Episode 3. Henry switches over to a prosecution role, but he's far from happy about it. The defendant is a 12-year-old girl accused of murdering a nine-year-old child, and the trial becomes a choice between one bad verdict and another that could be even worse.
The Brief follows the work of defence barrister Henry Farmer (Alan Davies), whose complicated personal life manages to overlap into his work. With an overbearing workload, debt and alimony payments to meet, as well as being in love with the wife of a prominent politician who won't leave her husband for him, Henry is forced to set his own demons to one side to tackle cases that only he can win. The show was described by the Radio Times as an "engaging blend of courtroom drama, suspense, intrigue and humour".

It was implied that the mother of the witnesses coached and controlled them and it was clear that the defense failed to call a witness who could have incriminated one of them. We were consistently being tipped off that the witnesses were guilty in previous scenes. The witness the defense failed to call could have incriminated one of them. The turn-about at the end with the lingering shot of the defendant looking sinister seemed like a cheesy way of suggesting that, even if he was uncertain himself, getting her put away was the right outcome. If that was intended to reverse the suspicion of the witnesses crafted in previous scenes, it flopped.

This episode appears to be building up to Farmer's son having serious issues, which he as a deeply loving father and barrister is good to have to face in later episodes. His ex-wife is over controling yet doesn't add that their son has panic attacks and sleep walks to her list of does and dont's. A terrilbly serious conscious omission. Also she doesn't give him any pocket money, so he steals his father's phone money. Is appears he too is acting out like the accused girl. Farmer's son can emotionally identify with her, which is why he says she didn't do it, even if she looks crazy. Maybe the script writers will evolve this issue that has now been created?

The boy should've given a better explanation on why he thought she was innocent. Kids do have their own perspectives that most adults (if not all) tend to overlook because we accept and acknowledge fact over indefinite conjecture when in fact we could borrow their assumption and observe it.

Although Alan Davies seems like a nice chap, he is extremely unconvincing as a barrister - especially one who's supposed to be a bit of a physical hard man on the side. In particular, his speech impediment doesn't seem to have affected his career as a comedian, but I'm not sure that a barrister could get away with it in court.

Paul Brasier I'd agree *if* the Church were an institution upholding Biblical principles. The RCC e.g. is not a Christian organisation at all. It doesn't even teach the most basic elements of Christ's life, death and resurrection. It was birthed out of quite pagan practices among the ancient Romans. Pedophily, homosexuality, bestiality, sun worship, witchcraft, to name a few, those were all acceptable and subtly hidden behind seemingly innocent rituals and feasts. Incidentally, sexual and subsequent homosexual "revolutions" precede the end of civilisations. The Romans knew this and found a clever way to prevent their reign from ending. And behold, the RCC was born. But...their nasty practices continued. To. This. Day. It's undoubtedly just as bad in other institutions that call themselves *the* Church. Listen, the best thing is to buy a decent study Bible (an accurate translation, perhaps a parallel Bible even), a concordance, a dictionary and a notebook so you can learn what the Lord actually says and start your spiritual life with Him as opposed to in a church. These people claiming to hear from Him or to be your go-between are charlatans. All the best.

Attacking any church, and those who attend them, is a journey well worth taking. Religion is for the empty headed. Catholic adherents just love diddling little boys, for instance, and let's not forget the trashy nuns who have behaved so despicably down the years.
