My husband has such a good perspective on making mistakes that cost money. He says that it’s just tuition for life school. It’s normal to spend thousands on college or trade school to help us learn. Mistakes are some of the best ways to learn and paying tuition for it isn’t a big deal.

Good concept to give yourself forgiveness. I always say before I purchase something, was the cost of this worth x amount of working hours? I'm not free of debt but I'll work a regular side job to keep it down and I wish I had the time back instead so you make choices to limit spending so you have more time. ⏳️ 🕐

Borrowing is really a lost art. I went to exactly one wedding in the last decade, so I borrowed a dress from a friend who went to multiple weddings every year. She actually loaned her whole collection and I chose which one to wear. Another of her dresses had a broken zipper, so I took it off and put in a new one by hand. She LOVED it, because I fixed something she didn't know how to.

So good! The ice cream scoop example was so helpful. 7 years ago we had a house warming party, and a neighbor brought wine. I pulled out my juice cups and mason jars, but she was like, “You can’t have wine without a wine glass!!” So she ran back home and brought back a bunch of wine glasses and told me to keep them. I haven’t used them since. I think the feeling of someone else being disappointed that I don’t have something, keeps me holding onto them. This was just the video I needed to feel permission to donate them. Plus, if I ever need wine glasses for another party, I can always purchase them at a thrift store, then re-donate them afterwards. I have yet to see a thrift store that didn’t have about 50 wine glasses available at any given time.

So interesting thing. I was giving away my baby stuff left and right to anyone I knew needed something. I thought we were done. Turns out we aren’t and I had urges of anxiety because I had given so much away… All I had to do was tell people I am pregnant and people are gathering things for me and keeping an eye out for whatever I need. It’s so incredible and humbling to see God work through people that I had helped by giving them my baby stuff. I don’t need to buy maternity clothes now and these friends are going to be saving us so much money. That being said-will I be giving my baby stuff away when we are officially done? Heck yes.

People can be very kind in different situations. When we ended up bringing a newborn granddaughter home with us because DSS took her from the parents, EVERYONE was more than generous helping us get started with a new baby! We were so grateful for all of the things we received. We still had a 2 year who wasn’t out of pull ups or diapers yet. So we had our hands full.

Dawn, your ice cream example in the intro was super cute! I have to tell you about the time in high school we had a foreign exchange student from Denmark stay with us; one night I got ice cream out and while I was distracted digging around in the clutter filled drawers for the ice cream scoop and the special bowls, I turned around to find my Danish friend had “unpeeled” the box around the ice cream (it wasn’t the kind in a tub) and she had gotten a knife out and some small plates and SLICED two rectangular slices of ice cream off, put them on the plates and recovered the paper box around the ice cream. I was shocked and amazed at how clever that was! They looked like pieces of bread sitting there and she explained it’s so that the slice of cake can sit right on top of the ice cream slice and you get both cake and ice cream easily in each bite no need for bowls or a scoop! It was one of the many little culture shock moments where I learned lots of good a life lessons that I still remember to this day - especially as a mom trying to keep from falling into the “what if” trap and instead just keep it simple so I can be more present and enjoy the activity with my kids instead of preparing for it and/or dreading all the clean up required afterwards ✌🏼 thanks for all you do! You’ve changed my perspective on so many things!

I used to have a round Tupperware caretaker. It disappeared at some point (it was stolen during a move with other items ☹️) When I make a Bundt cake I think about how it would fit perfectly in that taker. Instead I frost the cake on the underside of a large lid that fits a large bowl. The bowl is my topper. Not ideal but it’s worked for over 5 years. 😉

I'm at a later stage in life (51), I live alone now with my 2 furbabies and my 3 kids visit often but my home is at a stage where its so easy to manage and to pull back to reset stage, love love love it, my housework I do as a routine but it honestly takes about 30 min a day to do it, never have to do any deep cleaning or seasonal cleaning. I definitely look at what I want to manage in my home and its more cosy now than it was before, home is always at a state that if a surprise visitor came it would look like I clean loads every day. It's even rubbing off on my kids in there homes. So wish I'd found this way of living many years ago but better late than never, I've been living this way since pandemic first hit and I'm never ever going back to old way, Justin Case don't live here anymore, he got evicted along with stuff I no longer needed or wanted to manage x

I have gotten rid of thousands of items over the course of my life and especially the last few years, and there are certainly items I ended up repurchasing after decluttering. In fact, I’m pretty sure just about everyone does rebuy at lest one thing, it’s very normal - you can’t always predict what’s going to come up in life. I think many people assume they’ll have to rebuy many many things if they declutter, but in reality it ends up being very very few. For myself, I got rid of a sewing machine as I was decluttering my fantasy self who sews her own wardrobe (if only!), but then less than a month later I had all sorts of random things coming up that needed mending but hand sewing was just not cutting it. So, I repurchased the sewing machine knowing (instead of guessing or assuming, big difference!) that for our household a sewing machine is a need. So happy to have it back! Other than the sewing machine, there were a couple of books I repurchased (I re-read books a lot). But that’s it. Can count repurchases on one hand. Once again, that’s out of thousands of decluttered items! So, unless it’s something truly irreplaceable, my personal experience has shown that for myself it’s better to just let the item go, because the odds I’ll actually need it are very very small.

When my husband and I decided to get out of debt and came up with the six-year plan, we knew there was discomfort built into in because we were taking a lot of our income to pay down our debt. We never went hungry or anything, but a lot of the little extras weren't bought or were saved for. Plus as we go on we're living more simply and what is purchased (for the most part) is replacements/food/something that's needed. I'm finding the less you have, the less you find you actually need. It's been quite a journey coming from the 'buy, spend, buy' background I grew up in.

The ice cream scoop is a touchy subject for me! (I know you just chose it as an example for today!) "Someone" in our household used the big spoons to scoop out ice cream. Every. Single. One. Now ALL the big spoons are straight. The curve is gone and they cannot be bent back into the right position. Every time I see those spoons, I'm reminded. Don't use spoons to serve ice cream!!! Ice cream scoops are made for a reason!!! 😉

Ah,the “just in case” syndrome. I’ve heard you mention it before but today it really hit home. The imagined scenarios I come up with while trying to declutter is amazing and listening to you today I realized they will never happen. Usually these scenes involve another person or persons as well as myself which makes it even more ridiculous. In the last year and a half I have buried my Soul Mate of fifty five years, had my brother move in to go through horrible cancer treatment at a nearby hospital and I moved to a different home. Dawn, here’s another perspective: My extra items are not saved for “just in case” scenarios, but because prices are climbing by the week! I buy extras of staples and put them away so they don’t cost so much the next time I need them. I don’t see this as clutter, but as being economically minded. Also, we live in a rural community, and I don’t want to drive to town to get something if I don’t have to, which would make the cost of staples even greater than they are on the shelf in the store.

I often buy multiples of staple items when I'm purchasing those items. It reduces the number of trips to a store I have to make. As long as you have room to store that item and you actually use them I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Especially when it's an item we use a lot of such as laundry soap or toilet paper. However, being more mindful of the rate that I actually consume items has helped me to realize I don't need 5 extra bottles of shampoo lying around taking up space. One is plenty. It's not really saving me money if I stock up on things I never use. Plus there's usually always some type of sale or deal you can find when you really do need to purchase more of that item.
@sinkintostillness
@sinkintostillness 9 ай бұрын
If it adds value to your life then it's not clutter. I can't resonate with staples for example as I've used about 12 in 30 years, so even holding onto the stapler is a bit pointless to me. I do bulk buy items we do use though, I like to save money and stock up when they're on offer. I just make sure to restrict the purchases to where they will fit to store. Obviously location plays a key factor to lifestyle too. You're naturally going to hold higher inventory if you have further to go to get items. I just think that so many items are sold as single use items and we've forgotten to be creative and use what we have at times. For example the jobs of pizza cutter, egg slicer and peeler can all be done with a sharp knife.

Staples = basic items (generally for meals) kept on hand so you aren't running to the store for an ingredient or two every time you make dinner, bake etc. Reading through your comment, it is clear that you do keep staples on hand. 😉 I agree that having a space where those items are restricted to is a wise way to keep from buying too many extras.☺

Thank you! I didn’t realize I needed to hear someone say, “Yes, it’s a risk, but it has rewards and it’s okay if you make mistakes.” I struggle most with getting into the decluttering zone and giving away or throwing away something that cannot be replaced. Either something that isn’t made anymore or something sentimental. But I still think this philosophy applies. Because I will be okay. Even if I regret decluttering something, I will be okay. Better than okay, because the reward of living in a clutter free space is immense. Keeping it simple-chocolate ice cream is my favorite, and yes, I do love when it gets little melty!

But somehow we still have a garage and storage unit full of things we need to go through. Your channel is very helpful. But I am embarrassed to admit I now have 3 ice cream scoops. I had 2, but the one from her house was better than either I had. Guess I can now get rid of the two I had before. I will definitely be keeping one. But not 3. There, I said it out loud so I would actually do it. So many things to get rid of/donate/throw away. Hubby has some emotional attachment to this stuff, so that makes it even harder.

Dawn, I completely agree that borrowing things is such a good idea. Also, if you have other family members you could agree to buy items between you that are necessary and share them. This could apply to tools, gardening equipment, party bowls and dishes, decorating supplies or large pieces of kitchen electrical equipment e.g. cake mixers or bread makers etc. I want to add that you offer great advice and I like the fact that you back up your advice with studies or additional information.

I have decluttered 77 boxes of things from our home over 2 years. It feels so good to have room in closets and dressers. I did declutter a pizza stone a year ago. I stopped making pizza when I became gluten free. I have a very severe allergy to wheat and gluten. So at Maple Weekend a customer told me they had a gluten free pizza recipe that was great. When I got the recipe it called for a pizza stone. Well my husband said you can’t take your money with you so go ahead and get another one. So I did and the pizza was great. I thought well I’m supporting our local grocery store. I find that decluttering has made me more aware of purchasing items. Thank you Dawn for your great videos. I absolutely love them. 😊

Thanks Dawn for another great video. My family of 4, we are extremely minimal. We have free space in our wardrobe, linen closet, kitchen cupboards. It is a great way to live. It only takes me about 1 hour to completely clean our 4 bedroom house. That’s everything including bathroom. My young children are learning from us but the advertising still gets to them sometimes. We’ve been minimal for about 5 years, there is only 1 thing in all that time I regret decluttering. It was a Christmas craft that my eldest made in kindy. After a few years I thought I’d let it go. But then his younger brother made the same craft in kindy and I wish I’d had them both together. Solution - I got my eldest to make another. Not exactly the same but still from a snapshot of his childhood and a lesson learnt by me that it’s ok to hold onto a few sentimental items that our kids have made. It’s all a learning process. But the amount of things I have decluttered and never thought of again, and also stopped buying so much, it’s all so worth it. 😊

I think this video gave me the permission I needed to let go of a very nice pair of designer high heels I’ve been holding onto just because I felt like I “should” have a pair of black high heels. I have less than ten pairs of shoes, so I’m not really excessive in that area. But in reality, I’ve been to a wedding, a funeral, and through the holidays in the past six months. Plus, we go to church regularly and I’ve literally never worn them. (Actually, I put them on to go to the funeral and immediately took them off and chose something else because they are uncomfortable.) My daughter is in her school chorus and they wear black dress shoes, so I’ll see if she can use them and if not I’ll pass them on to a thrift store.

I love the hundred dollar budget concept. I’ve heard some people suggest that if it’s under 20 dollars, get rid of it because it’s “only” 20 dollars. But as someone who has to live very frugally, I’ve spent less than 20 dollars on most of my possessions outside of furniture and appliances, so 20 dollars being a per-item budget is intimidating and just feels unrealistic

Your comment really touched my heart. Of course keep what is useful and precious to you, and makes you happy. Decluttering is for those who have too much stuff not being used, that is cluttering up closets, storage units, rooms, that the owner wants to NOT have their loved ones have to take care of when they pass. Your ashamed comment brought tears to my eyes. Please forgive yourself, the past is the past. We all grow and learn and change each decade of our lives. This came at the perfect time. Thank you. Now….declutter. It’s also funny about the Ice cream scoop and creating perfect round ice cream scoops. I live off grid in Australia. People probably already think I live minimally but prior to our move, I was a hoarder. I halved what I owned to make the move from a 4 bedroom home with granny flat to a one bedroom home that is 10.5 meters by 5.5 mtr home. So I still “look like” a hoarder. After 7 years of living with less and less, some days even electricity or water, we have had to learn to be frugal, thrifty and clever with what we do have available, or from the tip 😂 Love your videos over the years. They have been so helpful to me. I am very grateful to you. 🙏

My only suggestion about the borrowing is,if you have to borrow something repeatedly and it’s not from your close relative, then just buy it. As the person who owns the large thirty cup coffee urn, large electric roaster, folding tables,etc.,etc.,etc., it gets old to have to shlep up to my attic or down to my basement to get these items, then stand perched while I wait for the item to get picked up or even have been asked to drop it off! (I’m getting to the point where it might just go in my next yard sale,oh well)🤷🏼‍♀️

I box up anything I'm not sure about and leave it for a while - if I can't find something else to substitute for it, or the substitute doesn't work, then I can fish it back out of the box. And if I do make a mistake, I can usually find a replacement in a charity shop (thrift store). And give yourself permission to keep stuff that you don't use that often but do find hard to substitute when you do need it. For example, I need to serve icecream maybe a dozen times a year. Yes, I can serve icecream with a spoon, but I find it really painful on my hands. So I'm happy to make space for the scoop in my drawer so serving icecream doesn't have to be really painful. But I've been happy to get rid of the little icecream dishes and use ordinary bowls instead, because that substitute works just fine.

Dawn! I had what I think is an insightful thought after watching this video. I realized there is something new I like to have "just in case": EMPTY SPACE! My cupboard of cups and dishes is now almost half empty. I leave it that way. It actually makes me happy. And I look at that space where glasses used to be (before we broke them all), and I think that space is there "just in case" we find glasses we really like, but in the meantime my husband and I just use the kids' plastic cups contently, and I don't know if we even need glasses because we are living without just fine. I now leave empty space in my food cupboards too, instead of packing them full AND letting the food spill out onto countertops and into other spaces. I used to have a bunch of "just in case" ingredients that I was waiting for the perfect moments to use. Now I keep our staples and leave empty space between. I buy other ingredients only when I need them. I love having that empty space there because I love being able to get to my food easier without having to pull everything out of the cupboard and put everything back. But the empty space also serves a "just in case" purpose. If I host a big family dinner I need to buy a bunch of food for, I have space where I can put that food away for a few days instead of it sitting on the countertop. If family comes to stay with us, and they happen to buy food while they are here, now there is space to out that food away instead of it living on the countertop. The empty spaces are serving me better than the "just in case" food did! In my kids' rooms, we have cut back on clothes a lot, and their dresser drawers stay half-empty now. I did not feel the need to fill those spaces, and guess what? They also served a "just in case" purpose. We ended up having a family member unexpectedly need to live with us while in our small house for a few months while healing from a surgery, and I was able to comfortably move all my daughter's clothes into the empty spaces in my boys' dresser when we made her room available to our family member. Altogether giving up one of the three rooms in our house has not really been uncomfortable, which I could not have imagined a little over a year ago before I discovered your videos. I am so glad I have been making more room throughout parts of my home "just in case," even though I didn't fully know at the time that was what I was doing, lol. I can think of more examples of empty spaces I've been leaving around my house and how they were temporarily useful during the holidays, family visits, or during a project I needed to do, but I've already been long winded enough. I was just feeling very passionate about this concept, though in fact I have technically been passionate about it for months now, I just hadn't articulated it in these terms before.

My family has struggled with this for generations. My grandpa grew up in the Great Depression and learned to hoard everything. My grandma on my other parent’s side would also hoard, just like her mom, and she even had a drawer of old plastic deli meat and yogurt containers. There are a number of items that I do not use very often such as a pizza cutter and a noodle maker and a few other things but what I have found is to have a small container on one of the shelves in the cupboards and everything that I use once in awhile, including an ice cream scoop, and the guard for my stand mixer are housed there and not taking up space in my everyday drawers in the kitchen. The funny thing about ice cream scoops is that we never had one growing up, we just used a huge serving spoon to dig into the ice cream bucket! And we never had ice cream bowls, but my mother had fruit nappies which also could be used for occasional ice cream treats.

As soon as you mentioned the butter bell I knew I had to comment. I bought one and couldn’t believe it when I found my butter was MOLDY! I didn’t even know butter could do that, GROSS! So I got rid of it. A few years later I was looking to replace our plastic butter dish with something nicer and when talking to my mom she brought up a butter bell. I told her I was familiar with them. Then she told me she tried one and her butter molded! Glad to know it was t just me. We now keep a small glass bowl of (salted) butter with a lid on the counter, and a typical rectangular butter dish in the frig with unsalted that is more for cooking, putting in pasta, or a pan, etc. We also made it clear that if you finish the butter in either dish that it needs to be washed before you put new butter in.

Ok, let's talk about my "just in case" experience. When I retired in 2007, I packed up all my work clothes, nice slacks, blouses, jackets, etc. ( I don't wear dresses/skirts.) I was planning on a casual/jean type retirement. A week later, my aunt passed away. Thank goodness I still had those bags of clothes. I don't have an "off the rack" body and trying to replace them would have cost quite a bit with getting appropriate clothes purchased and altered. If I could even find someone to do the alterations in time. So, I keep 2 funeral outfits in my size in the closet at all times. You just never know. Bonus: you can also wear them out to dinner if you get invited to a nice restaurant for Thanksgiving by your nephew. 🙂

I’m going to jump in here with my favourite ice cream which is Strawberry cheesecake. 😋 As for decluttering and minimalism my husband and I have always enjoyed a clutter free home. Not always doable when we were raising our four children. The number of transfers we had over the years, made it necessary to offload all the unnecessary items before we moved on. And now that we are retired decluttering continues to be an ongoing process. There’s this sense of relief once we make the trip to Value Village and drop our items off. And as silly as it sounds I will go into the spaces I’ve reorganized and I get this sense of a “feel good moment.” And thank you so much Dawn for all your sensible and practical advice, which makes me a more intentional shopper. ❤

Just as I thought I had watched your videos to death and there was nothing more you could teach me about decluttering. Think I will use the ice cream idea if I help others to declutter, and the budget idea is awesome! Thank you Dawn! ❤ X

I love aldi's expensive ice cream with the black label, the chocolate and I like it hard, but I also don't mind mixing regular chocolate ice cream to make it kind of shake/malt like.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought things I already own because I can’t find it, so if I occasionally rebuy something I’ve decluttered, I’m probably still ahead of the game because now I can find the things I need.

Literally just talked myself out of a bowl of ice cream but I couldn't let Dawn eat it by herself 🤣 I don't know that I've ever turned down a bowl of ice cream but if I were buying for myself, it would be Blue Bell chocolate, homemade vanilla or cookie two-step 😋 and I've never had to debate about getting rid of my ice cream scoop as it's a permanent fixture in our home 🤣

~ SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND~ when one borrows an item, one is graciously being loaned it from a person who DOES house and maintain these items, be they kitchenware, gardening tools, picnic blankets, folding chairs, a baseball and glove, etc. And when you are trying to be minimal, the chances you will need to rely on certain people around you for this goes up. So...don't forget good etiquette in that regard! It will support good relationships as well as maintain your ability to borrow needful things. Try not to frequently borrow over and over from the same person if possible. Try not to ask to borrow an item they are likely to need themselves at the same time, as some people were socialized to have difficulty saying "no" until they resent you enough to be rude or avoid you. Use common sense. Don't ask to borrow folding chairs when they are also about to host a holiday, for example. Better to request that one of your guests bring folding chairs. Apply that line of thought to everything. Do not borrow a beach umbrella for a couple weeks of hot summer weather. Be sure to return the items promptly and in good condition. That goes without saying, right? But many people, including those who would say "oh, of course!!" ....don't actually do that. I know one committed declutterer who has a beautiful, clean, semi-minimalist home. Everyone admires her for it....and absolutely no one will lend her anything. They make excuses and apologies. This is because she begs for the item, Uses it for the occasion or need, doesn't return it right away, quickly forgets she borrowed it and then throws it in the trash or gives it away to someone else, often within a month! If you loan her something, there is a 50% chance of you will never see it again. If she is busy or stressed (it's the holidays, for example) the chances are higher that she will throw it out She has literally thrown away costly items, even kitchen items that were family heirlooms, and always insists she has returned them already, or forgets that she borrowed them at all. DO NOT BE THAT WOMAN. Make notes of what items you borrow, Post it where you can see it, and return items within days of when you used them, clean and in good condition. If an item is damaged, replace it or ask where they would like it to be cleaned/repaired and insist on paying for that, no matter how polite the lender is about saying "it's fine." And if you borrow semi-regularly with the same person, or if you borrow a really important item that would have been expensive to buy or rent, be sure to provide some perk in addition to the verbal or written thank you they are owed (a baked good they like, a five dollar gift card for coffee, etc) This is important ***especially*** if you have decluttered to the point that you never have much that your neighbors, friends or relatives need to borrow. Enjoy your cleaner, less stressful home while also making the people around you whom you can you rely on in the lurch, feel appreciated! It's a win-win.

Oh, that's so true. Wish that our neighbor who banged at the door at 6 a.m. to borrow a can opener (no hello's, excuses but "we're so hungryyyy") would read this. But she wouldn't. Because pigs can't read.

Mint chocolate chip, preferably with the massive chunks of chocolate. But I put it in a tall cup with a little bit of milk. Everyone thinks I'm crazy, but it's the best way to eat ice cream. 🤷‍♀
