If you’re a leathercrafter then it’s only a matter of time before someone asks you to make them a belt.
When you’re making a belt the most important thing to execute is size. In this video I explain how to figure out what length to cut your leather so that your belt ends up the desired size.

I don't care for the fuzzy unfinished inside so I always line my belts which cost me 4 hours of hand stitching. I don't really like the look of machine stitches. Anyway if I did not line I would use tokonole and a glass slicker on the flesh side. I also find that 1 inch spacing on belt holes is way too far apart. I've settled on 9/16" (I know that sounds weird but it works). I like your technique on just hammering the double cap rivets without bothering with the little anvil...never thought of that. Thanks for the video. Nice quality belt. It's amazing how much more work a fully tooled, lined, stitched, dyed, antiqued belt is.

I would agree with you on the fuzzy back side. It’s not my personal preference either. If I’m going to slick the back I use Resolene. I’ll have to give Tokonole a try sometime. Most of what I do gets lined and stitched (although I do use a sewing machine) It sounds like you make some nice belts as well. Thank you for taking time to watch and offer feedback and insight.

Thank you so much for sharing your tutorial. It is very easy to follow. Actually, I was looking for a video on how to set a smaller buckle on a simple wrist cuff (just like a scaled down version of your belt) and this was perfect. Thank you again. I love your channel!

I found this video about a day late for the dog collar I'm making. I had no idea how long it was going to take me to make the pattern! The video was very helpful and the 2 sets of acrylic templates I ordered today will be a real time-saver in the future! I was hoping that, since this video was about leatherwork using minimal tools, you would cut the oval slot with round punches & a knife. I had to do it that way and I found that it is WAY HARDER than it looks! 😵‍💫 If you have any tips & tricks on that procedure I would love it if you would do a short video as well as cutting the round end of the belt without a punch. Thanks for the wonderful video tutorial!

Joe one thing i have always been curious about. I know there is some that prefer a trophy buckle over a standard buckle. So my queation is do we need to cut the tounge notch out or can we skip that part

Great Video! I really enjoy your channel. But I have one question. What size edge beveler did you use on this weight of leather? Thank you

Great video! The first link for the belt loop comes up as sold out. Are you getting more in? The link for the templates doesn't work. It gives you a 404 page not found error. When you look through the website and find the templates. They are sold out also. Will you be getting more in?

I just started working with veg tan and I love it, this video is fantastic, I am going to give this a try. As a side question as I don’t know where to ask this…What glue do you recommend for leather in general, I am making a purse and I need glue? Ty keep your awesome videos coming

Thank you for taking time to watch! My preference for glue is barge contact cement. There are others that will work too, this is just my preference.

Great simple tutorial 👍😀 Just a quick question ... Is there anything to be done to the rear/ back side of the belt? ..sealing it with something? Or smoothing it out? Thanks

Yes, I don’t like the fuzzy look either. I use a product called Resolene by Fiebings. You can also use the same gum tragacanth that I slicked the edges with. Another person in the comments also suggested Tokonole. All great products that will work well.

Ok I have the belt to the point where I want to put a color finish on it and although I didn't do any tooling or stamping I like the antique finish ...my question is from veg tan with nothing on it what goes first the antique finish then the neatsfoot or the other way around and do I need to seal the top with a coat of something if it isn't the neat foot. Hope I am not confusing you . TY
@joemeling3216

If you’re using the antique for color rather than dye, I would do Neatsfoot oil, then antique, then seal it with Resolene.

No, you’re probably thinking of the boot shop. I’m located down by the Round up grounds, in next to the hall of fame. Just moved into this location last year.

Ohh I gotcha. I’ll have to come to town again soon and visit your shop. I see your scrap bin and as a beginner can always use some scraps for practice. Just got a nice workbench set up in my spare room. Been slacking so need to get back at it. Belt is next project.

Okay so here's my question, if I am making a belt for a 34-inch waist and I do 6 holes at one.inch apart how much length should I use for the return where the Buckle is and after the very first Buckle hole how far do you go past that for an overall length of the belt? If I didn't confuse you because I just confused myself

Omnigrid, which I think is actually a brand name (kind of like a Kleenex). Most craft stores will carry them.
