Love all your great tips!! My grandmother told me hot water might set a stain into clothes. Many of my clothes are washed in cold water only & small amounts of gentle soap & cool setting on the dryer so they don’t fade. I have clothes from 1980s that look new. Thank you again for your helpful ideas! 😊🦋

While this sounds generally fine (especially about drying), my front load washer used to reek if you let stuff sit for more than a few hours. Turns out, my “cold water” wasn’t dissolving all the soap very well which was feeding mold/bacteria in the washing machine. I switched to washing on warm and all of the “smell” issues went away.

@@definitelynotaheretic.7295 I am keeping my mouth shut here, I don’t like to get involved in comments but I was waiting for this! You are correct. Soap needs warm water to activate it. It does no harm. Cottons should be washed in hot. I’m not an expert but I educate myself and I know the expert sources! Look up the laundry guy (laundry evangelist) and the laundress founders went to college for textiles before opening their business (the laundress). Between the two, they are the educated in laundry experts. I have learned so much. I’m not saying anyone is wrong or right here… everyone has to do what they feel is right for them. :)

Same with putting the item in the dryer with a stain on it. The heat can set the stain ever more.

@@definitelynotaheretic.7295 It can help using less detergent too. The amounts recommended by the makers of the product are usually excessive and more than what you really need (they want you to use more so you buy more frequently) and can cause issues with non dissolving and creating a film on the drum inside and out.

I must say: If you wash exceptionally greasy, blue collar work clothes at home, you know that cold wash is a nightmare… even with Tide Cold (all I use), cold temps essentially seal and solidify the grease on my hubby’s blue collar work clothes. Hot water pulls it out (and very well, at that). I definitely agree that the majority of loads do just as well (better even) on cold, but heavy duty grease, and whitening jobs, really need their hot temps!

I have two 65 pound furry dogs, so I use Fur Zappers in both my washer and dryer loads. Fur Zappers are these rubbery looking paw disks that rub across your clothes, picking up the pet hair from your socks and other fur trapping clothing articles. I actually use 5 of the Fur Zappers for my undie/sock load because we all wear socks in the house that really serve as floor sweepers! I swear by these to get rid of pet hair from even black socks!

My laundry game has changed so much, all because of you. I still use laundry pods because it's so much easier; as a wheelchair user, trying to fill those cups in the dispenser is always a challenge. I use the enzyme cleaner you recommended and it works great! I also have oxyclean and keep vinegar in the drawer as well. I give my clothes a snap when going from the washer to the dryer. I stopped using fabric softener and use wool dryer balls. I have a microfiber cloth on a hook on the side of my washer and when laundry is done, I clean the drum and the silicone rim. Since not using fabric softener, I've missed the scent in my clothes, but now I have something to try - that new Downy product looks promising. Thank you, Melissa!

I highly - HIGHLY recommend laundry detergent sheets!! You just add 1 to the washing machine basin before you put in your clothes so you won't have to deal with adding liquid to the little detergent area AND you help the environment by not using the plastic containers that the liquid detergent or pods are sold in - PLUS the detergent sheets take up no space at all and aren't heavy.

Less detergent and softener is the key. I use Tide liquid detergent, downy beads, and bounce fabric softener sheets for my towels & linens. Spot treat all stains with Spray n Wash before placing them in your laundry bag or hamper, helps to keep your clothing stain - free. I only use Clorox bleach when needed which is never. I wash all my clothing inside out it helps to keep them from fading and snagging. Air dry your clothing only… Dry your towels and linens on a lower heat this way they come out fluffier and wrinkle-free. And wash your clothes once or twice a week you’ll never have a laundry backup problem. Happy laundering! 😊

This was excellent! Instead of dryer sheets, I throw a clean dry bath towel in the dryer with the wet clothes. It kind of acts like the dryer balls. Also, when doing dress shirts, I only dry three or four at a time, and hang them up either as soon as the cycle ends, or a min before. Why? Not only do I hate ironing, I don’t even own an iron or ironing board.

I've recently returned to a front loader so a liquid detergent is the go, an Aldi product. I use white vinegar in the rinse cycle and cold water every load. I don't use or own a dryer as our Queensland Australia climate allows for air drying throughout the year. I occasionally use a booster with the white sheets and pillow slips.

We used to wash all our clothes at 30 degrees centigrade using the recommended amount of detergent and softener but our clothes always came out feeling slick and smelling musty, even after a further rinse and spin. We wear all our clothes until they are DIRTY and we freshen/spot clean between washes to extend the life of the clothes. We have a new machine (now 6 years old) and have soft water! We tried EVERYTHING before finally washing at 60 degrees centigrade and using HALF the recommended detergents/softeners. This is the only thing that gets our clothes clean and keeps them fresh. We air dry all our clothes/sheets year round and before, they were musty as heck, even dried outside on the line! Do what works best for your family - if you shower daily, don't work a manual job and wear your clothes once/twice before washing - you can probably get away with washing on cold. Otherwise, experiment with other temperatures, additional spins and rinses and HALF YOUR DETERGENTS/SOFTENERS! xx

Love all of your motivational tips! Today I have one for you.. I have a LOT of line dry items (bras, delicates and work clothing). Toweling them before hanging would take forever! My trick is to turn off the water supply to my washing machine after a load is complete, then I set the machine to the HEAVY load spin cycle. I let the machine do the work with centrifugal force, and my clothes dry indoors virtually overnight! No dripping fabrics.. so easy 😊

On occasion, I toss some oxi-clean powder in for odor or a cleaning boost. I use Downy fabric softener but not for workout clothes or towels. I am going to try Persil. I was using All Free and Clear for years (sensitive skin), but recently switched back to a less common detergent I remembered my family using as a child called SA8. It comes in powder or liquid so I use whichever is more appropriate for a given load (powder for towels or lights, liquid for synthetic or delicate fabrics). I add powdered oxygen bleach as an additive in pretty much all loads except delicates. I add vinegar to the fabric softener tray if a load feels like it needs extra help getting residue off. For stain removal I either use a spray designed for the particular issue (enzyme) or dawn dish soap I gently treat the stain with directly after it happens if it is grease. I like the delicate bags lately to cut down on wear and tear for some of my work clothes, and I wash in extra hot water for towels and my scrubs. I am interested to see if there is much difference with mostly cold water, and to try the 'rinse aid' to see if it is better than vinegar. I have been struggling with odor on synthetics lately (clean the washer regularly) so perhaps that could help.

great tips. I use tide pods (2 at most for really bug loads) a little baking soda, maybe some oxyclean. I have a habit of washing towels in hot water...but will try cold water now. Then I toss in the dryer with wool balls, and thats it.

In addition to vinegar I may use borax to help breakdown to boost the cleaning or I may use baking sofa which fights odours and cleans the residue left in the machine. Thanks for the video.

I'm in the UK so a little different I use Smol detergent I use Scentsy washer whiffs to add fragrance and use vanish oxy-action for stains. I wash on 30, on 28 min cycle unless it's bedding or towels they get the cycle for their material make up.

I like to use 1/2 cup white vinegar in the rinse cycle. It freshens the clothing and it's great for taking away stinky smells You can also add it to the beginning of the wash cycle along with your detergent.

All my clothes are natural fabrics and I use all purpose vinegar instead of fabric softener. Baking soda also helps in the detergent tray to make clothes cleaner and softer. I like Arm & Hammer baking soda detergent too.

I watched a bit live talk yesterday - Melissa was saying the actual amount of vinegar to washing machine water ratio needed is huge to make a difference. Therefore she now endorses this product that requires small amount.

Hi Melissa! My husband and I recently switched from old maytag machines to a new lg washtower. Do you have any thoughts/advise on specifically pod usage for HE machines? I went down to using only one pod, where we previously have used two, but wasn't sure if that was still too much.

Thx for all the laundry tips. What do you think of the laundry sanitizer? Does it really work? I started to use it during pandemic. Laundry sanitizer and this new Downy rinse both go the fabric softener tray. What if I want to use them in the same wash, should I add each to different rinse cycles?
