The best prevention and cure for shoulder pain I found as a swimmer is: hanging. Read the book titled: "Shoulder Pain? The Solution & Prevention" by John M Kirsch M.D, an Orthopaedic surgeon. He claims 99% of shoulder injuries can be prevented and cured by hanging. Obviously there are other interventions which help that Brenton outlined in his video. Hanging improves mobility, stretches muscles and increases muscle strength surrounding the shoulder joint.

It will not help if your issue is weak muscles, and most issues are due to weak rotator cuff muscles. Hanging creates space but temporarily. Do strenghtening directly after hanging

I jammed my shoulder two separate times. I windmilled backwards while falling off a bosu and the second time inline skating a year later. I landed on the palm and thumb fat pads. I've strengthened and used therapy, however, age dictates limitations. I'm 72 and swim 45 minutes - an hour.

Your content is so uncannily tailored to my latest KZfaq searches that I'm going to have to join your club just to say thanks. But let me also say it anyway: thanks for making my return to swimming so much easier and more rewarding. Stay safe over there in Melbourne.

The best thing I've found so far for my shoulder pain is ab straps. I'll explain: Ab straps are slings that you attach to a chin-up/pull-up bar which allow you to perform pull-ups that isolate your lats-- i.e., your body weight is being supported by shoulder straps so you are not bearing all of your weight through your grip and forearms. But what I'll describe here is not for ab exercises, it's for stretching your shoulders. Point your elbows at the ceiling and hang the ab straps at that height. You should be able to stand on the tips of your toes to place your elbows into the straps. Then stand in place with elbows/shoulders in the straps, pointing your arms in streamline position as you (carefully) lean into the shoulder straps. Slowly lean into the straps, increasing the amount of weight you place against your streamline at the elbow/shoulders. You can imagine the fully extended arms at the top of the catch (e.g., for butterfly) and start to apply the similar (but slow and careful) pressure on the shoulders that you would at the top of your catch. Practice short mini-catches or sculls, feeling the soreness and stiffness of that shoulder joint. Slowly try to get those shoulders into a flexed position where the shoulders are above the ears (as they would be right upon the entry on butterfly, prior to the catch). As you stretch deeper you can feel the connection between the shoulder joints and the center of your back, right before your lats get engaged-- you'll probably feel your back crack and loosen up considerably, along with your shoulders.

@EdOConnor
@EdOConnor 2 жыл бұрын
@@markhooker8520 I don't know of a video specifically showing this stretch, but here's a basic video showing the use of ab slings so you can get a better idea of what they are. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNWbmbR4qd-ziqs.html What I've described above is a way to use ab slings to perform a deep shoulder stretch. I.e., positioning your body on land (vertically) in perfect streamline position, i.e., head tucked, shoulders cradling your ears/head, arms pointed straight/together, as you would when pushing off the wall of the pool) leaning into the ab slings to gradually support more of your weight. In this stretch you are not hanging off the ground, you're leaning into the slings holding a tight streamline position with your toes touching the ground. As you lean into the slings while maintaining streamline, your core will be progressively stressed, especially the load-bearing area where the slings are-- i.e., the span from your elbows/upper-arm directly through the shoulder joints and musculature through the center of your back.

Amazing flexibility tests, and stretch for my lats. Thank you so much I really needed that, as I tend to get a sore lat and neck on one side after a long swim session.

Opening the pools in Australia is good news! Unfortunately they are closing them again in Germany. It breaks my heart. Back to dry land swimming exercises on the floor in the living room and refining the breathing technique in the bath tub.... But the videos are a tremendous help either way !

The first swimer with the fins you show in the video is not rotating right.....that also generates shoulder ingury The rotation of torso is necessary for the elbow up stroke without ingury

Hey, so I was curious about something. Sometimes you talk about achieving swimming times, like improving from 1:40 to 1:30/100y. Are these times over a set distance, or is it over time like FTP on the bike?
@goulart1968
@goulart1968 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, it is pace over 100m (or yards in strange countries). But it is not like FTP (on the bike). Normally, and more so on slower swimmers, it is a matter of (better) technique and not "power". You can improve A LOT your swimming pace, not the same with you FTP (more related with your natural power base).
@zgoodhauer4512
@zgoodhauer4512 3 жыл бұрын
@@goulart1968 ok thank you! I was just curious because I feel like a terrible swimmer but can do 100y in like 1:45. I figure I couldn't hold that for say 500 yards, so I didn't know if that number was average time over an extended distance. I appreciate the reply!

What the name of the physio at the end? My shoulders keep screwing up and it's doing my head whenever I start swimming again. So disheartened as I love swimming. The one she does with the arms up meant to be 140degrees. Mine are just about 90! How do I get the flex there as she doesn't mention how to, just how to test it.

Right? I started training for a triathlon thinking running would be worst part so I just ran and biked thinking swimming would be the easy part. Now I’m sitting here unable to swim because of shoulder problems. I didn’t realize how technique driven swimming really is.

4:58 For this test I have no angle. Or in other words 180 angle. I can't lift my elbows higher than the level of my armpits. I'm a violinist, not a swimmer, but casual swimming saved me from repetitive injury on violin after hours and hours of practicing (we tend to practice almost every day of our lives for several hours, so I can imagine we are extremely tight regularly). I sometimes watch videos related to swimming and swimming techniques out of interest and sometimes out of necessity :D If someone here knows of a particular reason why my shoulders are like that (tightness vs. a minor deformity or something) would be grateful if you could let me know. Thanks!
