It might seem difficult to develop executive presence when you're not a leader. You might feel it's too early to develop executive presence and that you should wait until you get promoted into a leadership position before you begin to build executive presence. But the earlier to start to develop and work on your executive presence, the better.
Why? Because it gives you time to hone in on and perfect the executive image you want to portray, tweak it if it's not working the way you want, and establish in people's minds your executive presence so they see you as a leader sooner.
There are many steps to build executive presence. Sometimes it's about your outfit, body language or other external cues. Other times it revolves around your communication and whether you communicate like a leader. Then, there's the way you interact with others in the office. In this video, I focus on the 3 main ares you want to focus on when you're trying to develop executive presence when you're not a leader.

Individuals being intimidated by you means nothing to you as a person. I’ve learned many people battle insecurity and by default are intimidated by confident individuals with presence. I deal with this everyday no matter where I am. I’ve learned not to absorb peoples reactions to my presence it has nothing to do with me, but everything to do with the way they view or do not view themselves. You can be a nice down to earth confident person and insecure people still will not feel any better. Insecurity turns into jealousy and competition. It’s very much as struggle to be in the presence of such individuals, but you have to remain consistent. Never dominate, but also never compromise the hard work put in to build your self professionally to conform to the comfort levels of others. There will be individuals that cannot tolerate a confident presence.

Looking back, I remember the 2 ladies at my very small radio station group who used what I now know of as executive presence to essentially separate the business office end of the radio station from the studios where the radio jocks worked. They did this as a means of preventing the radio jocks from laughing too loud and talking too loud after their shift and essentially becoming a disruption to their work. Sometimes, they'd stroll in the office and just start talking. We needed to establish boundaries in some way. It was on the whole a rather relaxed place in a heavily agricultural area. Farm equipment routinely went in front of the place. Sometimes cows wandered over from the farm next door. There's your picture of how rural. After I was thrust into the operations manager position, I quickly realized I needed to focus on that paperwork end of the radio station group, too. Those 2 ladies who were sales manager and the traffic director (commercial scheduling and billing), approached me towards the end of the day when it was just the 3 of us. We mutually agreed it was business attire in our office the next day and thereafter. The experiment proved that guys who wear t-shirts and jeans into the studio to do their air shift rarely ever interrupt the workflow of someone in a tailored suit and polished shoes at their desk down the hall. Nobody ever interrupted us again. They could book appointments with any of us if there was a clear business reason. Our boundary was established and everyone in the company took the 3 of us more seriously.

Fantastic lesson. All should watch this 3 or 4 times with a period of reflection between each viewing. I’ve taken a class from Wharton on EP and your short video has more common sense embedded than 6 weeks of the other.

How do not worry about people’s thoughts of you to avoid getting in your head but also make sure that you’re leaving a lasting impression on people to feel your executive presence? Wouldn’t at some point we’d have to wonder what others think about us? I hope that’s clear.

Some bosses don’t have the power to promote you - it’s external many internal organizations so much nepotism - no matter how you look or walk in to a room sometimes it’s who they like

Real question - was this video created by AI? The info is comprehensive but I'm looking for the human here. I don't mean this as a dig - actually genuinely curious.

Nope, it was created by yours truly from scripting, to filming to editing to upload. You can rest assured, all videos on my channel are made by myself.
