Determining the right size belt to make or purchase is crucial! In this video I talk about 3 ways to determine that size no matter what the waist size is that you’re building or buying for.

If you’re a leathercrafter then it’s only a matter of time before someone asks you to make them a belt.
When you’re making a belt the most important thing to execute is size. In this video I explain how to figure out what length to cut your leather so that your belt ends up the desired size.

Aussie saddlemaker here. This presenter knows what he is talking about and sounds to me like he has lots of experience. The first method is the method I use with customers from the buckle end of the strap to the hole that the person uses on his existing belt to do it up. This is very accurate. The second method of pant size with adding two inches, I use when a customer is buying a belt for a gift. The third method - The last tape measure method I use when a customer is not wearing a belt or wearing a fabric belt with no adjusting holes. I agree with kids belts, i recommend to the parents they buy a longer belt cos the high quality solid leather belt is gonna last for years and the kid is still growing. Typically, a child growing into a young adult, their waist size wont be bigger than 34" unless they are overweight. Teen boys are usually 30 or 32". I hope the presenter does more vids. My waist measured with a tape measure through the loops is 40 inches. When I measure my belt to the most used hole it measures 36 inches. What size belt do I order?

Great video joe! Im going to start my belt very soon and this is great info! Im looking for a thicker more stiffer (mo betta) belt so im going 8-9 oz with 5-6oz liner 👍 also its a edc gun belt

So, I measure from the fold to the hole most used and that's the size of a new belt to get?

I just take the measurement from my old belt from the buckle cross bar (Fold) to the hole I always use when tightening it, and apply it to my new belt, then I know its spot on . Then I apply two holes either side of that hole for possible + or minus future adjustment.

The problem I have (which isn't addressed anywhere that I can find) is that all the leather belits I've owned stretch--a lot. So, I walk out of the store with my belt buckeled in the center hole, but eventually the hole I use is one I've punched four inches away, which leaves a tongue that is way too long. Should I buy one that's about four inches shorter? My waist/pants size is 34.

Unfortunately, the trouble with most manufactured belts from the store is that they are not using quality leather and most of them have an artificial filler of some sort like cardboard to give them the thickness. A quality belt will not have that much stretch and the holes won’t wear out.

Good information. I do have a question that I haven't been able to find in all of the YT videos I have watched. Would carrying a gun holster on your belt charge the way you measure a belt. I have several different holsters that I use which changes the hole used depending. on the holster. Thank you in advance.

Depends on the thickness of the leather holster where the leather goes behind the belt. But this would be minimal perhaps allow one more inch. From a saddlemaker Down Under.

Is there a standard leather weight for belts? How do I pick a good leather for making belt blanks if I'm going to cut my own with a strap cutter?

I use and recommend Herman Oak Veg Tan. I tool on 8/9 oz and line with 3/4oz. If I’m just using one layer then I’ll use 11/13oz Herman Oak Skirting leather.

Thank you! This is the _One Thing_ that no one ever talks about when they make a belt. In sewing you take the waist measurement and add in 2" for ease of movement (and for seam allowances when you piece everything together). Thanks to Covid I no longer have a belt that fits me properly... ah well, summer is coming. _Quick question_ - how long do you measure for the belt buckle to fit in the fold-over-tab-area? Do you take the length of the 'tongue' (sorry, don't know the proper name) of the buckle (the pointy bit that fits through the hole)? i.e. is the length of the pointy-bit 'tongue' the same length as the slot that it fits through? Thanks! I've been messing about with leather since the Holidays. Thanks for the lessons. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

Great video Joe. I'm new to leather work and really enjoy your videos, I've learned a lot from them. I have volume 1 and 2 of your pattern books. I really like the new belt you are using in this video, the center basket weave with the scroll on each end. Maybe in a future video could you explain how you lay that out so it looks centered like that? Is it just eyeballed or is there a certain way you have to lay that out? Thanks again.
