less is more. perc. sounds a little too dense / cluttered... it's nice to have some space, as opposed to a wall of layered drum patterns

Nice jam! Love my octatrack. I refuse to ever part ways with it. Just wish they would reboot monomachine but on steroids. You have to take it slow with elektron devices and nothing to be ashamed of people. It’s worth the effort. Insane modulations and mangling can be had that others can’t come close.

Man, nice video to explain your workflow. However, that's a huge wall of sound. Sometimes a thoughtful amount of less is much more. Thanks for sharing, and keep it up posting more! We appreciate it!

This machine is so not able to be fully functional as it could be-such a terrible system of files-parts-patterns. Samples are so not utilized for variety. I would pay for new firmware

"it’s not meant to be (a drum machine) “ It’s meant to be nearly anything you want it to be, and do a great job at it. Maybe it’ll fall a little short as a drum synthesizer compared to dedicated drum synths, (Though with single cycle waveforms, fast envelopes and effects like the comb filter, it can generate some great percussion) - But as a straight sample based drum machine, nothing can touch it imo.

What helped me the first year was learning how to load samples into the T1-T8 tracks, using the effects, mixers, sequencer basics. Only a few years later did I get into how to use the arranger tool, fancy fader tricks with p-locks and conditional trigs. I still am learning it years later! I also learned how to sample and use that tool as that takes some effort to correctly get samples recorded at decent audio levels.

obviously it's not called overbridge, but it has a similar thing ie: editor and record multitracks over usb. nowadays thats pretty standard when it comes to guitar multifx pedals

I love and hate my octatrack at the same time. I have used it for sound design in animations and keep it for that one purpose but for making music it is so uninspiring and troublesome. Recently been using an rc505 and pulsar 23 an those are like dragons, so much hands on fun and instantly playable. Octatrack takes ages to get anywhere... But when you get there it sounds good (eventually)

I mean 8 track loopers are pretty rare. Obviously if your buying an octatrack just to use it as looper its probably not worth the price, but if you already have one or want to do sampling as well its an excellent looper. Why buy a dedicated loop pedal instead of using what you have?

@@tezeta3725 you're right, the comment makes no sense without context. I'm a guitarist with too many loopers already.. and getting into synths without trying to be DAWless.

I had okta and i had to say it's a shit drum machine, yeah yeah - it could play samples, but okta doesn't have 1/4 that analog rythm has. I dont know how that works for Fjaak, but to me everything that goes from okta for drums is liveless, and flat.

I was almost one of those that would have put my octa on offer up or reverb, the early firmware didn't sleep or have a screen saver so my screen got burned with the arp page! It's not really a bother, and doesn't effect workability. I've started with pickup machine right now, because it's an incredible and powerful looper that I can just jump in and start playing around so I don't get discouraged as I did after I first bought it, but also it's really easy that way to record complex and original samples. My next goal is to chop up pickup loops into mangled samples in a flex machine. I'm planning on having my RD-8 go to a thru machine and to record the 808 style drums so I wouldn't have to lug the drum machine around, or use the drum machine live in a thru and perhaps record synth basses from my matriarch or eurorack so I'll never have to lug that shit around which wouldn't be ideal- if I ever decide to play live again. I'm trying to learn how to make more DnBish rhythms like chopping up the "amen break" or something, which I realised the octatrack would probably excel at. So after years of playing with CV/gate with no midi or centralised midi machine after my mpc1000 broke (I think it was the motherboard or flash memory went sour cause it doesn't store samples), I'm dedicating myself to learning the machine despite how poorly the manual is written; the manual really leaves shit out that KZfaq tutorials fill in and they are just more my learning type. Anyway, thanks for the vote of confidence!

I don’t think you understand WHY Elektron used analog saturation instead of digital. Digital systems are really bad at saturating signals without causing a lot of aliasing. If you personally can’t tell the difference, maybe that’s why you’re using a guitar fx processor for mastering.

Great video mate. I’m a guitarist who got into dj’ing and production, for years all I wanted was a loop pedal that you could pre set loop lengths. Couldn’t find one so bought a octatrack Morningstar mc6 set to trigger the pickup machines, record, start, stop and machine up/down and I have the ultimate looper

I think it mainly has this reputation of being complicated and scary because everybody's saying so. When I ask those who are afraid how far they're into the manual, most of the times the next thing I hear is "oh yeah too long, didn't read. I don't need a manual anyways", which is a funny thing to say when you're stuck ^^ 4:30 good points. It makes sense to start with only a small subset of the functionalities. The rest comes when time is right. When you're ready for more input, you automatically start searching for information. 💪

Here is what I am wondering about using the fractal as a master processor. Let’s say I want to play my guitar as well? Are you routing that through the octatrack or directly into the fractal and that’s cool because I’m pretty sure the fractal has the ability to route different effects to the guitar, than to the stereo out coming from the Octatrack. Can you confirm that, because if that’s true, that’s even more cool. That makes it an end of chain mixer… I also assume that frees up a track in the Octatrack since you won’t need a master track.
@ytheeasinine
@ytheeasinine 10 ай бұрын
There's a couple ways you can route it. In my most recent video where I'm using the OT as a guitar looper, I've got my guitar plugged into the FM3 and running amp/cab sims, delay, and reverb, and then going out of the FM3 into the OT for additional fx and mangling, then out of the OT into the FM3 for mastering. The FM3 has 1 mono input and 2 stereo inputs, and 2 pairs of stereo outputs, which is great for routing additional gear. If you don't want to run guitar into the OT, you can have one signal chain just for guitar, and a separate signal chain for the OT. In terms of the master track, depends on what you're using it for. If you're just using it for compression and saturation, then you could use the FM3 for that. If you're using it for scenes to do global changes like filter cutoffs and freeze delays, gonna be more convenient to do that on the master track than adjusting individual tracks.
