Why would someone buy your course if there is so much information available for free?
This is probably the number one question I get from students. And it’s a logical one given how much amazingly helpful information is out there for free with just a single Google search.
It’s an even bigger question when you start to regularly give away a ton of your own great content for free. It’s almost as if your own free stuff is competing with your paid stuff.
But that’s simply not true.
Today I'm breaking down the 3 key reasons why people will happily pay for your premium online course or membership, even with the proliferation of solid free content.

Yeah that part was gold. It's exactly what we do when we write ads, but hadn't thought of it when applied to why people would buy when there's free stuff.

On point #2: it's also a great reminder that it's important not to compete on rock bottom prices and instead become a premium provider in your niche. If your courses are priced at 17$, it's almost the same effect as if they were free. People are not going to value them and take them seriously!

1. Course Offereing Simplify information | When people are overwhelmed with information via a quick google search, it create an opportunity to offer courses (7:20). 2. Barrier to Entry | When people invest money to buy courses they take it more seriously because that want to extract value from the sunk cost associated with paying for the access to your course (12:20). 3. Access & Transformation | You're not selling information, you're selling access to your (business/personal brand) transformation from implementing the information you provide. People are now buying more into courses because they are buying into personalities & the access they'll have (17:00). For me the 2nd & 3rd reason resonated the most with me especially number 3!

Graham I always love your stuff but this one especially nailed it! I just released my first (of what will be many) Online Guitar Course and many have wondered why I would do that when there are SO MANY YT videos of free guitar lessons. One marketer I follow said it best...people will pay for STRUCTURE and that's my niche'. So many random bits of material out there and no way to connect the dots...until now :). Thanks as always man!

Yeah, for real. It's easier and quicker to learn to play an instrument working directly with someone who has a great method for teaching, and not everyone teaching music does. But if you find someone in that category it will shave a long time off the process and make it really work. It might not even really work just seeing random videos not even in an order where what you learn builds in a way that even goes anywhere. People then feel like the time they did take putting to it is wasted and they don't really have any real skills to even do what they wanted to do in the first place. No one has time to waste.
@chrisdunnettmusic

@OfMindandMagnificence I agree there is no substitute for real time in person lessons however, that is not always an option for everyone. Some also like the leisure of just watching a video when the mood strikes as well as the ability to go back watch them over and over for reference. Nothing tops one on one in person instruction but online in person Lessons are fortunately an option these does as a few very well structured Guitar courses such as what I offer

Thank you Graham. I am very impressed. Listened to you for the first time today and liked the point about having a more holistic ie integrated approach on the subject matter to encourage learning with a system of curated information that creates transformation. I gave postgraduate engineering management masterclasses in a systems context and tried to apply your three points (without having had a designation for them) and although "in class" it was quite successful. For a University as good as it gets. For the last two years I have converted my "conventional classes" into video courses and picked up good tips for improving the learning experience of future students. Thanks again. Thanks to your videos 👍As an Instructional Designer I’ve been creating the inside of the courses for other companies for years. Now it’s time for me to create and package my own content. Thank you for this. I am a psychologist and the problem in the industry is everyone is selling similar services and clients have a hard time distinguishing across price ranges and methodologies used. I have been active in academia and battled with management to introduce more experiential types of learning to bring exactly what you mention in this video with the concept of promoting transformation. I have a bunch of ideas to sell online and am looking in the basics of how to do this. I totally agree and resonate with the first item on the list which is information overwhelm. I have a system I have created for my courses to curate available information and make it accessible to people for practical use. In a way it will be breaking down abstract concepts into ABCs and helping others grow in a building block format. Cross fingers this works for me on this new journey I am attempting to walk on. I now just have to learn how to do this according to guidelines and i'll be set to go ;)

I especially love that he talks at a slower pace than some of these 20 something KZfaqrs, who just want to talk fast… I can’t comprehend when people are just talking too fast And overtime. This is why social media gets very overwhelming to people and can also become an addiction to others, I love when people are talking at a slower pace where you feel like you’re having a real conversation with someone and that is why I love watching and listening to Graham!

What stands out the most for my online guitar lesson business is... #1... PEOPLE ARE OVERWHELMED WITH CONTENT. I'm so glad that you made this video because this so applies to music instruction online. I see this with my students as well. Sell the transformation. It's important to connect with the 'symptoms' of your ideal clients pain and problems. How does it feel to have this problem? How does it affect their lives? How does it make them feel? I've been spending too much time projecting what I think their pains are vs actually working out how it affects their lives day to day. Awesome video Graham!

Hii!👋 This is my first time meeting/ knowing of you ( can't escape the algorithm! 😅) For me- #2- I think both creatively and logically, but because I have the DP/DR phenomenon, if the information is all over the place, I get overwhelmed and dissociate, so I definitely love the linear, logical, step-by-step to a tangible "line"( sort of a "before and after"). So #1 is part of that for sure, but for me as the "coach", I need to show up as my truest authentic self💯 , so thank you for this compilation!🙌

Thank you Graham. Present curated information n make it systematic step by step. Something you won’t get in free content. Now I’m super clear as to why I struggle to make educational content on KZfaq. There are too many missing steps in short educational videos even though it might be 20 mins long. Too long for KZfaq perhaps but too short for education. Now I know for sure selling courses online should be more of my focus 😊 then I can take my time to present the way of learning as well it should be learned

So just wanted to thank you for creating a video that actually helps and gives a direction. I have found many but have struggled to work out what to do next. I have spent 10 months writing, scripting, filming my online course no.1 My name is James Nader and on KZfaq with that name not this one. I have been a photographer at a high level for 20 years and decided in lockdown UK to turn my services into products. It’s taken a while but almost fallen at this last hurdle by feeling no one would want to know or engage with all of the free content. You have with this video given me the wind for my sails and can now see the wood for the trees. I appreciate your candid and open content and wish you well. Hey Graham, everything is on point, and as many successful online entrepreneurs say: "You don't sell information, you sell results and transform your clients into the better." I thought a lot about what kind of business model do fit me better in the start, and finally came to the result, that I don't want to waste my time doing a course now, but instead offer personal coaching through private coaching and a membership coaching. If you have no following, or the numbers are too low, there is no point to invest months creating a course and seeing no results. One of my colleges just had this experience with his course - sold a couple copies, and he quit. He said: "It's not worth it!" It's not only a money risk but more of a time-risk. I think everyone should be realistic first. Wishing that we sell hundreds or even thousands of courses in the first month with a little following is not realistic. Too many complain that money is the issue, or whatever the reason will be. So I think that a membership model that focuses on delivering transformation is far more realistic in terms of results for starting a business and results for clients is the way to go in the beginning. I think as well, that even if you have the best sales copy on the market for your niche, you still will not sell courses without a solid following, as we have 2020. Everyone is selling courses everywhere with the same sales copy and the same "promises". The first question that people often ask is: "What is different in your course than I have seen in course XY?" People compare because the market is saturated that's why they ask. In 2010, no one would ask. And my personal opinion is that courses deliver not nearly the same results, as membership coaching programs. The proof is what you have mentioned before with personal coaching and the proof is the "cone of learning" model from 1969. It's another reason why I didn't want to start with a course, even if it's the best one out there. By the way, free content is not valuable for people, that's true. I see it on my channel, and I see it on my email list. People don't care. They don't even open the email with two free PDFs I send them out. It's insane how the mindset of customers work. You give a free e-book full of valuable content, almost no one cares. You sell something that comes not even close to the value of that free e-book, people buy. Haha. So yes, money is extremely important at some point! People will value your stuff more, and they will have more results! True!

Speaking of being overwhelmed… My biggest distraction is watching a KZfaq video to try to get instructions on how to do some thing and I end up watching 30 minutes worth a Videos just to still not get the answer. Video is very distracting so when I find Contin creators like you that actually have a podcast as an option for me to listen to that same information it’s a huge win-win for me and everybody. Because part of my job part time is to be driving and if I could be listening to you while I’m driving in between passengers, I can still be learning . Also, if it’s a podcast, I’m less likely to get distracted because I know there’s not a video that I could look at, even if I could just listen to the videos . So little by little, I’ve been finding my KZfaqrs on Apple podcasts, and slowly switching over to listening to them .

All 3 work together well. Totally agree it needs to be transformational, paid for and more access. Its like a 3 legged stool. It will fall if one leg is broken. Thanks!

Love this Graham! This is the video I needed. I've been following both of your brands for a while (found you through Ramit actually), all great stuff! I've been trying to figure out what market/niche I have expertise in that I can enter when most all have free content available on the Internet so this is helpful. I do have a question. When your niche is mostly free content creators, how you do handle entering the market with paid products without being considered a "sell out"? Are you friendly with the other home recording/mixing entrepreneurs or do you view each other as "competitors"?

Hey Adam - great question. I don't like the word competitors. I try to make friends with everyone in my space if I can. And there is no such thing as a sell out if you're simply offering paid premium material. They should be doing the same thing if they are smart!
