Today I learned that stingray skin is used for katana handles. That's the most metal thing I've ever seen

Thanks for watching! Antique Katana's tsuka might not be suitable to be used for Iai training or cutting practice. I always make new Tsuka with 2 bamboo pins, and reinforce the Tsuka with Stingray skin. We make videos about Japanese culture and discuss the scientific theories behind!! Please subscribe! and join us on our journey!!

I was curious about the making of new Tsuka and saya is it like our western practice of different holsters for different environments but same gun (sword)? Did ancient samurai have many saya? Formal, battle, wet environment and daily carry?

I would wager because you both are oriental and wear black obi in your videos and have katana as a central topic of your channel. On top of that you also have a very similar presentation style to one another.

Well some katana might have had water buffalo horn mekugi but i think that they needed a buffalo horn einforcement in the tsuka part of the mekugi ana And I've seen a couple of tantō and tachi with brass or gold mekugi but i think those were court swords

Don't forget that it's imperative to have good quality, seasoned bamboo for the mekugi.

Hey just wanted to see if you could make a video about katana maintenance, preferably older Nihonto maintenance. I was recently gifted a nihonto from the Edo period, around 1650’s from my father in law. I know the basic maintenance the traditional way, but am just nervous I am doing something wrong. Furthermore, I was only gifted the koshirae, and do not have a shirasaya mounting. How could I go about getting one? If you do make a video, please be very detailed about all the materials!

Some people enjoy real stingray skin but others think that it is inhumane to take the skin of sting ray but in my opinion you can feel the difference between a 100$ artificial sting ray katana compared to a full wrap sting ray handle katana that would cost 3000$ -10000$
@samurai-tavern

I haven’t known that the full wrap stingray katana cost that much! If you want to make your own tsuka with artificial sting ray skin, can you get one from online? or is there any way to buy these skins?

I know i am going to be slaughtered for this comment, but my curiosity is killing me: why using only one pin? Wouldn't two of them add strength and stability to the sword?

For the US/Euro cutters. If you got the money and go custom, go for the full wrap for sure. And do not use spare chopsticks as mekugi pegs...
@samurai-tavern
@samurai-tavern Жыл бұрын
😂😂 exactly, the mekugi pegs can look like spare chopstick at the first sight. Agree! Full wrap is definitely tougher.
