3 Ways to Make a Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt...Which Is Fastest?

A Quilting Tale

Күн бұрын

Christmas may be over, but it's still on my mind as I make a scrappy Trip Around the World quilt featuring Holiday Cheer fabric from Riley Blake Designs! I wanted to try three methods for making this quilt to see which would be fastest: traditional square-by-square piecing, the strip tube method, or grid panels. I do a full demonstration for how to use the Ten Sisters Easy Piecing Grid, and weigh the pros and cons of each method. Plus a little Christmas ambience is sprinkled throughout to keep that holiday cheer going!

Totally understand, Lynda. After I posted this video, I looked up the panels on tensisters.com (I bought mine from a quilt shop). I'll have to share this on my follow up video after I wash the quilt, but they sell the panels in bulk at a much cheaper price. It looks like you can get bundles of 6, 12, or 20, or a bolt of 50. The price goes down the more you get, and 6 start at $29, so less than $5 a panel. I know that can still be spendy, but it's better than $9, especially if you want several. Hope that helps. :) www.tensisters.com/product/easypiecing-grid-panels/

I used the tube method 35 yrs ago for the first quilt I made which was a Trip around the World for my first born. I bought the grid material a year ago to make the Tilda bouquet (pixelated) quilt and have been terrified to start it. You have given me courage. I quilt my own quilts on my domestic and I am concerned the extra layer will make this harder. I will be interested to hear what you think about the texture once it has been washed. Your video was so interesting, because I always think TAW quilts are so fast, (29 hours) but I have not done one on its own in years. I always work on them as leaders and enders (so no tube) and I always seem to finish one when I finish another quilt. My scrap pile determines the size of the squares and therefore the size of the quilt. I used to make 4 and 9 patch quilts as L and E's, but they never seemed to take care of the scrap pile and often required purchasing more background or lighter fabric to make it pleasing. Where TAW is impossible to make a stinker :). Lovely job. Thank you.

I'm happy you feel better about trying your grid! It's funny how hard it can be to make a dent in scraps sometimes, right? I can't speak to quilting with all the layers, but I didn't notice a big difference in the feel of sewing the top with the grid. I used a denim needle. I can say that the seams feel a little bulkier when pressing. If you end up quilting on your machine with a grid, you'll have to let me know how it goes!

I tried that Ten Sisters Grid a couple of years ago.. I absolutely hated it. It wouldn't stick to the fabric for very long no matter what I tried. Fabric softener and fabric starch will often get in the way of allowing the fabric to fuse to interfacings, grids, and other fabrics. This problem gets in my way when doing fusible appliqué, as the fusible no longer fuses as it should! 😕 I usually end up using a small touch of water/steam when pressing, if needed.

Back in the late 1980s, I helped my sister make an Around The World quilt for my parents' anniversary. Strip tubing was just beginning. It was before precuts, fancy rulers, or even rotary cutters. We spent time cutting yardage into 2.5" strips using a regular quilt ruler. Then we used the strip tube method. We both agreed that had we used another set of directions calling for the small squares, it'd still not be done. I'd NEVER attempt another one using the small squares. I do have the quilt on my to-do list using 5" squares. Jordan Fabrics has a video on how she did it with placing 5" squares in a circle on a table next to her sewing machine. I can just see me knocking that over and scattering squares all over. I'll probably use the strip tube method bc Life always interferes in my quilting time. And the strip tube method is great when you have to stop and start a lot.

I really enjoyed this video and the time comparison. You are easy to listen to as you explain things. Great job on the quilts. I have wondered if the cost of the stripology ruler is worth it. I think it just might be especially when compared to the cost of the grided panels. I realize that accuracy seems superior with the panels though.

I'm still waiting to get my quilt back from the long-armer, so I haven't held it with all the layers together to get a sense of the weight. I'll be sure to address that in my follow up video after I wash it. I can say that it definitely helps the top lie flat, but it was still plenty flexible when I folded it for transport. It didn't feel much heavier than I'd expect without the grid. The grid panels are very thin, almost delicate.

Could you have made the panels separately with the grid method and sewn them together at the end? I have a 10 sister's quilt to make with panels and that was how I was picturing putting it together - rather than fusing the grid all together first.
@aquiltingtale6230
@aquiltingtale6230 5 ай бұрын
Absolutely, you could make the panels separately and sew them. Just keep in mind that the fewer you fuse together, the more you'll need to pin/align before sewing together. I think you benefit from the accuracy of the grid the more panels you fuse together, but it's also a happy medium you need to find. Too many panels can start to feel cumbersome as you sew them on your machine, and too much weight pulling down on the grids can make them tear. They're pretty light and delicate. I found fusing three together (plus a partial grid to complete the row) was manageable, but wouldn't do more than that because I noticed a few grid squares were starting to pull apart due to the weight. I took extra care to realign those squares before sewing and it turned out fine, but the pulling apart could have been prevented with less weight/panels.

How would it work to make blocks and then sew the blocks together so there is not such a large piece to handle? I have not used a grid like this but sometimes I have made 4 sections to a quilt and then sewn them together so I didn’t have such a large piece to handle. Let me know your thoughts on this. Your quilt is inspiring and beautiful! ❤❤❤
@aquiltingtale6230
@aquiltingtale6230 Ай бұрын
Thanks, Becky! You could definitely make smaller pieces. Just remember, the fewer panels (or partial panels if you want to think in terms of blocks) you fuse together, the more pinning together you'll have to do to connect them later. The more panels you fuse, the less pinning you'll have to do. I like the grid because of its accuracy without having to pin, but if you're good at nesting seams, I think you'd still get the accuracy through pinning too. :)

I do not like the extra layer of the grid... Can you strip piece it without making a roll???
@aquiltingtale6230
@aquiltingtale6230 3 ай бұрын
Hi, Debra. I would imagine you could sub-cut 2.5" vertical strips from long strips sewn horizontally together. Instead of sewing the tube, you could move the vertical strip up or down a space to get your diagonal lines, remove the "overhang" piece(s), and reattach them to the top or bottom of the strip to keep the same number of squares in each vertical strip. Hopefully that makes sense. :)

Four hours less but significant extra cost for the grid and a lot of non-sewing time like clipping edges etc. I found this interesting but I will stick with the strip tube method.

The clipping was probably the worst part! There are pros and cons to every method, but it was fun to try a new one. :)

No way on the grid. Using jelly roll seems the fastest and less possibility of errors plus it’s just one more layer to deal with when machine or hand quilting.

You have a point on the extra layer. It felt light enough going through the machine, but I can't speak to hand-quilting it. :)

The grid looks very difficult and time consuming.

I can see how it would seem that way. It was actually the fastest method for making this quilt, even with all the filming and explaining. There are many quilt patterns out there that show you where to place each piece of fabric on a grid, if you don't want to figure it out on graph paper like I did. I was just sharing my thought process, but the work has definitely been done for many beautiful quilt patterns if you're ever interested in giving a grid a try. :)

seemed you were trying to highlight the grid.. a lot of time given to this segment of the video. I don’t think this method is at all logical for a scrappy trip around the world. I prefer the old fashioned way of chain piecing each square. I appreciate your intention and efforts. Thank you.

You're welcome, Shannon. Yes, I was trying to give a full demonstration for how to use the grid, so more time was spent on that method. The other two methods are more straight-forward or there are several other tutorial videos about how to do them, so I didn't spend as much time showing those methods. The grid method can definitely be more complicated trying to see it spatially, but I wanted to see if it was faster and yielded the same result. I'm really happy with how it turned out, but I totally appreciate the traditional method of piecing each square, especially if you enjoy the process. In the end, that's what really matters. :)

I’m sorry but that Ten Sisters Grid seemed like a whole lot of unnecessary work and wasted time. I’ll be trying the 2nd way of making one. Thank you for the comparison.

I get that. I wanted to give a full demonstration of the grid process for those who are curious about how it works and might want to try it. My hope is that some will find it helpful.

Thanks for showing these 3 methods Fallen! The grid method, as you stated is very accurate. I use the strip method and think I’ll stay with that💕🧵
