Haven't finished the video yet as of commenting, but I really like the vibe of A Mall Near You! The retro vibe mixed with the well-drawn sprite characters is really cool! it was just oozing with charm for lack of a better term lol, i always love the dead mall vibe, and the dialogue was fun too

The blinking gorilla statue in the first one made me randomly remember this dumb reddit post asking if people would rather be trapped in a mall with a gorilla or 3 deadly snakes. Also any mall with an Auntie Anne's is an alive mall in my book. Addendum 1: Funko pop backrooms is true terror

As a child I coped with being scared of monsters and the dark by somewhat breaking the seal between real and fake. let me explain, I tried to make small talk with the darkness under my bed to try and get on it's good side, and I also just thought to myself that if I'm asleep its "illegal" in the monster world to hurt me. I knew monsters aren't real but i did all those things as a "just in case" kind of thing. It's nice to talk about my childhood it's so nostalgic no matter what it's about

I've always wanted to play a survival horror game with NPCs like the ones in A Mall Near You. Peple who's scattered presence almost makes the game creepier but at the same time you feel safe when you're near them.

Haha I just realized that the pretzel guy from the first game is speaking in a stun sound from a game called Dead By Daylight. In the game Michael Myers can be stunned with a pallet and makes that sound

What I love about these short horror game collections is that it feels like a book club for indie games, as I always make sure to play the games before I watch the video

tbh i kinda rolled my eyes at first with that first game but after watching i'm mad i didn't play it for myself because man it really has a ubique style to it.

The last game was so unique! What a cool concept! The second one tho is too relatable lol, I remember years ago when I would sit up in my bed for hours on end, struggling to turn off the light because I couldn't stop imagining what was beyond the edge of my bed. When every sound and the shifting of the sheets would have me bolting upright to turn on my bedside lamp. The first game came really close to that paranoia I used to experience-- and still do occasionally.

the "monster" in the 3rd game is the sandman, an owl like creature who would take the eyes of children who would not sleep

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but Thoughtform Invasion seems to be at least lightly inspired by an analog horror series called Greylock! One of the entities in that series known as Thoughtforms (or Tulpas) are created out of highly concentrated feelings from the human mind For example, if you fear that there’s someone in your closet long enough, then you may just create a REAL person in your closet I’d highly recommend Greylock, it’s one of my favorite horror series on KZfaq right now and there’s a lot more to it than what I’ve explained here

I've seen another game similar to "Thoughtform Invasion", but I can't remember what it's called. In the game, you similarly hold your eyes closed with the paranoia of something potentially approaching. But the whole point of that other game is the commentary on paranoia-- because opening your eyes is actually the only way you can lose/die. By holding your eyes shut the entire time, ignoring your fear and paranoia, nothing happens. I thought that was the same approach the game in this video was taking, but I'm not so sure after seeing the ending and other people's reviews.

Bro that takes me back - the pokeballs with the button on the side that open, and inside you can fit a Pokemon figure. I don't know what happened to the original ones from (insert year here). I never heard about a recall though. I suppose anything a kid can swallow will have parents up in arms. They've re-released them though and they're much bigger. No interest, but definitely nostalgic.

The vending machine part reminded me of a picture I took at my own mall. A really perfect and eerie photo of a dark and closed store full of tables and chairs. The only light present in the room was one lit vending machine and an exit sign in the far back of the place. I live liminal space malls.
