I was very fortunate to have seen Mississippi John Hurt live at the Newport Folk Music Festival. Certainly a great blues artist.

You make guitar look easy John - I am struggling after many months to play a delta blues rhythm from you still but I will keep practising. Slow finger picking tunes seem to suit me fingers better but thank you the great lesson.

Thank you for the Coffee Blues fingering pattern. I have been trying to figure that out for a bit now. Hammer on the E! who knew. You rock and have some serious thumb picking skills, keep doing your thing man.

People often mistake John hurt’s picking technique for Merle Travis’, even though Mississippi was one of, if not the first to do it, before Merle was even born !

John, like you, I am a big fan of John Hurt. I cannot seem to learn from watching youtube(some glitch in my brain). If I become a premium member, can I find exactly what to practice to get this sound under my fingers? I'm not new to fingerstyle but so far, all I can play is fingerstyle rhythm. I need to know how to practice a song that will teach me melody plus bass. Sorry for the long post, but I have singed up for premium on other teachers and was not able to learn from them. Your teaching style looks great from here.

I'm a premium member and I think it's good value. There's a good mix of short lessons like this and longer in depth courses that will walk you through a tune note by note and finger by finger. 99% of lessons have downloadable pdf tab which I find indispensable. John also has a nice roadmap to steer you from the first basics of finger picking through to pretty advanced stuff like John Hurt tunes. Look up the tuesday blues on St James Infirmary for a good example.

I am able to provide more resources in my membership than I am here on KZfaq, which I think add to the learning experience. Like Richard mentioned downloadable tabs and even a tab player that really helps alot of folks since you can slow it down and loop trouble spots for targeted practice. I'd be happy to have you if you decide to give it a shot! The roadmap + practice should really get this sound happening for you.

As I watch videos of John Hurt I see that he anchored his pinky and ring finger on top of his guitar and didn't move them as he finger picked with the other three fingers.

Enrolled in the course, seeking a tutorial on the fingering and a TAB file to get the 'roll', syncopation, and other finger and thumb picking on Candyman. But the PDF file will not download.

@@BluesGuitarInstitute Sure, once I figure out how. I have been looking for a decent tutor to get me into MJH's execution. I promised myself once I got my shoulder and right thumb surgically repaired and healed I would resume this journey. If you have a shortcut to get the support ticket, let me know.

I just watched a James Taylor interview and he said that he uses “bionic nails”! Says that his own fingernails wouldn’t last a week on the road and that he’s been using these things for 40yrs! Have you ever heard of them? My ring fingernail always splits like shale and is useless. Need these bionic nails. ALSO, I have a problem with my “attack” with my nails and get a scratchy sound. Do I have to relearn how to fingerpick? Damn! Thanks!

I am a big fan of MJH and teach several of his songs in my membership. This was a high level video that didn't get all that - as you mentioned - wasn't all that detailed. Hope you have a great day. Cheers! John
