Great video. As a woman, I experience pushback even from family members for just being interested in science, let alone math & data. I just decided after a year that THIS is what I want to do.... switching from Agriculture. I told a family member who does something slightly similar to Data Science... and he literally asked me if I am sure it is what I want to do because it is a lot of numbers. I am excited about switching majors and going for this‼
@KenJee_ds

That is awesome that you have found what you want to do! I would love to hear about your journey transitioning from Agriculture. I will say, I think if you combined data science with your agriculture knowledge, you would have a very unique skill set as well. I usually recommend that people transition by blending skills from multiple fields rather than making a "jump". I hope this helps!

I strongly agree with you about the three rasons in order to not become in a data scientist but I think as you told, depends on your position or your goal. For instance, I think in the resarch area you have less collaboration because most time you are the only one that know your work or your novel investigation so it's sometimes hard to display this to others. I think there are many resources for learning data science hence the main problem to become in data scientist is the patience and self-confidence.

I hope you see my comment… I’m tired. I just can’t grasp the logistics of R. Even in college Coding just doesn’t stick in my head. Actuarial science….calculus…financial mathematics… that’s my thing. Apparently, because people are jumping on the Data Science bandwagon they’re subsequently helping increase the demand for physical Mathematicians. The money is nice. You are absolutely correct, it does make one feel burned out. I suggest anyone who has children put them in classes NOW it doesn’t matter if they are 5-10 do it. However there will always be a need for applied Mathematics

Thanks for this video. I am an "analyst" trying to decide if I want to become a data scientist but it seems like some of the things I dislike about my role may be the position and not the company. I'm the only analyst with nobody to ask questions, less prof development opportunities, and nobody knows what I do :( The autonomy/expert thing kills me! I'd much rather have a team and people who understand benefit of my work. Have you experienced being in your own little corner or being way ahead of your companies' resources?
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! It definitely sounds like the position rather than the work per se. There are three main things that contribute to workplace enjoyment 1) Autonomy 2) A clear progression path 3) being able to see the value that your work creates for the company. If you aren't seeing at least 2 of these in your current company, I would talk to your boss about how to change some things. Autonomy in this case doesn't necessarily mean that you're alone in a room all the time, it means that people trust you to execute the work without as much necessary supervision. Team can be really important for the 3rd part of the work satisfaction equation. I don't think the problems that you are facing would be any worse as a data scientist. I think that it would vary by company. I hope this helps!

Also i am not good at finding good insights. They are average. Any tips?

I appreciate your thoughts! Well made video. Also ..What do you think about the future of Data Science, analytics , Machine Learning ? AI is rising and automation will surely hit this field some are even saying Data Scientists will be outdated and automated by 2025-2030... as AI and AutoML like emerging technologies analyse data more efficiently and faster.. I am in no way discouraging anyone its just that these things are being heard often nowadays..Also which UG will be better Economics or Computer science in the long run ! I need your perspective :)
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron! I think the field of data science will branch into two categories. I expect there will be data scientists who act more like consultants - explaining what is happing to business stakeholders. The other branch would be more like machine learning engineers or even software engineers where they are applying the automl and integrating it into the broader system. I still think there will be plenty of opportunities for data science though. Many companies are lagging way behind the current tech, and that leaves a staggered demand for the skills!

@@kingbk1592 I would argue ds is harder to learn that software engineering! A data analyst role is definitely less work but the pay is less. I would say the amount of work you have to do to become a data analyst and a software engineer is about the same but SWE will make about 30% more. Mileage will vary though. I hope this helps!

I don't agree with some of these points, I think if you are the expert of your company then you need to jump into bigger challenges. Nothing worth solving is done by 1 person, you usually work in a team of data scientists, data engineer, machine learning engineers so ask for help when needed (don't over do it obviously) but PLEASE! don't have an ego unless you are Ian Goodfellow and he seems very humble so please don't have an ego.
@KenJee_ds

Hey Sergio - Thanks for watching! I completely agree with you that nothing worth solving gets done with one person; that is why the 3rd point is that you shouldn't get into data science if you're uncomfortable with collaboration. I think that asking for help is a necessity, but it is only after a certain point (I guess I wasn't clear enough about this in my video). Part of growth in this field is pushing yourself and wrestling with problems. If your first inclination is to ask others for help, you won't be able to grow. I also completely agree with your thoughts on ego, and I perhaps had a very specific scenario in my mind (first data scientist or data scientist working on a team with business users & no other ds).

Ken, thank you for your content! I participated in Stanford's 5 week course titled Code in Place and we're now in our final project phase. We spent the past five weeks learning Python. I found your videos through searching "data science for beginners what is data science" in efforts of getting ideas for what kind of final project I want to try 😂The 5 week pace of the course was absolutely too fast for me, but I am so glad I found your channel. After this video in particular, this is definitely a path I want to continue learning about (ie what new information can I read by using methods beyond my usual qualitative analysis approach to things), and you've already helped me create a learning path beyond this course. Thank you! I look forward to more content

Hello I am above 50 years old - I have Master degrees in Business Administration and Statistics . I have also done programming at the initial stage of my career and had been working in the ICT area. Recently I have acquired knowledge of ML with Python. I wonder why I didnt think about being a data scientist earlier ! Anyway I want to be one one now - almost at the fang end of my career.. I have worked in the Middle East and India and in the UK for only 1 year after MBA. I am a very fast learner . Can anyone help me in getting data scientist or analyst or business analyst job anywhere in the world? I know my age maybe a negative point but then I have vast experience of working in different business area.

I would learn almost anything for $120k. I would clean toilets, put stickers on car parts, hold a sign on the side of the road, eat wasabi, whatever. You can buy a full-sized house after only a couple years of savings with that kind of money. Most Americans haven't had that standard of living for 50 years. I only hear rich people say that you shouldn't do x for the money. It would be more convincing to hear that from somebody who quit a data scientist job to go work at Walmart.
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 жыл бұрын
My point is not that money isn't important, it is that there are other careers that you could pursue that offer the same amount of money with a lower learning curve and a smaller chance of "burning out". Take web development for example, this is a great career where you can make $100k a year after doing a 3 month bootcamp (in some cases). I have over 100k in student debt from the masters degrees that I felt I needed to pursue this field. I also worked full time while pursuing these degrees. I personally, know that I wouldn't have been able to go through that rigorous workload if I wasn't fascinated with the field. If I was in it for the money, I would have undoubtedly chosen a different career path. I hope this helps clarify my stance on this, perhaps I wasn't very clear in the video.

I don't think any data science problems are something that can be "solved". I would work on steadily trying to improve how you do in each competition. There is no destination in data science, you basically are always learning and feeling like there are new challenges ahead. If this isn't a feeling you like, than maybe it isn't for you. On the other hand, if you enjoy that process, I think there is a future in the field for you.
