The real work of composing music for media takes place long before the first note is recorded. I've written close to 1000 production music tracks. Along the way I've developed a 5 step formula that fills my brain full of ideas to fight off the dreaded writers block.

I can write the music, that's not the issue. I have trouble with mixing. Would be great if you done livestreams mixing one of your tracks for commercials or made a part series about it.

@@JonMeyer Awesome, Jon! I especially get frustrated with piano placements in my mixes. In stereo, the piano often take up most of the midrange, so I scratch my head wondering if I should change the input to mono... It would be great to get your advice on it.

I cant believe there are so few tracks in a piece that feels so full...I usually get stuck adding 20 more tracks than I need to. Very inspiring...

Great advice. It’s very helpful to hear you discuss the nuts and bolts of music production. It can be so difficult to talk about art and why something is successful, especially when we as artists have our own tastes and interpretations of what we find to be “good” or “effective.” These tips you are giving are fundamental to the process, and help to build a foundation where the artist can then find expression on top of those pillars.

Yes, there is such a problem the first 3000 tracks and the first 200 projects (one of my shows is 15 years old and has about 3000 episodes in it) It is always hard to find ways out for yourself and not get hung up on the same solutions. It's only people like you that help inspire and keep yourself in check. My respect to you Jon for everything.

Good stuff Jon! When I write production lib music, it also helps to listen to other people's approach to the same briefing. While I don't do sound-alikes, it does help me to not go down a dead end street. Nice videos on your channel, for sure :)

Hey Jon, I super enjoy your content, and even more so the “vibe” of your channel. It just feels really good. I have a more of a KZfaq production question if you’re willing to answer it. If not, no worries. It’s simply, “How do you get your V/O audio into your videos? Is there a live mic into your daw while you’re filming and then bring the DAW audio into your video timeline? Or are you recording your V/O audio in camera separately?” I’m just having problems figuring this out. I know it’s a bit off topic, but I’m curious. Thanks either way.
@JonMeyer
@JonMeyer Жыл бұрын
I make this difficult. The mic goes straight into my camera. After I make all of my edits I go through and cut out the sections from my mic channel that fight with the computer audio I capture using screen flow. I'm much faster than I was at the beginning, so not a huge time suck.
