I think that lots of us forget that things get clean when the detergent gets washed AWAY taking the grease and dirt with it, not when the detergent goes into the wash. If there's too much soap neither the dirt or the detergent gets rinsed properly. My old housemate had a problem with smelly washing, we upped his wash temperature and reduced how much soap he was adding by more than half and it fixed the problem over a few washes. It's counter intuitive that less soap can get a better result, but it's definitely true. I always use half the manufacturer's recommended dose as a starting point and sometimes even less than half works great! 💜

That vinegar trick is legit! I've been doing it for years, and it removes the buildup of laundry products (and who knows what else...eww) and that makes them super soft and much more absorbent. I use the vinegar about once a month or two, depending on how many times I've needed to run the towels through the laundry in that time. I know it's time for the vinegar when a newly-washed towel feels like it isn't absorbing like it should be.

@@dianebay6879 Very true. I also add baking soda to the wash cycle which helps deodorize and softens fabric some too, and I don't use liquid fabric softener and I go easy on the dryer sheets (I usually use half of one unless it's a really big load of laundry) to avoid that issue.

I agree, the cleaning microfiber towels make me feel like I have the driest hands ever. I don’t know how to describe it other then microfiber snags my skin on my hands when I pick it up. Then when I wash them, every bit of human and pet hair stick on to the towel as well as lint from the wash. When I pull out my “clean” microfiber towel from the dryer, it is caked in hair and lint. Makes a great lint magnet though for other loads. I guess I am supposed to hang dry microfiber towels but who has the space for that?

Once a week I’ll put vinegar in the fabric dispenser to freshen them up. Many years ago I use to add a little fabric softener (not no more). Just run them through the wash before you use them when you get them back from the seamstress so they don’t shed when you clean.

Thanks for the post. My favorite towels are pretty thin, tightly woven Turkish cotton bath towels. When I lived in Istanbul, Turkey where I would go to the Turkish hamam every week with Turkish girlfriends we would go every Saturday or Sunday for basically a full spa experience, there were always these tall stacks of towels in all different pastel colors basically the towels were bath towel size, with tassels hanging off of each end and a thin white stripe running across in lines all up and down each towel. So I got loads of those towels when I live in Turkey they, with my large fluffy white Turkish cotton monogrammed hooded bath robe are my favorite things for a Turkish hamam like spa experience every day in my home in Washington, DC. I do the laundry for my boyfriend and I and I usually do a light load of wash and a dark load of wash every week, sometimes more if we have overflowing laundry hampers!

I have a family of 3 and it’s all girls (me and my 2 daughters). We switch out towels 3 times a week each and when that time of the month comes around it is daily. So, depending on the week I wash 3 to 4 times a week if not daily a load of towels. We each have a set of 6 towels which is a bath sheet, bath towel, 2 hand towels and 4 washcloths per set. By 3 times a week I mean a load for each of us. We each have our own color for towels so, the girls have to run their own clothes and towels as well as other laundry so, our washer runs continually on a daily basis because we have assigned days for laundry and we get it done. Whomever is home on Saturday during the day gets the bed sheets and pillowcases through along with cleaning all the bathrooms, another gets the kitchen and dining room and then the other gets the living room, laundry room cleaning and all the bedrooms are done by each of us and the guest bedroom by myself on one of my evenings I am home and not working.

I just bought a new set of all white towels, after over 10 years with mine! Thing is, they were still bright white (regular Oxiclean and vinegar for the rinse), but they were practically dissolving. 😂 The fabric was disintegrating, so it was time! I love my new ones.

I generally wash my bath towels after 1-2 uses as I get back acne pretty easily & I find having a new towel each time helps cut down on it. They go in the hamper & then all the towels get washed on Sundays when the rest of the laundry gets done. We are a 2 adult & 2 dog household so there isn’t as much laundry as someone with kids but in mud season it means a LOT of towels get washed.

I use 100% linen towels in natural color, both plain and in waffle weave that I ordered through Etsy from suppliers in Europe. It only took a couple weeks to receive them and they are wonderful! Naturally anti-microbial, dry super fast, absorbent, and get softer over time. Plus they are durable; mine look as new as they did when I purchased them 5 years ago. If I have to put in the dryer rather than the clothesline because of weather they are dry in 5 -10 minutes. Waffle weave linen takes about 20 minutes to dry. Also have linen bedsheets and would never go back to cotton or flannel. Linen keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Since linen is made from flaxseed, it has so many benefits for our skin, especially sensitive skin.

@@deborahlee7975 - I ordered from 2 shops: Linenstars and Linenbeeshop. If you're not familiar with Etsy, when you put the name in the search box make sure you look underneath the box where they ask the question: "Did you mean the shop xxxxx?" Otherwise you'll be looking at every linen shop that sells linen - and there's alot. If you want linen kitchen towels, I highly recommend JupiterRed in Ireland. I was wondering the same thing, Rita. After learning about micro plastic particles and fibers years ago I simply cannot justify purchasing any more microfiber products. I don’t think this is a problem where one can just point fingers at any one country or whatever. The plastic problem is ubiquitous and affects every living creature, including all humans. But just “choosing not to buy” isn’t enough and not always an option for all.

I have a favorite laundry detergent with fabric softener. The company started making C-!9 supplies and have been out of stock on the fabric softener for about a year. When they ran out, I started using vinegar solely and haven't' missed the fabric softener at all. PS We change towels when I do it and that is usually when I smell them, twice a week, lol.

Ann, hi. You are lucky they ran out. My health ruined now over scented laundry products, fabric softener….detergents… They closed my throat up and I cannot swallow food. Going in for my fifth esophageal dilation. A service guy came out to the house. I had a mask on. He told me he had scented Gain on his clothes and that he wasn’t feeling well. When he left, I had a medical emergency. I could not swallow. I’m on all sorts of medication now and look like a refugee. I use plant based Better Life unscented. It’s really non toxic. I love it and no adverse health consequences will ever happen using it. There are unregulated chemicals in those products and they hide the chemicals under the word “fragrance.”

I heard a plumber warn that using vinegar in the washer (same for dishwasher) will more quickly degrade any rubber seals in the machine due to the acid content. That said, I have some of the original Makers microfibre dish towels and they are the BEST towel to use on wet hair! Wrapping my hair up in a Makers microfibre towel for 5-10 mins means my thick, mid length hair is about 80% dry when I take it off 😀 They really do absorb!

Hi, ist a great video! I wasch my towels on the hottest cycle with extra water. I use the right amount of powered detergent ( because they contains bleach). And my towels smells just great. Like this, I don't need to wasch my towels 2 times. And I can save some water and electricity. Your video is great. And yes, laundry stripping is nesessery if somebody can't wasch properly ( cold water and liquid detergent is not the right way)

I'm a homeschooling mom of 5 kids, so we use hand towels a lot during the day, I sometimes have to change them more than once a day. I dry them outside and then wash all the towels in the highest temperature. (I change bath towels after a few uses). Just because I use such high temperature and line-dry them outside, they aren't soft any more. I think I'll try vinegar :)

Dr. Oz did a segment regarding changing towels due to bacterial, including fecal E. Coli. I have a great tip. You can use a bath towel, hanging it to dry as you suggested, for 2-3 days. However, dry your genitalia with a face or hand sized towel and discard it to to laundry after each use. Lessens the risk of a urinary tract infection.
