When I fish with the menace, I try to match what I’m trying to match. I’ve had an immense amount of success with running it as a craw trailer for smallmouth and then for largemouth I go vertical as if it were a baitfish

Depends on what you're trying to get your jig to do imo- if you want it to swim deeper in the column turn it vertical- if you want it to stay shallow, up high, where you can see it- turn it horizontal. The horizontal orientation of the tail creates resistance and helps keep the bait higher in the column. Having a wide, flat body on the bait also helps it come over logs and stuff without turning over on its side when the tail is turned horizontally. If the jig turns over on its side the hook can and usually does dig in and you're hung up. But turned vertically you can get more of a darting/hunting action if you pump your rod, you can stay deeper without having to slow down so much, and if you select the right trailer all you have to do is literally chunk and wind. The trailer will cause the jig to rock from side to side, making the skirt flare- so you don't have to impart any action. You can just wind it in at the right speed.

I usually use between 30-50 depending on cover

I use 20lb for urban creek fishing in woody cover/light-medium vegetative cover. The only problem with braid is that if the wind blowing strong, it can parasail into hazards and create snags especially when using lighter weights.
