Just what I needed ! Thank you for the video! You're so right people get frustrated because they don't understand fully the OT but you don't need all the functionality all the time to have fun.

Awesome video and you’re 💯 % correct, I actually got it last month and kept it simple and I’m really enjoying it. It’s not a horror story like it’s made out be.

What helped me the first year was learning how to load samples into the T1-T8 tracks, using the effects, mixers, sequencer basics. Only a few years later did I get into how to use the arranger tool, fancy fader tricks with p-locks and conditional trigs. I still am learning it years later! I also learned how to sample and use that tool as that takes some effort to correctly get samples recorded at decent audio levels.

Its the shit, but no doubt it could use some modernization and streamlining to make it more accessible like the digi/takt line up.

Man I love my Octatrack so much, I recently bought a second one (I have a MKII, and just picked up a MKI for super-cheap). My advice is just to start with simple samples, the ones that come with it. Use one shots and experiment with parts. Everything after that is organic. Take a ‘I need to do something so I’ll learn that one thing’ approach with the Octa and you’ll be unstoppable and know the machine before you realize it :)

Thats good advice. I definitely went the opposite route and have spent the past few months watching and rewatching tutorials and using EZbot templates which has brought me to a place where I have a pretty decent high-altitude understanding of the machine but a lack a personal “relationship” with it.

yup that is what I did and only later got into more advanced stuff like using parameter locks on the A/B scenes with the fader, how to sample and mangle samples as well as using trig conditions. I love it!

I was looking at the Octatrack recently (why I ended up here 😂) but I thought it odd that the MKII still uses Compact Flash. I do have an MPC Live II but you can put an SSD into those.

You're not wrong. Thing is, the Octatrack is basically a 13 year old machine, since the MK2 didn't do anything to update the firmware, just updated the look, nicer buttons, better screen. Pretty much no groove boxes at the time were allowing you to install internal hard-drives, and hardware samplers in general had been overtaken by DAWs. This is arguably one of the reasons why the OT focuses more on being a "performance sampler", aka live sound mangler/sequencer, than a focused sampler. There's an endless ongoing debate about whether Elektron would ever make an Octatrack MK3 with more modern features (contemporary storage options, Overbridge, MIDI over USB, expanded/expandable ins/outs, updated FX engines), though the consensus seems to be that everyone wants one, and it will never happen (the main designer of the OT has long since left the company).

@@robertgarvansnyder4665 I get that they are old but still they could have taken a slower approach like with the MPC range where the hardware changes in small increments and the bigger changes are mostly in the software. I recently got the Syntakt as my first Elektron box and I think it would pair well with the Octatrack and the CF usage is not a deal breaker for me, just a tad surprising. I think it was a missed opportunity to maybe do something small like add an SD reader in the MKII 😉

@@symbiat0 I don't disagree with you, maybe I've just been in the "acceptance" phase of missed opportunities with the Octatrack MK2 for longer.

@@symbiat0dude youre mistaken, the MPC’s didnt have hardly any hardware or software changes over the years. the only reason there were software changes were arguably bc of JJOS. and the MPC 5000 just included the alesis micron/miniak symth engine. and you could totally put in Hard drives/cd players in the 1000, 2500, 5000, (unsure on the 4000) and before that you could attatch hard drives with SCSI. and you could buy expansion boards for FX and multiple outs on the 2000 and 2000xl… and they all did one thing, sampling and making beats. the whole idea of gradual software changes came about due to JJOS which was a huge middle finger to akai for crippling their products. honestly it would be sick if the original programmer went rogue and decided to add new features and mods to the firmware/hardware. (like i think the battery mods people have done are incredibly dope, i think it would be sick if someone did that with an SD card reader where the cf slot is as well, but it seems like effort and idk if you would have to fuck with the programming to achieve such a thing) tbh i heard the digitone guy left the company as well, if they did it really makes me wonder what the leadership is doing other than hiking the prices of their old gear up and making new sample packs. and it bums me out that the Syntakt only has 12 tracks, like where are the 4 midi tracks to sequence external gear on? it seems like they just held back on it to intentionally make it into an update like song mode. also im just gonna vent: the fact you cant use the digitones arpeggiator to sequence external gear on midi was a huge missed opportunity. plus no ratcheting and only 4 tracks, it really seems like the digitone was the redheaded stepchild of that generation

@@FANKANablesome concepts are portable across the OT/DT divide, like the sequencer trigs and tracks and p-locks, and certain input conventions. But DT doesn’t have scenes or parts, which means the topology of a project is different. The project data structure of the DT is shared with DN and ST.

the digitone and the digitakt i thought were pretty good at introducing the elektron sequencer, the elektron arpeggiator, p locks, sound locks, and the base width filter etc and the syntakt has quite a bit of the the analog rytm’s geneseed as well

When you say “90% of people get it for the cross fader” what you’re really saying is they get it for it’s sequencer which the fader expresses.
