What is interesting is how the weather plays with the shingle lifetime. We bought 25 year shingles and they were going to go the full run, but the decking wood was from 1961 and was buckling lifting some shingles. This was on the north side of the house where the snow sits all day and doesn't melt because the sun hits it only for an hour. The shingles were 23 years old, no underlayment and had another 5 years left in them. I only know people that had problems with the IKO fiasco from the early 2000s. All of them had black roofs. Pretty much anybody with a black roof in my neighborhood is changing the shingles twice as much. The rest of us with light mint and beige shingles seems to last quite a while. Almost everything is 3 tab. Just now we have around 5% with HD shingles. In Canada, where I live, it will get up to 100 degrees and humid (good luck in breathing) and down to -12 (good luck breathing with frozen nostrils). Occasionally we get 50mph winds but average 37mph. Not much hail.

I had an insurance hail damage claim in 2012 (west side of Denver). A local roofer offered to upgrade to 50 year warranty Malarkey SBS hail resistant architectural shingles no charge. I had never heard of Malarkey but then figured out they made good stuff. The roofer did a beautiful job. I also had them reflash the chimney for good measure. Since then we have had some decent hail but it seemed like high winds were taking the toll on neighbors roofs more than hail. Ours was solid as a rock. No lifting or hail damage. We finally moved and it still looked great and passed inspection after 10 years. Plus we got an insurance discount for the type of roof. Next time I need a roof I will find one with a very high wind rating, not just hail resistant. If I need to pay an extra $1000 out of pocket then so be it. It's the difference of having confidence in your home during extreme weather and avoiding catastrophic damage.

I’m located in Hillsborough County, Florida, and we do not have a hail problem here. So, recommendations that focus on hail damage are not applicable in all geographic areas of the U.S. I am in the process of researching shingles and roofing companies for a replacement roof. Presently, based on other research, I am inclined to go with Owen Corning’s Duration Platinum.

Ive been installing shingles for 36 yrs in middle Tennessee. There's lots of variables that go into a roof lasting. One job we installed with owens corning Oakridge 30 lasted 22 yrs. 12 yrs prior he had an addition added and the roofer color matched with a GAF Timberline. When we installed the new roof, the Oakridge shingles looked better than the GAF shingles installed on the addition. Twice as old and in the same environment. I installed the 25 yr elk shingle on my personal home 22 yr ago, which GAF bought out elk that yr. Things change, materials change! The 3 tab Owens corning seemed to last longer too. Im speaking about materials installed 20 to 25 yrs ago. Im gonna install a new roof on my personal home this yr. Im going with Certain teed. Ive installed them all. They seem to be the best for this climate.

I have Owen-Corning Oakridge shingles on my house and they are not a builder grade shingle and there is no way a shingle is going to blow off from my roof. It would take 130 mile an hour winds in a hurricane to do that, and not even sure then. We have had hail storms and the insurance company couldn't find any damage so shingles are pretty tough. Just had another severe hail storm so waiting for adjustor. It could be 50/50 chance if they replace roof after 14 years. Update: I would rather have one of your top picks that resist hail damage. Why get a new roof then it gets damaged right after you install it.

I had a roof put on in the fall using Certainteed Landmark and lots of areas didn't seal well. It was likely due to a bad install, and the roofer assured me that come spring they'd heat up and seal. Those problem areas never really did look right even in spring.

That should be addressed right away. Get another roofer out there to inspect it. Offer to pay the roofer for a full inspection and report. If it's not installed correctly, or the product failed, you want to get it taken care of before any big winds.

I work for a roofing company and I fully back Owen’s Corning shingles. I don’t have any issue with certainteed (besides the new horizons that were overpriced and have horrible issues with spider cracking). Certainteed makes a decent shingle, heavy gauge, nice tar line. But I definitely feel like the roofer in this video has probably had to compete hard against Owens Corning in the past and that’s the reason why he has a hate on for them. The Oakridge shingle still has. A heavy gauge, and I’ve seen 15-20 year old roofs that my company has done that still look nicer than anyone else’s roof in the neighbourhood. The tar line is consistent and thick, and the granular holds on very nicely with this shingle. Owens Corning will warranty this shingle for 50 years through their platinum warranty program (select installers only). The duration shingle includes the mesh strip for 2 reasons: 1. Impact resistance as mentioned in the video, and 2. Tarline adhesion. The reason duration shingles have earned themselves such a solid reputation is because the mesh strip allows the tarline to sink into the body of the shingle, providing incredibly tight and long lasting adhesion. The oft I strongly disagree with in this video is pointing out how thick and durable certainteed shingles are while falsely claiming that OC shingles aren’t. Any roofer that’s had to carry a bundle of duration or Oakridge shingles up a ladder knows they are very thick and heavy, especially compared to shingles like iko and BP. This feels completely disingenuous to me, and as a result I don’t trust this source. For the record, I used duration shingles on my house.
@homesteadroofing
@homesteadroofing 4 ай бұрын
The actual reason I don't like OC is because I have not seen that they stand up to hail at all. Their Storm shingle line is very poor at resisting damage. I have also had to deal with their warranty claim department on a house and it was like dealing with the government. They did not take care of the situation very well. Don't like anything about OC.

I have a question for you. I live in an area that is very common for it to get hail. I’m about to get my roof replaced due to hail damage and my roofer suggested originally to get Certainteed Landmark ClimateFlex. After doing some research I learned about Northgate shingles. Additionally, I’m about to get solar on my roof so I don’t want to have to take them down in the future to replace the roof due to hail damage to the roof if getting the Northgate shingles would hold up significantly better to hail in the long term. Which would you go with? Is there a big difference in price? Is the price difference worth it in your opinion? Thank you.

Not only are the Malarkey line of Shingles SBS, they use a 5 part polymer instead of three, making it flexible for more of the shingle’s life. I recently started using the VISTA AR and because MALARKEY has been set up with an entire line of these shingles for so long, they are much more cost effective then Northgate, as in around $50.00 per sq less, and I only pay $23.00 per sq more then, Durations or Timberline HDZ, so about $600.00 on an average sized roof. The wide wedge shim is awesome for installing. I am going exclusively with Polymer Modified, and I have been so effective that I don’t need the jobs that they don’t want to spend the extra money.

New subscriber. Builder put Atlas Chalet Shingles on our home. 12 years later some hail damage. I did some research...a lot of research. I was pretty much the last homeowner to replace my roof because roofers went through my community like locusts promising me the world. As I said, my roof exhibited some hail damage even though we had no leaks. I settled on a respected roofer and the roof was approved by my insurance company. 42 years with no claims other than a cracked windshield and a tow. The approval was immediate....ya think? Haha. I decided on Landmark Pro Shingles Charcoal, and every upgrade as far as accessories. My neighbors went with OC, and GAF. One had three tabs installed, but I kept my thoughts to myself. From what I gleaned on your fine website, and others, my roof was installed over two days, and I think by the book. It wasn't cheap, but feel we made the right choice. Our roof is beautiful. I live near San Jose, Ca. We need to replace a redwood shingle roof on our 2300sq. ft. + 2 car garage single story home. Asphalt shingles have now become the preferred roof in my neighborhood. I could use some advice about what grade of shingle that would be most practical from a dependability and cost standpoint for our climate. Temps rarely get to freezing or up in the 90s. They mostly range from 40s to 80s. Winds can gust up to 30-40 mph (rare event). We can get a lot of rain in late winter and early spring but rarely a drop the rest of year. Hail is rare but not unheard of. My husband & I are retired and in our 70s & 80s so I expect that this will be our last roof replacement.

I have the same misgivings as far as GAF.. in process of getting a roofer and shingle choice...GAF Seems to have a pretty wild warranty that tops most others out there... in order to get it, it Must be installed by a GAF certified "master elite" installer and a number of Other Gaf components like underlayment, venting ect need to be used to achieve that warranty.. But warranty aside, the physical shingle in hand felt so poorly made, brittle, fragile, that I serious question whether i wanted it on my house... if we Did go with GAF, it would Only be for the warranty as the shingle looked truly awful in construction.

I have found that Sure nail shingles are much easier to repair because you can get them apart. The Oakridge at after several years is nearly impossible to get apart, until the glue ages to 15 years or so. You can grab the Sure Nail strip and pull and zip the shingle right apart. Totally took my faith in it’s holding power away after I did a few repairs. The edges of them are crumbly, and break/roll easily, even when using soft soled shoes, in comparison to higher quality shingles. The difference when leaf blowing off a new roof is HUGE. We used to seal the last nail in the vent, then use a cap, bent it in half, rubbed it together to get grits to cover the sealant. One cap did several nails. With MALARKEY you use several caps, and still have issues covering one nail. It is day and night difference. So much so that I am refusing to install shingles that are not Polymer Modified.

I agree with on the Malarkey Legacy. Your kinda harsh and unfair with OC. The Oakridge sucks but I use OC Duration 80% of the time and if they want class 4 I use the OC FLEX . We don’t get the Storm in Alberta. You can’t beat the sure nail strip on the Duration and FLEX. And they super seal. We never get blow offs.

Texas Heat kills all your favorites. The glues dry up and delaminates your laminate shingle overtime. Certainteedtoblowoff, Tamko, and Atlas are the most wind repairs in this area. Hail is Hail and large hail will require replacement of any manufacture. Class 4 will hold up to smaller hail and will save you money on your premiums here in Texas and hopefully your deductible, not having to replace your roof during smaller hail events. OC oakridge is an entry level laminate shingle and is a great upgrade for someone with a 3-tab roof wanting a laminate shingle with 110 mph wind rating and on a budget. If you can afford a higher wind rating OC Duration is a good quality shingle and GAF HDZ is a close 2nd, both can upgrade to a class 4 Impact resistant. When it comes to shingles in the extreme heat of Texas it comes down to glue performance & granule retention. I agree about Tamko... pure trash. Unfortunately the roofer that installed my roof used Tamko - 15yrs ago and I regret trusting his opinion. Just waiting for a hail storm. Going back with 24g standing seam 4sure.

If you live in a hail area, I don't like metal. Yes, it's tougher than most shingles, but if you get big hail, it will still get dented. Many insurance companies are writing exclusions into their policies so they don't have to cover "cosmetic" damage to metal roofs, but that could leave you with a roof that looks like the moon surface.
