When a recent painting didn't go to plan, it seemed like an opportunity to share a reflection on some fundamentals. I've distilled this into 3 ideas which I think I would have found helpful when learning watercolours. Whether you're new to watercolours or a veteran, I hope you enjoy.

I felt the painting you were unhappy about looked like a wonderful painting of choppy sea under a dark sky. Just like we sometimes see in rough boat rides in the sea during a storm. Just look at after a break. It's just different from what you usually paint. It's more expressive that's all

If you consider this to be a bad painting I would be glad to take it off your hands. I enjoy watching you work. What starts out to be what one might call a mess turned into something I want to look at time and again to see what all has been presented. I saw several items that I found interesting and I felt I was standing on a nearby high spot overlooking a city in a valley during a dark time. My interpretation. I wish I could do as well. Thanks for the comments too. There has been more than one time that I too had the same thoughts. How you came through it was informative.

I know you were dissatisfied with it because of your skill level. However I have to tell you that I would be so happy to have that painting in my home it's absolutely stunning

Looks very good. Like a misty piece of Scotland. You mentioned your hake being too wet at one point. I think it is a good idea to have a couple of spare hakes because they can be wonderful to use when dry (as well as wet) . Sometimes we recognise flaws and sometimes the flaw we see can dissappear with a change of perspective over time.

What a fantastic video on what to avoid and why. I love your painting, it has tremendous atmosphere and depth. However, I understand the artist’s eye can sometimes be critical, especially towards their own art. To keep working is the KEY. Great job. Love your content, new subscriber.

Thanks Rachel, I completely agree! We'll always see our own work differently to others and the bits we're most critical of in that regard are probably different too! Consistency is the single most important thing 100%. 🫡

Hello Tim, long time subscriber and follower of your channel. I always appreciate your humble and honest reflections that you share. This one in particular was very interesting and useful. I feel that I definitely resonated with you, but your honesty and self reflection about your painting process, including what you felt were mistakes, was where the learning was so valuable. Excellent video as always! Keep it up I always look forward to your posts.🎨🖌️

As always, an informative and beautiful video. Thank you. I absolutely love the reddish earthy pigment used in the foreground of the "good" painting. The way it blends with the dark paint and creates those violets ❤

Thanks for the video Tim. I think we have all been caught out with a sky, for a multitude of reasons😬. I could seriously watch you paint for hours. Your videos are always informative, no matter how long I've been painting in watercolour. They are so relaxing too!! Right, off to have a butchers at your website.

Love you sharing your honesty I love your style I have a lot of paintings I stuff up but I call it my learning day…..do you use the same colours or try new colours how do you choose the colours you are going to use for a painting do you have a big stash of colours I love Daniel smith paints and have quite a few but I seem to buy a new colour use it a couple of times then forget I have it……sorry about all the questions ….you are one of my favourite KZfaq painters 😊

Learning day - love that. I love Daniel Smith paints as well and have a continuously growing stash, but not too crazy. I have to try and stay sensible or I know I'll need a separate room just to store paint! In terms of picking colours, I would say there are 2 aspects to it. The first is just about the mood of the painting and how the new colour will contrast with those on the page. Although I don't have a colour wheel anymore these days, I think that's a helpful way to start thinking about colours that compliment one another if it's something you haven't tried before. For example, deciding in advance to use a split complimentary colour scheme means you could decide on a single colour to use, and the other two will be decided for you. That's probably not a great approach for every painting but it can be a great way to get used to new paints especially. The second aspect is about the particular tube of paint, because the other considerations I have is the density of the pigments and the ease with which the paint granulates and I only get that feel from using the paint repeatedly in different situations. So the initial thought is about how the colours will interact together, and then it's a bit of a gut-call! I wish I could offer a more in-depth answer, maybe one day, but I hope this helps a bit. 😁

Your style is almost identical to mine with this piece though I have never tried it with watercolors… I use Sennelier oil pastels or oil sticks. Beautiful work!!

While you were successful at completely changing the look of the second painting, I really preferred the first painting. I suppose it’s always in the eye of the beholder. And of course, we are almost always our own worst critic. I hope you go back and look at the first one to see it through our eyes. I know I’m not the first one who commented positively about your first painting. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work with us.

Thanks Tara. 🙂 I appreciate it - totally valid to prefer the first one. I agree with you about being our own biggest critic too and I try to keep a relatively sane head with that but it is a challenge! Thank you for your lovely comment.

All you have to do is darken your horizon line so can easily see the perspective. Its fantastic though.

I'm surprised you signed the painting you weren't happy with. Mine go directly to back of my closet to remind myself that there are failures lurking behind the scenes--my own art version of The Picture of Dorian Gray 😅

What brand and weight of paper do you prefer?
@TimSchofieldArt
@TimSchofieldArt 2 ай бұрын
I prefer the heaviest hot pressed paper I can get - usually 300lb. Most of what I use is Saunders Waterford but I do like Arches paper a great deal too. I have a separate video about paper specifically if you'd like to know more too. 🙂

Sorry to ask - is your paper the wrong way round? You should be able to read the watermark normally or am I wrong?
@TimSchofieldArt
@TimSchofieldArt 2 ай бұрын
Hey Lani! The watermark should be visible to paint on the top that's right. Most of my paper doesn't have a visible watermark though as I cut it down from larger sheets that only have a mark along one edge. That said, I do sometimes paint on the back of a page and I'm pretty sure that was the case in the second painting here. 🙂

@TimSchofieldArt Just a question. I am still learning. Is there then a wrong and right side of the watercolour paper? Does it mean that the watermark should always be on the front, not the back?
@TimSchofieldArt
@TimSchofieldArt 2 ай бұрын
@@DinahEngelbrecht-kt5hj Hey Dinah! Cotton paper at least will have an 'up' side, which is the side you'll see the watermark on. If you hold it at an angle to the light and look closely, you may also be able to make out the faint imprint of a fine wire mesh on that side too, but it's not as obvious on some types of paper. It's quite easy to spot on Saunders Waterford, more difficult on Arches for example. From my experience at least, there are some differences when painting on the back but they're pretty minor. Pigments sometimes appear to settle into the paper more quickly on the back and can't be lifted for quite as long. They can granulate more as well, which can result in slightly less smooth gradients but not drastically so. I can't see a reason not to use the back of a page if you're practising. As a rule I start new paintings on the top side unless I'm recycling or similar. Unless you can spot a difference between the two sides that you don't like, I wouldn't worry too much about using both / either if you want to. 🙂
