - a real world test can put that aside. I am also building out my order for my 3500, but I will keep researching and am in no rush. Like your reviews man, keep them coming. Would love to see some off-load videos, and maybe some suspension articulation / flex differences between the spring vs air suspension.

Thanks for your insight! The lower gear ratios in 4/5/6 made sense like you mentioned to be more economical but they were slightly higher on the GM/Ford variant although they drop in the higher gears. I’m not much of an off raider but if I find a spot for articulation I can start showing this 👍🏾

Not sure what's so hard. The HO has a max tow and the standard has a max tow. Go with what you need or, as I like to say, go big or go home. Unless things have changed, you can only get the HO with the AISIN. Doesn't really leave you much to decide honestly other than trip package. I bought used and didn't have much of a choice. I ended up with the standard output but, I would rather have the 68RFE anyway than the Aisin due to tuning capability. But, had I had the option and bought new instead of used, I would have gotten the HO.

Wiped out my entire power system. (Engine, Trans, Converter.) The mechanic showed me the trans shaft that was non-existing at that point. The Aisen I have now in my deleted 14 is strong at this time. I loved my 17 2500 Cummins, expect I didn't like the 68rfe. I hated the way it took forever to lock the tq converter, and likes to unlock when down shifting and such. The aisin spends most of its time with the tq converter locked. A truck isn't putting down good power to the wheels when tq converter is unlocked. Honestly I believe a guy won't truly understand how much better the aisin is until they have spent lots of time towing heavy loads and packing that weight up and down grades through places like idaho, Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado to name a few. I've spent lots of time driving both my 17 2500 and my grandpa's new 2020 with the aisin. Love the aisin trans and the way the tq converter works. Tried a 2021 f350 for about a month, nice truck, fast off the line, but still enjoy the ram better, so I just traded the 21 ford for a 21 ram aisin trans. I was in love just driving around town, can't weight to hook up to our 17000lb toy hauler. Also guys need to keep in mind that stopping these trucks with the weight they tow is also very important, in which the ram with a better exhaust brake and the aisin will be much more efficient at stopping a load. Biggest complaint I had with Ford, is it felt like it didn't want to stop. The exhaust brake on the ford is a joke, pretty much worthless.

So my only problem with your review is that - I don't give a crap about towing capacity. My concern is PAYLOAD CAPACITY. When you haul a heavy truck camper - camper plus people plus cargo and it is north of 5000 pounds - do I need the Aisin or don't I? I currently have an 07 Ford F350 dually with a 4.30 rear end and 4819 pounds payload capacity. I like the higher end payload of 5500+ possibilities with still retaining the Cummins diesel engine. Again, not sure if it makes a difference with transmissions offered by RAM. What do you say? Thanks in advance!

Though I have no need for a 1 ton truck, I like your viewpoint on the 2 transmissions. That said, I feel the service intervals on the 68rfe should be similar to the aisin, honestly. Clean trans fluid makes for a longer lasting transmission. :)

You are one of milion people with common sense about having clean fluid and service intervals.

One thing he forgot to mention is aftermarket. The aftermarket has come light-years in parts. The 68rfe can now be built to hold 800 or more horsepower and tow like an animal. The Aisin will never be able to hold the HP the 68 can now. The 68 is also superior in smooth shifting. If you want to keep stock and pull heavy the Aisin may be the way to go. If you want to mod your truck the 68 is the choice.

FYI there’s is multiple out there building aisin and it costs less to have a built aisin vs 68. Horsepower for same horsepower. No one’s going to take a 68 passed 1000 not an aisin. If they are they’re 48 swapping it.

Why aisin Transmission last longer it's because of more frequent fluid change. 68rfe doesn't last long because of fluid change intervals. Factory atf fluid is only good for 40k miles. Verified via fluid analysis

For a reference. I'm a "GM"guy. Remember that when i tell y'all this. The new 10 speeds are falling apart!!! So much so that GM has STOPPED using theirs. Do NOT buy these trucks. If you get lucky with a GM and it doesn't fall apart on you. Get ready. You WILL take your transmission OUT at 150,000 miles. It's in the maintenance requirements. You will have to replace a belt for the motor that is between the motor and the transmission. This is in the half ton 3.0 diesel by the way. Ford is continuing their use of their 10 speed. Again, I'm a GM guy. I've owned about 7 of them. 2 dodges. 1 Ford. So, there you go guys. Good luck! And, God video

The gear ratios differences between the 68rfe and the Aisin you showed are minimal. There isn't any significant difference in forward gears. The 68rfe actually has a way better reverse gear. The difference you feel in power likely has to do with the high output engine and nothing to do with the transmission.
