The fabric I use is Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton Fabric. It is very good quality neat even weave (plain weave) cotton fabric with a variety of colors. The price range is around $5 ~ $7 per yard (the cheapest, safe, and good website as far as I know, I ordered my fabrics from this website).

I'm confused - when doing split stitch with 1 strand, do you still bring the needle down through the middle of the 1 strand? How do you split 1 strand?

Yes, you still need to bring the needle down through the 1 strand floss. So technically you need the size 9 (or 8) embroidery needle.
