I remember a sales associate at our small town department store who always looked very chic and elegant with her simple solid color dresses, mid-size heels, a beautiful sparkling brooch, gray hair, and a beautiful red lip!!! She made an impression on me as a small child with her simple elegance. You are right Marie-Anne, lots of money does not guarantee style or sophistication

Intéressant. You grew up in Normandie and live there now. As an American foreign exchange student in 1967, I attended l’ Université de Rouen. I was fortunate enough to live in the Hôtel de Ville, as my French “father” was lieutenant mayor. I recently have been watching your videos and have purchased your books. Thank you for reminding me of what I used to know (when I was thinner). I have started to watch my portions and stop my snacking. Also, I have started to purge my closet. Merci for all you do.

I had a very demanding and elegant French language teacher in high school who wore 5 elegant outfits to school each week. For some reason, all I noticed was how beautiful she looked everyday, never realized she was wearing the same outfits over and over. One day she mentioned in class that she dressed in the “French fashion”. Fifty years later, I now realize that Mademoiselle’s suits wear custom made for her tiny, tiny silhouette. She was not a “pretty” woman, though she was beautiful.

Yes Marie- Anne I agree with you and Christian Dior. Not everything " in Style" suits everyone. I have to wear what I feel good in. It has to be something that feels like me, my style. These clothes I can enjoy for years. Detail is very important. All three of these points are timeless. Thank you

Is there anything that Maison Dior don't do beautifully?? I went to Granville with my husband in October, visited the Dior Museum and spent the weekend in this little harbour town. The exhibition in the Dior Museum was about Grace Kelly and it brought home to me how influential she was, especially on style, fashion and the House of Dior, but also on the image of Monaco. Dior changed the way women dressed, just as Coco Chanel did. If we change how we dress, we change how we think of ourselves, how other people see us and even our lifestyle. It is an expression of who we are and in turn, helps shape who we will become.

Another wonderful way to present French style in a nutshell! My favourite is ‘understanding’. I buy quality items and wear them for many years. I often get my best compliments when wearing my oldest clothes. Now I am proud of my old clothes and am not embarrassed to say that I have had them for years. You have helped me to understand the importance of style and I appreciate that very much.

Bonjour Marie-Anne! Perfect video and perfect advice! Everything you said speaks volumes and follows what I have practiced and learned from my own mother.... Back in the early 90’s I once once a Christian Dior winter wool coat. It was a “circle swing” coat with a Peter Pan collar. I actually was able to wear it throughout my pregnancy while I commuted back and forth in Manhattan for work... It was a beautiful shade of red .. wish I could remember what happened to it.....

I think if you have a limited budget you need to think very carefully what to buy to look amazing, while when you have lots of money there is a risk of buying anything, simply because you can afford it and mistakes don't cost you so dear :) limited budget can mean unlimited creativity :)

I imagine Normandy is beautiful. My mother had a cook/housekeeper from Normandy, who made the best apple cake with an apple-brandy glaze!! Sixty years later, I still miss that cake!

Understanding your own style is the most important thing. I completely agree. If money equated to being well dressed, then all the famous people on the red carpet would be perfectly dressed. Despite their money, many are not.

The type of clothes I really crave are far beyond my budget, but I find wonderful things in resale shops. The trick to shopping resale is to shop in a store that’s in a very affluent area. The rich ladies bring their things there. But you still must be very discerning....some of those rich ladies can buy really horrible things! But every once in a while, one can find a real gem. Mind you, a piece might be a still be a splurge, even at a resale price, but it will be something that can be worn for decades.

I go to resale shops, and I agree that you have to pay attention. It can be tempting to buy a piece from a label you admire, even though it doesn't suit your needs. I bought a Gucci wallet that I never use, because it holds barely more than a credit card without losing its beautiful line.

@ MaryJo DiAngelo Yes... you must be very careful... and remember, items often show up in resale shops because the original buyer realized it was a mistake or impractical. But if you’re dogged and persistent, you can find wonderful things. However, it’s best to take the attitude that you’ll have success far fewer times than you will. And different body types seem to have success in different areas.... for instance, I have a very common shoe size and so have great success there.

Empathy for yourself and others... Intuitively you will know! A Pleasant / stylish look for yourself will fit with maximum benefits into your community. You like the way you look and it gives you confidence. You are in touch with your authentic self and others engage with that well / engage with you meaningfully with dignity. You are an artist!

There were two Jackies. The early Kennedy and just after years. Then she morphed into the jet-setting Onassis years, the Jackie in most of your images. Notice she rarely wore her three strand pearl necklace as Jackie O. She was much more relaxed in her clothing. In her later New York years, she dressed colorfully in the evening, often in very feminine off the shoulder styles. I’ve always admired her more casual looks and impeccable tailoring. But your trench coat with scarf and sunglasses - epitome of chic. Brava!

I love the work of Christian Dior. His designs were so feminine and elegant. I want to see the CD exhibition in Paris someday and I read somewhere that there is a Musee Christian Dior in Granville that was his childhood home. Travel goals. Lovely video, Marie-Anne. I totally agree..never be a fashion sheep following every single trend. I never wanted to wear the black capes that were extremely trendy in the sixties. I refused to wear the ugly huge shoulderpads in the eighties. I still think they were awful! Nowadays i will never wear these trendy heavy black soldier boots with the thick thick soles. They are so totally not elegant. I love beautiful natural fabrics like bio cotton, linen, cashmere, (merino) wool, alpaca, viscose and the simple classic timeless style. I hardly ever do wear synthetic fabrics. I hate acrylic and polyester. Polyester always is going to pill. A lovely open smile is the best "accessory " you can have ;)

Understanding aesthetic, line, drape, form, proportion, fit, color, construction, and restraint, are more important than any price tag. You cannot buy style, only garments.

The nice thing about quality/ classic clothing that fits you well, is that as long as you care for it, you will have it for years and it won't go out of style. I don't buy fast fashion and I don't follow trends for this reason, and I have a beautiful, durable, classic wardrobe to show for it :) I have a handful of designers/clothing companies that I will buy from,... the rest?...I don't waste my money. I feel the same way about shoes, boots, hats and coats.

You chose great quotes to exemplify what I believe are some guiding principles that I believe sum up what I try to do when dressing myself. I agree with your explanation of the third quote and think that that is what he intended to say. I also like to think of the word “understanding” in a broader sense. No matter how and what we wear, if we are not compassionate/understanding people, that lack will foreshadow everything. Dressing from the inside out. 💞

Great video! And I totally agree- people with a lot of money do not necessarily dress better than people who don’t have a lot of money. Anyone who has the money can wear Gucci, Hermès, Chanel- very easy. But someone who can wear very minimal and on low budget and look amazing-that is style. It’s the way they carry themselves in the clothes, their confidence and their essence. Thank you for your great videos!

It’s so true the details in a piece are so key to how wonderful it looks and feels. And yes! I can take consignment, thrifted finds, and pieces from a store like Target and curate an outfit that looks really high end. People are always surprised when I say something I’m wearing is from Target or H&M -it’s all in the layering and textures etc. And on a side note-I don’t necessarily want to promote fast fashion but if that is all you can afford. Great post! Great timeless fashion advice. ❤️

Bonjour Marie-Anne, so good to see you this morning dressed so stylishly in black dress and pearls... I've been wearing navy more than wearing too much black, in december always enjoy my reds, rusts, and lovely earth colours that match my Hazel eyes and fair skin.. I own a few Of Joan Rivers wonderful bee brooches and her classic collection earrings that Ive worn for over ten years and always get compliments... Cannot beat a huge good quality brooch on a coat or jacket. Have a great Weekend paula x

I think a budget sets limits that force creativity into bloom. That helps focus the look. I remember the spring 2009 Christian Dior makeup collection. I was completely unable to afford any of it. But I worked VERY hard at duplicating the colours and textures that I loved. In a sense it was my guideline to my own makeup style. The sheer skin like glow, the soft neutrals. That spring it was all about the nude shades on the eyes, lips and cheek and nails. CD just did it better than anyone else. I kept pictures of the swatches I found on the web. I found more on Pinterest years later. I’m actually glad I couldn’t afford it then because it forced me to become very creative in copying the aesthetic and in the process I began to really understand why I was drawn to it and to find inexpensive equivalents that had that sheer luminous beauty. If I would have bought the look, it would have worked perfectly but I would still be ignorant of WHY. And if I ran out- it would not be available in future. By picking it apart mentally and finding substitutes in my price range I learnt how to create the look I like forever. I still have that mental yardstick in my head as I evaluate new cosmetics and it came from CD! (Sephora Canada has 2 Dior eyeshadow palettes that resemble the one that inspired me. The original was called Elegante and the 2 modern CD palettes that are similar are Touch Matte #537 & Undress #647) Although I could stretch to buy one, and maybe a lipstick nowadays I don’t want to destroy the magic. As you spoke about his philosophy I remember that moment & that collection. I remember having a similar deeply satisfying experience with clothing as I figured out what gave me that same joy - understated neutrals mixed with accents of colour or texture etc. What made me feel great when I wore something that just felt perfect for me. Understanding that things can look good on others or on the hanger, and they’re in perfect taste and style but they just don’t work for me. Learning to reach for the things that are the coup de coeur. The extra dimension that isn’t described in words- it either works wonderfully or not at all.

I think fashion changes too quickly nowadays to follow slavishly; too expensive to try and, anyway, I don’t want to look like everyone else. Although many people try. I love an appropriate detail; I just found a beautiful skirt with a flared hem and a row of self covered buttons above a small slit, centre back. And yes, a lot of money isn’t needed for style. Wise words.

My style is abit rock chic, boho and jeans n tees, I have learnt such great tips from you and added classic peices to mix in such as trench coat, charlotte gainsbourg blazer from zara and im in love with cashmere jumpers thank god for ebay , I'm on a tiny budget so very picky now 🤣 I'm slowly building a better wardrobe but still keeping my style. This is a superb video. In my humble opinion, I see so many ladies in England that are dressed to cover their body but not dressed to suit their body or their age. For instance, if the tops of your arms are slender and your neckline is good, then by all means wear the ‘slashed sleeve’ effect but if not then leave well alone. It is a pity that this topic of dressing well is not incorporated in Senior Schools at the start of Art and or Textiles Lessons. What a lot the pupils could learn over the course of their time at school and maybe learn to spend money wisely on what they wear.

I loved this video, Marie-Anne. Such a good reminder that money isn't elegance or being stylishly dressed. :) Truly and without exaggeration, I think of your words, over the year or so I have followed your channel, each time I dress. Especially, I think again when I put on my coat, scarf and bag. I even concern myself with which umbrella goes best each day! :)

I have a book by Christian Dior called The Little Book of Fashion that is a fun and interesting read. This was a nice mindful video reminding us all that money cannot buy style. Ha! Anne Marie... Dior was so right! I think it boils down to knowing, loving and respecting yourself and holding that in mind in all the choices you make in life including what you purchase in terms of clothing and how you dress yourself. If you care too much about what others think or how you think they might judge you, then you are too vulnerable to the wiles of advertising. And as we all know, advertisers try to fool us into believing that we 'need' things that we don't need at all. Christian Dior's observations could potentially open up a huge debate on personal choice, the influence of our societies, capitalism, the positives and negatives of the clothing and fashion industry, the current cost of manufacturing and purchasing clothes and of course the issue of sustainability...much too heavy for the season that's in it!!! I think quote #2 could also mean that details must be done well. That when quality, craftsmanship, are inadequqte in carrying out the little details , that can spoil the look. For example, a dress I bought as a student, for a dance. It had elegance in the cut, in the black fabric, and the way it fit me, but it had a cheap, ugly jewel sewn on at the bust for detail. I removed the poorly done detail, bought a nicer quality piece and sewed it on instead. I thought I turned out quite elegant!

+++ Indeed you can make clothing your own by changing some details to you own taste. You also can dye clothing. For example i had a beige cashmere scarf that i dyed into dusty fuchsia. No one else has that scarf in that color ;). Or when colors are too outspoken you can easily wash them in (more or less intense) tea ( just standard english breakfast tea will do) to make them more neutral. Tea is a great natural dye for clothing. It will not fade.
