Three way switching with Sonoff/Tasmota/Home Assistant
This has been by far the most requested topic, so here you go!

I found a couple short videos that I think explain 3 and 4 way switches pretty well.

4-way switch: • Four-way Switches & Ho...
You need one Sonoff for each switch you want to replace.

One Sonoff will be connected to the lights. The others will just be mqtt buttons.
The real 3-way switch work is done with an automation in Home Assistant.

Another great Tutorial for which I thank you! Just a small think I noticed idk if someone else already commented about it. But this might lead to a "Boom" if someone does not now or not paying attention. But you're saying to "set the Multi-meter to AC Voltage Detection" but at the same time in the image of the multi-meter you're highlighting(with the red circle) the DC part of the Multi-meter :). Anyways not a big deal. Happy new Year! :)

As I think someone else pointed out, if the wifi goes down, you only have one working switch. I made a 1/2 way solution to this problem by still wiring all of the switches to the light. I am using sonoff glass panel wall switches. It is a 1/2 way solution because the three switches are not networked in the mechanical wiring sense, but by still wiring them to the light, each switch can still independently control the light, whatever the state of the wifi. I have then run ewelink scenes to create the digital effect as you have in HASS, which tell each switch how to behave if another switch is turned on or off, thus creating a 3 or more way switching scenario. Works a treat!!! So then I went out a spent some reasonable coin on wall switches for my entire house. Turns out that the ewelink app, although not written in any documentation, can only operate 21 scenes at a time!!!! I need more like 60 to cover all my 3 way switches in the house. So it is time to dust of the Pi and get into home assistant i guess... Great vids by the way, have learnt a lot from you.
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 6 жыл бұрын
I had no idea there was a limit on the eWelink app! Sorry you found that out the hard way but thanks for letting us know! Did you have to run new wiring to get all your switches each connected to the lights? I hope, eventually, you'll be glad you decided to fire up Home Assistant. There's an almost endless number of cool smart-home things you can do with that as your hub. There's no limit to the number of devices you can connect! I'll be doing a video on another way to do 3-way switching soon. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks. So many projects, so little time!
@jackofmosttrades.masterofsome
@jackofmosttrades.masterofsome 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah bummer to find out the hard way. I have challenged them and received a reply confirming that 20 scenes are the max number. I have asked them where it is documented, and if they can increase this limit.....I will post here the answer if that is ok. I did need to alter my wiring in a few places, but mainly to add a negative wire. I built my house so I know what is in the wall and can easily run wires through the conduit installed in the walls. Thinking about it today, I will experiment with ITFFF before I flash the sonoffs and use HASS. I don't need all the additional ability for HASS, just three or more way switches, and a few master scene swithes for different lighting moods - which incidentally I am also activating with powered sonoff wall switches not connected to any device, only running scenes. My wife does not like Alexa, or using her phone to controll the lights.....

So I did two things. Pulled out the Pi, and killed two micro sd cards trying to flash HASS. Ever heard of this happening before. Basically right at the end of the flashing process, I get a message telling me that the process has not been successful......Ever heard of this before? And set my scenes up on IFTTT, which works ok all be it with a small lag of a second or two. Unfortunately, for some reason, IFTTT seems to apply some sort of ownership rule to the last scene run on a particular switch. This means that when I try to activate a 3 way switch scenario, it wont work......back to head scratching, but if you have advice on the flashing of HASS it would be much appreciated as I believe this will be my best route.

I had the ghost switching issue in just one sonoff out of my entire setup, so I have been lucky. Solved it with just a 4.7K ohm resistor between 3.3 v and GPIO pin. The 3 way switch i solved by mounting a 220V relay on the light fixture, switch is then switched on and off by my light switches. When the relay is switched on and off it will switch the sonoff on the gpio pin. The sonoff is connected to the power all the time. This way I only have to use one sonoff instead of 3 for a 3 way switch 😊

Nice video! Just today I was wondering how I could solve a "problem" with my old z-wave controlled toggle/blade style switches (Intermatic HA 20) not working with LEDs in 3-way mode. There are less options for these older style toggle switches. This may just be the solution. I would simply use the existing z-wave switch, which I believe still works with LED when not in 3-way mode, and would use other relays (likely sonoff) to have the switches on travelers just send something to openhab to indicate they've been toggled. BRAVO!

First of all thank you! I am getting into home automation (low cost in mind) and you have the best tutorials about using Sonoffs for automations specially to use with a common rockers switch’s. My question is can I use the rocker switch instead of your fancy button for this project? I mean for this 3 ways light setup?
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad it's been helpful to you. Yes you can use a rocker switch instead of the push button. Skip the part where you change the switchmode in the Console, and the sonoffs should do what you want with a rocker switch. You shouldn't have to change the automation in HA. I think it'll work as is. Let me know if it doesn't work. I'm sure it will work, just not sure if I've missed anything since I didn't do it that way myself. Good Luck!

You can also use this configuration for the 3-way switch (same result, same design). family_room_lights is the "load" switch that actually turns the load on and off and the other one (the "_remote" switch) is the other one. You can add as many "_remote" Sonoffs as you want by just adding them to the trigger section. The trick is that if you don't provide a "from" and "to" HA will trigger on any change to the remote switch(es). - alias: Family room lights 3-way switch trigger: platform: state entity_id: - switch.family_room_lights_remote_1 action: service: homeassistant.toggle entity_id: - switch.family_room_lights

Rather than using the "toggle" feature, you should use a Off / On operation. I have 2 active sonoffs controlling 2 areas of my basement. With the app, I can select either one to be on or off. I have a Sonoff at the top of the stairs, with no light connected, but controlling these other 2 sonoffs. This way, if one is on and the other off, it will turn both on or both off. With a toggle feature, it would switch the status of both to the opposite condition. . Just something to consider for anyone controlling multiple sonoffs or future expansion. I would love to use the 3 button touch panel at the top of the stairs to control both areas, or each area of my basement, but these switches do NOT fit in the standard North American metal single gang electrical box. ( Too Wide, and danger of screw terminals touching the box). Would love if they made the touch swith the proper size. I'm just using the standard f/w and ewlink.

Question? I currently have a 10 or so zigbee switches, and I got zigbee (vs zwave) because it was more open and it didn't clog up IP addresses. I like how easy they are to connect (no IP). It seems like if I'm gonna go down the home assistant road, and I want to DIY a lot of stuff cheaply (a necessity, if I'm honest with myself), then I need to get over not wanting to use WiFi for home automation- is that the consensus? WiFi suposedly doesn't like so many devices - that seems weird. I'm a little dismayed at the 3-way switch solution presented here, because it seems like if my wifi is down, or my home assistant RasPi is down, I have switches that don't function. (the master of the 2 switches, will it still work, or do I have zero switches that control the light/). Lastly, I note that you pressed it with your fingers (which you could have done before the upgrade) so - can i still use Alexa? (or some voice triggering). (To recap all 3: Get over anti-WiFi bias? Will at least 1 switch work with no connection to Home Assistant? Alexa control?).

In my house I have 90% 3 and 4 ways switches. The solution I found was in the light lamps ( If there is space). Normally on the lamp we have 220v (EU) from the switches and negative line. Disconnect these two lines from the light and connect to a small 220v relay. The contacts from the relay connect to pin GND and D14 Of the sonoff. Then from the junction box I pull a wire 220v directly to the sonoff input (in the lamp) and from the sonoff to the light. Flashed the sonoff with tasmot. So each time I switch on or off, the relay switch’s on and off and toggles the sonoff. In Portugal the junction boxes are small and the sonoff don’t fit inside.

There’s a slightly easier method that can be setup through the tasmota console. All that’s required is to map the gpio14 switch on both transmitting sonoffs to the receiving Sonoff. Open console on the two transmitting and enter “switchtopic nameofrecevingsonoff” Save and you’re done! As a bit of a bonus for controlling another switch the button can also be mapped to another sonoff. This time using “buttontopic nameofrecevingsonoff”

ooh, that's a cool solution. So you're going to use a current sensor that will then report back to HA when the lights are on or off? That's genius! That would be useful for a lot of other things too. I'd love to hear how you did it when you've got it worked out.

Can you explain why you have to use 3 Sonoff's to do this? I am quite new at this, I was trying to do this with two T1 switches, but first I want to understand why you are using three. Thanks! :) Great videos by the way, I am learning so much and have set my system up based on all I am learning from your videos!!

@DrZzs 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave! I used 3 only because the hallway I was installing these in had 3 switch locations. The concept is the same with just 2. One is connected directly to the lights, the other is only sending MQTT message to trigger the first light. You could do the same thing with T1's.
@cysix4939
@cysix4939 6 жыл бұрын
The only problem with a pure software solution is that if either your wifi, MQTT, or HA are down, you have multiple dead switches in the setup. Probably not a huge deal, but a potential annoyance until things are back up and running. Existing Z-wave solutions from companies like Levitron make use of the traveller wire to sync the switches in 3-way and multi-way scenarios. I haven't tried this, but I'm thinking you could use a single Sonoff is in your setup, and do something similar. I'm thinking that you could use the traveller to loop the GPIO signal through the existing switches. Since it's active low it should work and not matter that we're dealing with such a low voltage. Again thanks for the really well put together video. I'll follow up if I get something interesting working.

I believe you will need one additional wire to loop the GPIO signal around and back to main sonoff. so most likely one sonoff will not work. Unless you are planning to use neutral wire as both normal neutral function and pass GPIO signal back to sonoff and i am sure you can't mix neutral and GPIO together. And I believe the way DrZzs has wired the sonoff switches, at least main switch work normal in case of server is down.

Here is the circuit I was thinking of... I bench tested it and it works fine. It doesn't work in the specific case DrZzs showed in his video; but, will work in many other multi-way switch situations, including virtually every one I have in my house. The basic requirement is that you have available power in the same box as your light/load lead. This is often, but not always the case. In some situations you may need to "borrow" power from an adjacent circuit in the box. With today's low power LED lighting, that shouldn't be an issue. www.dropbox.com/s/h94truyd6d9c8w3/2018-01-08%2014.14.01.jpg?dl=0

I used the xiaomi hub. two xiaomi wireless buttons. on at each end of the hallway mounted on the wall just like any normal switch would. then inside home assistant, I just made each button a light toggle. if the light is on, they will turn it off and vice versa. the cool part about these buttons is that they support ( Click, press, and double click) and therefore I can call any service in, home assistant. they cost a little bit more than a sonoff would. and they require you to have either wifi bulbs or a wifi relay controlling the circuit. in my case, I have Yeelight in most of the house, and Philips hue in the Home theatre

Not that I know about. That would be an interesting DIY project. It might be possible to get inside the fan, figure out how the speed variation happens and then decided how you could smarten it up. It might be something you could do with a multiple relay set-up. I haven't ever messed with the speed control on a fan, so I'm not much help. But it would be fun to figure out.

Is the Tasmota just your preferred firmware because it works with HA? Or does the stock sonoff firmware lack the functionality for the physical switching?
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, and sorta yes. I have become quite fond of Tasmota. Connecting to Home Assistant is probably paramount, but it is also really versatile and easy to use for a non-coder guy like me. And, it does allow more switching options than the stock firmware. Tasmota lets you setup the other GPIO pins on the sonoff to act as switches or for other functions (sensors, LEDs, and more). With the stock firmware, you could just connect a switch to the poles of the existing on-board button so you could hide the sonoff and have some nicer looking button on the wall plate. But you can't change the function of the button at all, you press it and it toggles the state of the relay, that's it. So you couldn't use a rocker switch (with Tasmota you can use a rocker or a button). And with the stock firmware you've got 3 extra GPIO pins just flapping in the breeze doing nothing. Hope that helps. Thanks!

Thanks for your videos. They got me started with HA and home automation. Now I am hooked and it is your fault, so it is your responsibility to help me! 😀 Also, you have beautiful daughters, congrats. Now to the serious stuff, you just helped me with an issue I have, a living room light fixture that has the switches in the attic... What the heck! I can fix them using your idea.(thanks again) But I have a question, the two wires you connect from the Sonoff to the button, where are they in the Sonoff? Since I don't have a Sonoff now would they fit inside the plate box with the normal switches?If not, where can we get your fancy chrome buttons? Thank you
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 6 жыл бұрын
Ha! I've been accused of worse :) Happy to help! Those wires from the sonoff to the switch are just small gauge low voltage wires. I've even used old telephone cord since no one uses telephone cord for anything anymore. They don't come with the sonoff, you have to add them yourself after flashing (some soldering involved). Can you diagram out what you've got and what you're planning? That'll help me help you. Are you thinking of running the wires from the sonoff (that go to the chrome button) down to a place on the wall somewhere? If those wires get very long you could have problems with voltage drop. I haven't tested to see how long they can be before it causes a problem.

Thanks for the prompt answer... You're good! My setup is technically easier than yours. I am thinking of using 2 sonoffs on the switches and a third connected to straight to the light. So,, one one switches any of the switches the sonoff connected to the light switch state. So, the two wires that you connect to the button, they must be connected to gates that switch the state of the son off, what are these gates. Thanks again.
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 6 жыл бұрын
they are connected to push buttons. The sonoffs are all connected to 120v power, but only one of them is connected to the lights. They all have push buttons connected to GPIO-14 and ground. When the push button on the sonoff connected to the lights is pressed it toggles the lights. When the pushbutton on either of the other sonoffs is pressed it sends an MQTT message to Home Assistant and an automation in Home Assistant toggles the sonoff that is connected to the lights. There is another way to do it more directly with "grouptopic" in Tasomta. That method wouldn't require Home Assistant. I haven't done it myself so I can't help you much, other than to know it exists. github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/wiki/MQTT-Overview Hope that helps.

welcome to home automation! I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. If you power off the sonoff it will save the settings and changes you made. It should also remember the state it was in when you turned it off. There are some settings you can change in the "Console" in Tasmota to tell the sonoff what you want it to do when you power it down and back on. Hope that helps!

If Home Assistant goes down you can't use the sonoffs. To solve that, the best way is to set a rule on each and every one of them. The rule send MQTT message to other sonoffs as in the example github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/wiki/Rules#2-execute-any-mqtt-message-when-a-button-is-pressed. From console: disable button topic # ButtonTopic 0 set the rule1 # rule1 on power1#state=1 do publish cmnd/sonoffs/POWER 1 endon on power1#state=0 do publish cmnd/sonoffs/POWER 0 endon activate the rule # rule1 on do that on all other sonoffs. Note: the GroupTopic here is set to "sonoffs". One may change it to say, "FrontCorridor" to all sonoffs involved. Cheers

If I want to replace the mqtt button with a spare smart light switch that I have, what is the proper way to wire it that allows it to be powered for triggering purposes but doesn’t hook it up to the circuit? It has 2 black inputs and 1 neutral input. I tried connecting it normally and I’ve also tried connecting the blacks of the wall together and only connecting the neutral to the switch, but it doesn’t work.
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 5 жыл бұрын
if you have a button you want to use to switch the sonoff but don't want it in the mains circuit then connect it to GPIO14 and ground. Without knowing more about that exact switch you have it's hard to say exactly how to wire it. My guess would be the black input should go to 3v, the black output to GPIO-14 (or 4 or 5), and the neutral to the neutral. But that might not work. If that switch you have is meant to run on mains and you only connect the black-in to 3v it may not work at all. If it is already intended for low voltage then maybe that arrangement would work. Sorry I can't say for sure.

Question - if you have an outlet box that has both a direct switch and also a three-way (or multi-way) switch that is not the primary (meaning you don't need the relay), is it feasible to use a single sonoff basic with two switches (using different GPIOs) so you can control both the direct light at the outlet and also the remote light at another outlet? Hope this makes sense... looking to reduce the number of sonoff's I need to put in a single switch box as it's getting crowded in there!
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 6 жыл бұрын
I think I understand what you're asking, and YES, that would be possible. What you'd have to do is setup the other GPIO (3 or 4) to Switch02, in the config window, then type "switchtopic2 'other_sonoff_topic'" in the Console to publish to the command topic for the other sonoff you're trying to control. That might not be a very good explaination. If you struggle with it let me know and I'll try to explain it better.

I tried this this weekend without success. Seems there is only one switchtopic so you cannot change the topic for a switch on GPIO03 separately from GPIO14. So only option may be to do it on the HA side which means I'll need to process all switch commands from the sonoff and then flip the relay from MQTT. The negative here is that the main switch at the wall will now rely on Wifi to work since it will no longer be directly connected to the relay (hope this makes sense). Have not figured out the details on how to do this yet, but I believe it's possible. Let me know if you have any ideas!! Thanks again for all that you do.

ok cool. Then if you're going to use the on-board button to control the relay instead of GPIO 14 just know that the on-board button has other functions in Tasmtota. github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/wiki/Button-usage That's part of the reason for using GPIO14, so you don't accidentally trigger one of these other functions of the main on-board button. Yes, you can use a rocker type switch. There's a way to change the function of the switch in Tasmota, so it can be a rocker or a button. Yes, the switch can still be used as normal. Meaning you can flip it on or off and the lights will do what you expect. By adding the sonoff you just add the ability to also control the lights in Home Assistant. If the lights are off in Home Assistant and you flip the manual switch they'll turn on. Regardless of which method you use to control them, they toggle. Hope that's making sense.

sure! to use MQTT you have to set up a broker. For most folks running Home Assistant that broker is Mosquitto and runs on the same computer (rasberry pi) as Home Assistant. So the IP address is the same as your Home Assistant pi. In the Tasmota Configure MQTT page the IP address goes where it says "host". For user and password, you also set those up when you set up Mosquitto. You don't have to use them, but I do. Cool buttons! I'm still using the original firmware so it was pretty simple (goo.gl/UhinVw). This second way allowed me to connect a resistor to dim down the 3V so that it doesn't become a night light, just a weak indicator (goo.gl/JcUaGT). Just curious if you see any problems with that setup or why you decided to go without led. Thanks!

Also, if you get to playing around with that, see if you can replicate the on-board led to the button so that the pushbutton is doing the same this as the led vs always being on. Anyone know if the ac250 10amp will work for DC12v 10amp?

DrZzs well I've found out now that these don't work with dc 12v and require ac power.

Mud Panther Sorry I just didn’t understand what you were asking. If you want a low voltage version check out the Sonoff SV. It works with 5-24v.

Do I need the arduino hub for this?
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 6 жыл бұрын
not sure what you mean by adruino hub. You do need Home Assistant (or some other smart home hub), since that's where the communication between the devices happens. There's another way to do it, that might not require a hub. I've been working on that video. Hopefully will be done in the next few weeks. Hope that helps!

Hey Doc, do you think is possible to use the additonal GPIO pins of a sonoff basic to do this same thing? As I see on the tasmota page, you can access at least 4 GPIO pins: github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/wiki/GPIO-Locations If you wire the 4 pins up to 4 switches on a hallway (D&D Adventure tiles? *clap*) or room, and configure the GPIO actions to on/off the sonoff, you can do the same with a single sonoff, with the added advantage that you don't need the mqtt messages for the additional switches, and the setup will work even if Home Assistant is down (that never happens, but, just in case)... You just need some filtering on the switches' cables (twisted pair, condenser or resistor setup) to prevent false activations on long cables for the antenna effect. Do you this this can work?

That sure sounds like it'll work! It's sure worth a try. I don't have much experience with filtering the switch lines. That's something I need to learn (and make a video about), because I get false activations more often than I'd like. I'd wonder about voltage drop as well. But it's worth a try. I'll put it on my list and get to it when I can. If you try it before I do let me know how it goes! And yes, nice pick up on the D&D tiles. That's Ashardalon the dreaded red dragon.

Just to put all info in a pack, I've seen this nice diagram from Radebe2k showing a basic filtering circuit (your videos are linked just 3 posts above this one!!! :D ) community.home-assistant.io/t/3-way-switch-with-sonoff/36309/13 I'm right now in a project to add a sonoff that way on a 4-way (3-way for me) on my home. I'll report the results back in a few days (hopefully)

Can these be controlled from Google Home

Out of the box, with the stock firmware, Yes they can. If you change the firmware to Tasmota, like I did, then you can set the sonoff to emulate a Belkin WeMo or a Hue Bridge. I haven't done it, but it should work. From the Tasmota home page go to Configuration, then Configure Other. There are check boxes for the emulations. Try WeMo first. I don't know how to google discovers devices, but once you select emulate and the sonoff restarts, the google home should be able to find it. www.dropbox.com/s/2d6ctfoirgwkj8w/Screenshot%202018-01-08%2011.58.59.png?dl=0 I'd like to know if it works so please let me know how it goes!

ah. gotcha! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mc6pic2lvsiUdXU.html If you have sonoffs with older firmware (before ver 1.6) you can use the Over the Air method: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbR2m7t-mriRpGg.html To check the firmware you have to setup the sonoff through the native software and in the eWelink app, go to the device settings page. It'll look like this: www.dropbox.com/s/pnr2z6c7gi0v0ei/IMG_7731.PNG?dl=0 I'd say it's probably worth just doing it the manual way. If your sonoffs are new, they are most likely ver 1.6 so the OtA method won't work. Good luck!

Is it possible to use tasmota with google home/assistant?
@DrZzs
@DrZzs 6 жыл бұрын
yes. There's an option to have the tasmotized sonoff emulate a belkin WeMo or a Hue bridge. One of those options should work. On the tasmota page on your sonoff, under Configuration, Configure Other, you'll see this: www.dropbox.com/s/2d6ctfoirgwkj8w/Screenshot%202018-01-08%2011.58.59.png?dl=0 I haven't tried it, but it should work. Good Luck!

Sorry, Tighe Donnelly, the emulation will likely not work anymore (community.home-assistant.io/t/google-home-hue-setup-change/13159/108). There is a new and more complicated setup that should still get it to work though: home-assistant.io/components/google_assistant/

Please never clip the conductor's !!! Fold them back neatly with a wirenut. Each box should have six to eight inches of (wire's) conductor's . Do these still comply to GFCI safety ?
