Hello everyone. Here's the highlight reel of my latest step by step drum tuning lesson available to stream at www.kennysharretts.com It's a great lesson on getting "3 TOM TUNING PROFILES FOR A 1 UP 2 DOWN KIT feat THE KENNY ARONOFF SPECIAL". The full lesson includes two of the tuning profiles I used while being a drum tech for Kenny Aronoff.
To help support my channel, please stream the full step-by-step drum tuning lesson at www.kennysharretts.com/ppv-on...
In this YT version, I demo/discuss two of the tuning profiles I used with Kenny, as well as another great tuning profile I've used as a touring drum tech for artists such as Stevie Wonder, Rihanna, Dead & Co., & Janet Jackson. In addition, I discuss some of the challenges drummers face when trying to find a great set of intervals for a 1 up, 2 down setup. Like " my 16" floor tom won't go much lower than my 14" floor", or "my 12" or 13" tom doesn't sound good tuned high". Learn three GREAT sets of tuning intervals I've used as a touring drum tech for artists such as Stevie Wonder, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Dead & Co. & of course KENNY ARONOFF! Learn step by step how to get them at www.kennysharretts.com

It's sounds like "Call to the Post". Yeah! I played the tri-toms (tenor drums) in high school marching band. Our drum cadence had a tri-tom break where we played that. It was cool! Even now, I tune a 5-piece kit like that. 12 B flat, 14 G, and 16 E flat. When I add an 18 it gets a B flat. But my 10, on the upper end, gets a D flat. The separation of pitches that you talk about are all present throughout a 7-piece setup. I learned and confirmed it all from you, Kenny. I experiment and found what I like. Thank you always!

Kenny, whatta great video & presentation. You are addressing exactly what I seek in my Kit. I'm a 71 yo recreational drummer, who resurrected playing after 50 years [1969]. Love that Big Rock Sound, Big Drum Sounds. You mention Aronoff, I read his Book which was great. This Lesson is Priceless. So glad i stumbled on This Video. How beautiful the tree tom perfect 4th tuning interval indeed is Kenny 🙏👍👌👏 I know now the reason for which my personal preference it is to mostly have them a perfect fourth apart. There's so much more definition while at the sane time they harmonising much clearer 🙏👍👌 Mind you I've got a lot of influence from using timpani in orchestral ensembles, still though, it does sound so much more of a wider range and it pleases ones ear. 🙏👍👌 Thank you ever so much Kenny, your hard work and talent in drum tuning it's certainly of a great help to many of us BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!! 🙏 👍 👌 👏 🎶 🥁😉

Man that last one(Kenny Aronoff "Arena Style") harmonized with the snare so well. Maybe a bit better than the previous one. As it sounded(to my ears) like the Snare was a G but the toms slid up to be right on the F A and C. Which made it great for songs in the Key of F. I'm not a drummer myself, but your vids are easy to watch and learn from. Allowing me to better communicate with drummers I play and work with.

Hey from Australia Kenny! Could you do a video about jazz/big band style tom tuning? A lot of those drummers would use 12" or 13" rack toms and 14" or 16" and really tune them up so they didn't sound as thuddy. Some of the older funk drummers from the 60's used this tuning as well. It would be cool if you did a video on that as I love that sound!! Also I use the minor 3rd tuning on my DW Performance Kit which I learnt from you, Absolutely love it!! Keep up the good work

I found that I like the top head tighter tuning better for recording. Especially for lower pitched tuning. 12 inch tom tuned to A#, 14 inch floor F, and 16 inch floor C. Using tunebot settings for minimum resonance, all the toms still have a nice sustain, but controlled and great for recording.

@KennySharretts
@KennySharretts 2 жыл бұрын
Maaaann I have a bunch of them. Some are discussed right here on this channel. A major 3rd between the 10" & 12" with a 4th(if you want your racks tuned lower), or a 5th (If you want the racks higher) are good starting points. It really depends on what you are looking for tone wise as well it depends on what works for kit within that tone vision. Always remember I offer 1 on 1 online lessons where I can help you dial in the perfect tuning profile for your kit. They are very effective at putting great tuning skills right in your hands. I also have step by step lessons at Kennysharretts.com that will help you be able to better use interval tuning. Thanks for watching, and for commenting.

Hi Kenny, dumb question if you don't mind, can you please clarify when tuning in '4ths' do you always count the first note as '1' for example: my 14"tom Reso head is tuned to A#, should therefore the batter be G? (4 steps down). Same goes with the toms themselves, would the 16" Floor need to be G Reso and down to E for the batter and finally the 18" floor Reso E, Batter down to C#? Would much appreciate your advice here.
@KennySharretts
@KennySharretts 2 жыл бұрын
It’s not a dumb question at all. To keep it straightforward I will say that a perfect 4th is created by the 1st and 4 tone of a major scale. 2 whole steps and one half step OR 5 half steps. So if your Tom Reso is an A# (or for our situation it’s technically a Bflat ) your batter would an F. If you want a lesson in basic music theory for your drum needs book a private drum tuning lesson at www.kennysharretts.com . That way for the same price as a GC Drum lesson teaching you how to play “Highway To Hell” you will learn some basic music theory for drums while applying it to your drums. Hence a music theory lesson, AND the drum sound you want. Thank you for watching, and commenting.

@KennySharretts

I don’t remember the pitches but the interval is most likely a whole step between the heads. If it’s my 20” kick, the reso is a whole step lower than the batter. If it’s my 22” kick it’s the exact opposite. Thanks you for watching, and commenting ✊🏻

Ken in the major triad tuning question. 1 iii V => 16” 14” 12”. So 1 to iii is major == 4 half steps == E; iii to V is minor == 3 half steps == F#. Not sure if im correct to understand why the 12” is tuned to E. Great lesson 👌

Hi Ron. Thank you so much for the kind words, and for watching. My pleasure to share. To find out all the tunings, and their settings for TB and DD please stream the lesson at www.kennysharretts.com 🤗It's only $29.99 and it's a GREAT lesson in drum tuning for any 3 tom setup. PLUS it helps support my YT channel. For less than the price of a GC Drum lesson to teach a kid how to play "Highway To Hell" you learn how to get 3 killer floor tom tunings as taught to you by a drum tech for the Grateful Dead, AND support my channel. I hope this feels win/win to you because that was my goal. 😀Again thank you for watching, and commenting.

Listen with headphones, and I think you will find they have tons of sustain, tone, and body. Each drum has a 1/2 to 3/4 Moon gel on it to focus the attack just a touch. Nothing more. So overly muffled is absolutely not going on here. Especially for recording drums that settle perfectly into the tracks I'm hired to record. In my little studio, the touch of gel makes it perfect. Thanks for watching.

@@KennySharretts You're supposed to drop the moon gel after that one... you know, like dropping the sticks. Or you could drop a drum key. Or a drum key wrapped in moon gel..... Bam suckkka lol
