Are you giving your production music tracks the best shot at success? It's easy to get lost in trendy sounds and catchy hooks, but who really cares about all that if your music does not inspire and solve problems for editors, directors and filmmakers. This week we focus how to improve the beginning, middle and end of our tracks.

More of this please. As of late, a lot of videos/channels I've come across that talk about licensing feel a bit more of a marketing ploy or too generic tbh. However, your videos/series about this topic is invaluable. You have that honesty that really helps give us a glimpse to how things actually work. Your video last year about how you earn from sync plus performance royalties is a good example. You're sharing lessons based on actual experience (the ups and downs of it all). It makes it more credible imho. From my experience, there aren't much channels covering music licensing that much and I believe that yours will grow to be a gold mine of great resources for people like me who want to learn and venture into this specific career in music. Thanks for the videos!

John, thank you. I'm 42 and have been playing/recoding since my teens. I'm currently starting the journey of getting my music into libraries. Trying to get the best quality working with the limited equipment I have currently. Finding your channel has been a huge saving grace for me. I appreciate all the time and work you put in here. For guys like me, you are a game changer. Again, thank you

As someone who used to run a film production company and licensed dozens of tracks, this info is totally on point. I would also add that just like KZfaq, the track artwork and title is also massively influential. Make both match the vibe of the track and the kind of video you imagine it being used with. Also helps to have a collection of tracks that all sound cohesive but with varying moods which can be used together over longer form content.

This is great advice, I'm comfortable scoring but I've really struggled with production music. I definitely need to be more methodical. One thing I have found is there are so many people making music because of the availability of software it's a really flooded market. It's hard to get production music companies to even listen to what you've made.

Thanks, Dave. I wrote for years before I started thinking about the end user. It’s so easy to get lost in the process, make something cool, only to realize it’s not very useful in the real world.

Before the video I was a subscriber. Now I am a happy subscriber. Any more videos on this topic are highly appreciated. You’re really giving great value to the learning crowd and insights are so helpful. Also the length and speed of your videos is just perfect + your production quality is outstanding. Thank you Jon!

I’m so glad I found your page. I make music for tv and film and have a decent amount of credits so far, but now I want to grow and make this more a part of my main income stream. Your video explained some key points in better detail. I just subscribed and will be watching more.

As a video editor you are 💯 correct sir. When I pick out music I'm usually picking music out for a committee. So the first 6 seconds are crucial. Great channel!

What I’d like to see (and I haven’t found it yet), is musicians like yourself, interviewing directors, editors, marketers etc to understand their thoughts and processes when it comes to choosing stock music. It would be incredibly valuable to both musicians and filmmakers alike.

Excellent video, thanks Jon! I’m curious which services you use. I’ve been on audiosparx for about ten years with a modest amount of success. I’d love to expand. Also congrats on the release of the Feathered Flute! It’s a great instrument!

Hi Jon, I appreciate your content. I’m moving from theatrical composing and sound design into sync licensing. Do you have any info or recommendations on copyright for film libraries. Do I copyright each track individually? Or collections? Not really sure and can’t seem to find anything clear. Thanks again for what you do.

Do you advise making 15-, 30- and/or 30-second edits of the songs for stock along with the basic version? When I used stock music, I usually needed music that fit into those times for use in commercials. I often would just edit the song to include the parts and pieces I liked within the longer track, but if I was on a time or budget constraint, I would just look for edited versions that fit that particular project.

How do you use that guitar with P-90s -- which are noisy -- on production tracks where the audio needs to be pristine? Are we talking Izotope Rx here?
@JonMeyer
@JonMeyer Жыл бұрын
I cut any excessive noise, but it’s not always a problem. Production music tracks don’t always need to be pristine.
