Interesting. I’d love to see your take on the harder styles of techno, like Ben Sims, Fhase 87, Skov Bowden or Uncertain. I have never been a fan of the EQ blend but do use the filter colour effect so I guess it’s similar. Phrasing is where it’s at and it wasn’t until recently that I could put into better words what I was doing as a DJ, it was always this. Harmonic key matching is another technique that should be practiced. I enjoy seeing these videos and after 30 years of playing tracks it still never gets old and always give a fresh insight for new ideas. Let’s have a hard-jack or hard-groove video next time. Techno never gets old for me. ☮️&💟

@@Snerdy0867 Yes, circle of fifths/camelot wheel is a great guide. Using camelot notation makes it simpler if you don't have solid music theory grounding. But often enough things that aren't a straight match in camelot can still sound good so it's just a guide

@@Snerdy0867 Is there a difference between the circle of fifths and camelot?
@adastra437
@adastra437 8 ай бұрын
@@realbddy1921They are just the same, but camelot is easier to use in a dj'ing context. That's because you just have to go a number up or down and you will be shifting to another fifth. Camelot is a more comprehensive notation if you don't have a strong background in music theory ;)

Basic techniques like these are really the most important, I think. Once you master them you can get more adventurous. I would add that using the filter in combination with the low EQ can give you depth to swapping the drop, or effectively extend a breakdown without using loops. Just be aware that filters and EQ curves are different on each mixer, and sound different yet again on each sound system so the optimal amount to turn the knob may be different on a club system than on your home system.

I like the layering technique because of the creativity you can create in a mix. Also with layering, you are free to use EQ-blending and swapping drops, which makes your transitions more varying rather than track for track for track, etc.

In my experience layering works best when the tracks have the same or matching key, same or similar BPM and most importantly that the genre (hard, trance, groove techno etc) or type of beat is the same. ♥ But you can also create very unique tunes when you mix different genres or bass types. In this case, your own creativity and vision behind the outcome is most important.

High quality content! Thanks for these videos. I've been learning to DJ for a year, but I mainly mix trance music. I also love acid and industrial techno. Those tips are very helpful as I want to add more genres and skills. The thing is that trance is so powerful with uplifting melodies and lows that it doesn't give much room for being creative and try these techniques. I'd love to see more tutorials regarding trance too ❤

This is a cool vid. Techno like Charlotte de Witte mixes def. over longer period to the point that the mix can never really be pin pointed. I suppose that to start, which has been a long time coming, I need to just get a Pioneer mixer and start messing around with it before I could produce my own or DJ with any skill. Techno and Trance. Hopefully find my own style. Anyone have any suggestions/recommendations on how to get started, what DAW, etc. I'll be using my iMac. ---If you use stems and create a new mix, making it your own, do you need the rights for copyright to publish the mix you make?

For point no2-swapping the bass; You mentioned that when you take the first track out it looses a lot of energy (high end like you said) I find this even more of a problem on certain tracks. Maybe ones with less quality audio or just quieter tunes. How do you go about this problem? Wait for a drop on t2, or maybe push the eqs higher one new track? Thx
@jom.6181
@jom.6181 8 ай бұрын
check if the gain is correct for every single track, some are mastered louder than others. it should always hit the same spot on the mixers db scale for an evenly loud mix. Now if you want to introduce a more mellow track after a hard hitting one u could wait longer and go for an intro-outro mix. can work to introduce like a new 'tone' to your set. after a while of the 'reduced' parts of your tracks aka the outro and intro the stuff that kicks in after the intro will feel new and interesting. it can be a good contrast to more agressive mixes before in the set. but I guess it just really depends on the tracks you play
@intraphage
@intraphage 11 ай бұрын
I think it really goes to show mixing is very stylistic. I personally detest blending lows in techno it can throw everything out of phase. I think cutting the lows by about half for a drop down section on the first track and immediately replacing them with the other track's kick is a lot tighter

thats what i like to do, swap the lows first, sometimes gradually, sometimes harshly for the extra grit and aggressiveness

@intraphage
@intraphage 10 ай бұрын
@@tom.cresswell haha glad to hear. i take it you blend two breaks then maybe occasionally bring a kick in by slowly bringing up the new track’s volume fader and filtering in from a hard low pass with the his and mids cut a bit ?
@tom.cresswell
@tom.cresswell 10 ай бұрын

Especially regarding the first technique, while this might be true for very "slow and soft" techno, the techno which is much more played at the moment is harder techno (Nico Moreno, Shlomo, Alignment, 9x9, Klangkuenstler) and you would never do such mixing for this subgenre of techno.

@cristina_garcia

I had the same problem too. I cut the highs and the lows to create something similar. Mids can be still heard, but once you cut highs and lows, they're almost imperceptible. Not having a mids EQ is not so bad. You can still cut them on your DJ software but it's less practical. Enjoy your journey to mix and don't give up 😊

It’s done through setting hot cues, if you know the music you’re playing and set the right cues you can fit them together like a jigsaw :) look up phrasing for DJs on KZfaq that will help!
@zombiefighterxxl931
@zombiefighterxxl931 Жыл бұрын
i usually do it like that: look at a track go to the nearest drop hear out the exact location when it starts put a hotcue there. Then go 32beats back or 64 or even 128 and listen what a good spot would be to start a mix (can be done with beat jump btw) then place a marker there. Later on u have a lot of tracks with markers everywhere and you just start when the markers fit :) or you just feel it like me. If u notice that u need more of one song before the drop u can always start looping DJ's do that hotcue stuff for the workflow so we can just hit that hotcue and all fits right. Because if u got 1beat off it will mess up your drop (thats why im going right from the drop backwards in fixed steps) Techno is realy simple with Beats btw. Try it go to any techno Track and go from any Start of a Drop forward and Backward in 16beats steps ill guarantee u ull get every important part of a song with very few exceptions.
