Loving your game and it's art style! For your shadow problem - because you're already using illustrator - you should be able to import your vector art into Blender, and extrude it to make the majority of those invisible assets. The more complex shapes might need a few edge loops and subdivisions - but I believe in you ;)

Don't know much about game design, but it looks like you would start the shadow at the bottom-top right corner of the object. So you might have to build the objects off that point, and create a hit box using negatives. This probably sounds like jibberish, but this is the best I can do to explain it.

Could you put in an lightmap static object, bake the lights, remove the object and still have a baked shadow?
@isto_inc
@isto_inc 4 жыл бұрын
zBones762 unfortunately, baked lighting is static. In the future we’re going to add lots of moving lights into the game, so this approach wouldn’t work for our game. Baked lighting looks SO good but it just doesn’t make sense for us sadly :(
@zBones762
@zBones762 4 жыл бұрын
@@isto_inc Maybe you could use Mixed lighting, static those objects you know won't move, then use real time on everything else you expect to move. Dialing in the settings to the scene can be tough though.

Atrio sounds like a cool concept. Not sure about the animals-as-machine-parts thing. There could be a story angle that salvages it though. Btw, I'd be interested to know how you approach storytelling in your games.

Truby seems to have a background in screenwriting for films. Does the book touch upon video games? Video games seem to me like a unique storytelling medium and I'm not sure how extensively techniques from other media translate. I'll be waiting for that devlog on story. :)

Αστέριος Χαρδαλιάς the book does not talk about video games and game story is definitely different. However, his fundamentals carry well through any medium. We’ve certainly had to adapt quite a bit but if your foundation isn’t strong, no story, regardless of how it’s told will be compelling

simple 3d objects for shadows would work until you try to do self shadowing with it (you'll get mistmaches between 3d object and 2d sprite if sprite is complex enough), so it kinda work but only for simple games, not complex custom tile sandboxes. for sorting problems there is one solution - SV_DEPTH output, but you should make depthmap for sprite somehow (and also custom shaders)

Okay so as your no.1 favourite fan I feel obligated to say something positive and encouraging. what can I do? I didn't give myself this position, you did. This is on you bro. So firstly, have you tried the built-in unity tilemap? THey've got a sweet auto sorting feature and you get the exact effect you're looking for with moving behind objects. It's pretty sweet. I tried it once then I scrapped the project cos it was a crap game. The other option you've highlighted yourself - 3d it up. So here's the thing, i think you're thinking that 3d art is much harder than you think. Seriously, for what you're trying to achieve you can do that so simple. It's just a case of uv a cube with your existing artwork. Happily can show you what I mean if you want... Love the workarounds you've come up with though! Next video pls.
@isto_inc
@isto_inc 4 жыл бұрын
Blackout Gaming good to have you back #1 fan :) we have tried tile map! The only issue with tile map is that it’s perfectly flat, so you miss out on the 3d features (you’ll see in the coming videos that we use 3D lights pretty heavily) And as for 3D, you’re right. I started playing around with magica voxel last month. There’s some real potential there (that’s many videos into the future until we catch up.... so you’ll just have to stay tuned)
@BlackoutGamingChannel
@BlackoutGamingChannel 4 жыл бұрын
@@isto_inc i've tried magica voxel once but i didn't really like it. I'd recommend blender. That is unless you're getting all you need from magica. You'll probably get more control from blender at a lower vertex count. I think i remember magica literally making making every block and UVing every surface, even flat ones, and possibly even internal ones (might be wrong on the latter). But based on what you've shown so far I tihnk 3d is the way forward. it sounds like you've got it all in hand, and im quite confident that you're smart enough to find the answers to the things you don't know, and if you need pointing in the right direction with blender you're welcome to ask :) Looking forward to the next video! :)
@isto_inc

Blackout Gaming that’s really good to know! I went for it because voxels fit our aesthetic and it’s SUPER easy to learn. I picked it up in an afternoon. But we’ve tabled it to focus on other things. We will look at it in the future and I’ll keep your advise in mind :)

First of all ai love the art style but for the problems with your shadows I would probably recommend you to just use simple 3D boxes UV unwrap them and use your 2D art as a texture. You could even project the texture from your game camera onto the boxes and use your already existing sprites.
@isto_inc
@isto_inc 4 жыл бұрын
Basil Egger it’s true, we actually started with this approach, but in the coming videos you’ll see we start to add some objects that aren’t just boxes and had to scrap this approach. As I start to understand the constraints more, I learn to work around it. (Slightly vague response, but I’m trying not to reveal too much until the next video)

If you have all three sides of the object together, can't you write an add-on for say Blender and let it do the job of creating simple 3D object for you? Sure it's an extra step and probably you'd have to name all layers correctly in Illustrator and stuff but... you know... shadows.
@isto_inc
@isto_inc 4 жыл бұрын
Gegenton you certainly could. At the time (sept 2018) we were really hoping to add a lot more complex shapes and objects into the game, and that was sort of the breaking point where we said “UGH we gotta table this feature for now until we have a better understanding of the game”. 2 ish years later I can reflect back and see how we could have used blender and cubes... but the game has really evolved and changed. Scrapping shadows has let me do some really creative stuff quickly. In the coming videos you’ll see!

Why don’t you just use the Y coordinates and sort the layers based on the players and the objects y, if the player is above the bottom of the object in the Y axis then he should be behind.
@isto_inc
@isto_inc 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately this only works if the game is in 2d (pretending to be 3d). It's a bit hard to explain over text, but essentially you're moving in both the x and y coordinates so its not so simple as sorting based on the y. I WISH though :(

I'm a bit confused how making the objects 3d is "out of the budget"... you don't exactly need to entirely model the objects and buildings with all their details. You already made the sides of the object before you skewed them to be isometric.... just make a 3d box and use those as textures? I'm not sure about Unity, but I know that other engines absolutely can use an isometric camera instead of one with perspective. If it's a stylistic choice, cool. But based on all your issues, it seems like using 2.5d for ALL these objects (not just some) is a real pain. especially when the game is technically 3D anyway, just with camera trickery. You can absolutely do 2.5d with 3D objects, using similar camera tricks.
@isto_inc
@isto_inc 3 жыл бұрын
Ya hindsight is 20/20. At the time I was very comfortable with 2d art, and had no modeling experience. The 2.5d is an HUGE pain as you’ve mentioned and I do partially wish I had gone with 3d. However, achieving a unique art style is incredibly important, and I do find it’s a big stylistic difference between 3d and 2d. Despite it being a huge pain, it is distinct. So at least we have that haha
@SunSailor
@SunSailor 4 жыл бұрын
Don't get, why you won't simply use flat shaded 3D cubes and use the sprites as textures on them. That shouldn't be too hard for anyone able to use Unity and saves you virtually all issues you had here and before.
@isto_inc

We toyed with this idea. I was originally going to be creating a lot of complicated buildings with complicated shapes. Things ended up changing and now i wish i had invested into 3d cubes as you mentioned.

you do realize there are plenty of free 2D game engines that does isometric better than unity right? since in them you are not faking isometric in a 3D engine. Isometric tileview comes built in with Godot and I think it does not fake it over 3D world. I prefer Heaps (Haxe) over other Engines because Haxe is alot like javascript and as a JS developer it comes naturally to me. But People seem to like Godot. Your content is fun to watch though I just don't get it why you are using Unity.
@isto_inc
@isto_inc 4 жыл бұрын
Masood Ahmed a couple of reasons. We are using 3D specifically because of the 3D lighting system. There’s more flexibility with what you can do. You’ll see in later videos that We’re also taking advantage of the 3D physics. The last (and probably most important) is that Kyle and I are most familiar with unity. Learning a new engine is a lot of work, and since this is our full time job, not something we’re willing to risk. We both had 4+ years experience in unity prior to the game!
