The reason platypuses glow under UV light is due to the presence of fluorescent molecules in their skin and fur known as Flavins. Their purpose is still unknown, but its believed to play a role in communication or mate selection. It could also be completely vestigal, and no longer play a role like it did in the past. Platypuses are millions of years old, so it’s likely to just be a remnant from it’s ancestors.

Fun Fact : Platypus never use the venom in their rear feet, so it's unknown why they even have it in the first place. Their also one of the only known Mammals to have Poison glands.

Not so much never use as rarely use, but this is a subject very light on research data. There are a few recorded incidents of people being injured by the spurs and were observed to be in very significant pain. it's not known what exactly causes a platypus to use it's spurs as zoologists and caretakers haven't been attacked. This maybe due to familiarity quelling a sense of threat, while incidents in the wild could be a result of being startled, caught accidentally or possibly antagonised, the details given by the 2 or 3 people that had a wild experience can't really be taken as scientific conclusion. Observation during official research suggests that the spurs are sometimes used when males come into conflict over a mate or territory.
