Sean, I’m an old guy, retired, that has taken up the guitar.,Really trying hard with ‘old’ fingers. But, I have watched dozens of videos(a couple I subscribe to) and I look for not just instructional, but inspiration, as well. You are laid back and take the time to give advice on ‘shortcuts’ that I can use with my hands….. short fingers, as well. Anyway, I love your channel and always look forward to a new video. Cheers from Tennessee( Nashville area)!

Thanks for the inner workings of your experience. It sounds like you’re the assistant to the assistant pro musician 😂. Those salty comments are hilarious, thanks for sharing. Would love to hear your process on songwriting, mainly melody and harmonizing but please share away. I am a songwriter at heart and a functional guitarist.

Hello Sean, I’ve always appreciated that you try to equip your watchers/ students with the things that really make a difference in one’s playing instead of what a formal type of instruction deems you should be working on. As an example, nothing has transformed my playing and improved my sound more than palm muting, and yet with all the formal instruction I’ve had, palm muting was never mentioned. So, as always, thanks so much for all your help! 😎🤙

Hairpin was insightful about how lots of people experience relationships. its real. If one listens to it as roadmap to learning to avoiding some pitfalls and having a better experience on the next relationship. Its actually is in line with how you talk about playing guitar, IMHO. So that is its strength with of course the rest of excellent. Writing songs from you life experiences with your observations, perceptions, and reactions is going to be appealing as its shares into the listener's own life experiences that is the draw. You style of playing works for me it one of the more cogent than others teaching on the tube. It allows my left hand to get to longer guitar scales as 25" or more. You chords are like drop chords. I watch all your videos. Your description of the relationship of chords and scales works for me. You take the theory to a practical way to actually play music is a more direct approach. Just as you said you learn to actually count rhythm strumming rather than do down ups. See I actually pay attention. Thanks for making musical playing more approachable.

I can't believe I watched the whole video. But, you got me with the 4 string idea. That's how I play guitar too. The top E string is to low and the bottom e string is too high, and they're troublesome to play. So, I play a 4 string guitar, except when I'm playing individual notes. I also played Kazoo in a live performance with some friends cause I was too lousy a musician to play anything else.

For sure! on the Songwriting topics, imho. Your vids are very helpful, always cut through to the good stuff, that'd be great! I saw this fellow (bassist, Victor Wooten) do instruction on looper pedal and song creation. He didn't so much get into the weeds of theory, more about song structure and genre and building a piece, and listening and feeling what you've done so far.. I'm probably not explaining it very well but there was something utterly great about it.. don't know if you might find it helpful on an "teacher to teacher" level? Your vids are aces.. really appreciate them and put them to use, this one very much (Also the one recently on doing the pentatonic not in the minor shape, rather in the lower-case "b" shaped major pattern. OMG! Duh! Unreal no one had brought this up sooner. So easy to go up and down fretboard now. It's just ridiculous(ly good).) Anyhoo, just thought one great teacher might like to peek in on another (though I think this was just a one-time thing for him) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oc2mY5aflpnNfaM.html

It's funny you mentioned the high E string bit, I spent some many agonizing hours trying to perfect the whole XOOOOO thing that I endured much unnecessary anguish. Years later I realized that not only is the 1st string largely optional, many many tunes are written with chords that don't include it and sound better tonaly without it. Of course I still use the 1st string but on many occasions I do a reverse Keith Richards and don't.

I have a combination of small hands and a condition called EDS - my fingers aren't very strong and they bend backwards, so it's hard putting pressure on the guitar strings (the pinky is the worst offender). So barre chords are just awful and many are near impossible for me, so I thought to myself, technically, I don't need to play ALL the notes, just play the ones I can hit *correctly*! So I'd skip the E string often and to now I thought I was just 'cheating' and felt a little like I wasn't a 'proper' guitar player. To me, I was just adapting to what I physically *could* do because I enjoyed playing guitar. So I 'm glad to see you endorsing this method and using it professionally, too! Validated!

Love it. Please, more how to write songs. I now know Usher is the dude my adult daughter listened to back in middle school and not the ticket checker guy (he's the wheat penny of middle school dance music) and please play Stairway on kazoo. On a serious note, I'm sending this to my brother who is learning guitar. You don't need the full chords, no one cares, just get the essential notes, keep time and make the singer look good.

I can play the bar chords but I wish I had discovered much earlier that it’s not just OK to play the A shape with two fingers on the middle four but that it even often sounds better. In Flamenco other than Rumba you almost never play big bar chords. Same with Bossa Nova.

well its EASY to switch keys when they are close on the circle of fifths. but if not...all bets off and here comes the strange moves so you see my chord progression i am working with here. i could easily give up and change...but the "puzzle" of chords and songwriting is the fun part. just right now i am getting weary after a week or so.

A lot of Disney tunes could be likely covers for guitar and kazoo. Donald Duck on vocals? I have some of your songs , they sound professional to me. Even if someone uploads that go viral, they won’t get more than 15 minutes of fame unless they sign up with a Music Company. It takes big bucks to make a good song great with pro session musicians and pay for all the expenses of a tour. Think of all the people and equipment and venues, as well as promoting and managing expenses. Thanks for sharing your experience, very helpful.

So two things. How did performing lead you to realize things that you didn't learn from study and practice? And, so, the point of the chord/arpeggio part of the video is that we should learn (you should teach) exactly that. You probably have. So gimme links? OK, three things. Go after the people who proclaim their superiority while using inferior logic, grammar, sentence structure, word choice... They're asking for it.

Lol, don't listen to the salty smoothbrains that don't understand the difference between doing paid gigs and maybe enough for a form of income ( professional) and being "famous". If you stay playing paid gigs you will generally accumulate all the qualities and talents of a "professional". ( with time and dedication) I suppose it takes zero effort and talent to just be a "fan" of Usher.😅 You also write and record your own material. Many "professionals" get paid to play covers and other peoples' material their entire careers. Kudos to your approach and mentality towards the subject.👍 Write a slanderous ballad to the haters with a blistering kazoo solo. That'll show em.🎉 (Kazoo is the gateway to harmonica btw🤔) Love your content. Thanks.✌
