Great info about a crucial, yet often over-looked piece of kit for wc painting. I have an idea about using the Scotch tape: Place a strip of kitchen roll or other absorbent material on top of the Scotch tape. Can be taped at each in to keep in place or just laid on top. Also, I vaguely recall something about using acrylic medium around the edges of watercolour paper first, before attaching tape I think. Wish I could remember exactly! It does make sense tho as the medium would repel water and offer a better surface for tape to adhere to. It would be visible on the finished piece so matte medium for best results? These may or may not work but I think are def worth a try.

Just wow ... love your philosophical thoughts around watercolor, especially this subject of black and white. Very exciting ... never tried it, but coming from photography, too, I will definitely give my watercolor in black and white a chance. I love your channel here, it is very special, very unusual, and very exciting and interesting ❤

beautiful painting! I was looking for a way to do a background sky for a very emotionally laden portrait commission of four young girls. Thank you very much for the inspiration to start experimenting with looser brushwork. I'm primarily an oil painter, but I'll use any medium that comes my way, ranging from graphite to inks, pastels and acrylics and if I need to get my head out of the detailwork, huge chunks of charcoal on the largest piece of paper I can find. unfortunately I have not yet managed to do even one decent watercolor. I wouldn't mind a tot beginners tutorial from you 😊

I haven't tried anything else except blue painter's tape. The edges of the painting are mostly straight and clean with slight leakage in spots, which I like.

As a picture framer, I totally agree the lighter frame is 100% better as the black enclosed it too much and made it look cramped in and was also far too dominant. Its great that you can make your own frames but you can buy float frame moulding in 3-4 metre lengths and save yourself so much work😉 I LOVE your artwork!

Looks very good. Like a misty piece of Scotland. You mentioned your hake being too wet at one point. I think it is a good idea to have a couple of spare hakes because they can be wonderful to use when dry (as well as wet) . Sometimes we recognise flaws and sometimes the flaw we see can dissappear with a change of perspective over time.

Here are 2 tips for you if you use painters tape when painting on watercolour paper: 1st tip: the best method I have found to stop painters tape from tearing the paper, is the warm it with a hairdryer before you peel it off, and as you peel it, keep it flat to the paper, so that you are not pulling it straight up. 2nd tip: use 100% cotton paper when you paint, because cheap paper will tear more easily in my experience. I hope those two tips help.

I was taught to use: boxing tape (the brown tape used on shipping boxes) first you dampen your WOODEN board (at least 1” plywood)next dampen you paper using a supper soft sponge such as a “sea sponge”. Do this by simply laying the paper on the dampened board and very lightly with the moist sponge over the paper very delicately so as to not damage the paper, do this until the paper is wet all over smoothing out all the warping and bubbles as you go. The after you feel like you have done the best you can at getting all the ripples and any bubbles for sure, you are ready to add the boxing tape. You will need to dampen the glue side of the tape before you apply it to the edges of the paper and this will damage the paper under the boxing tape when you are finished with your painting but you can just cut it off. After you have applied the boxing tape let the paper and tape completely dry. You are then ready to watercolor and your paper should not buckle. I used to use tape as well but this is a much better method especially with full sheets of watercolor paper.

Although a couple people in the comments have mentioned it, I'm surprised that the long-time staple of watercolorists was not mentioned, wide-sized gummed (Kraft) paper tape. There are more modern equivalents designed specifically for watercolor. For example, Lukas Wet Adhesive Tape for Watercolor Painting.

What a fantastic video on what to avoid and why. I love your painting, it has tremendous atmosphere and depth. However, I understand the artist’s eye can sometimes be critical, especially towards their own art. To keep working is the KEY. Great job. Love your content, new subscriber.

Thanks Rachel, I completely agree! We'll always see our own work differently to others and the bits we're most critical of in that regard are probably different too! Consistency is the single most important thing 100%. 🫡

I’ve made good results with a combination of washi tape und masking tape. I use the washi tape to tape off the edges of the painting and then use masking tape to tape it to my painting surface. So far I have had good results 😄

Good to know, as someone who only troubled with watercolour (and trouble it was) in recent years, having painted in oil and acrylic for over 50, that I stumbled on the best tape - the broad masking tape that you use. Even then, some papers do seem to damage more easily than others: you always need to be careful, and not just rip it off.
@TimSchofieldArt
@TimSchofieldArt 2 ай бұрын
Hey Robert, thank you. Agree with the importance of putting some care into removing the tape, I've often been a poor example of it, at least with paintings that I intend to crop. I'm putting more paintings behind glass again recently though, so I've been a little friendlier to the edges as a general rule! I would like to have made a point of mentioning it in the video too. I recorded some careful removals and some careless ones and I think pretty much all the footage was used but I think I said nothing about it. I've been using some Arches paper recently for the first time in a few years and even anticipating the differences it's still always interesting shifting back and forth. Tape aside, I find the differences in how they respond to paint quite difficult to describe, too. Appreciate the comment. 👍
