The 1st step of the 3 will put us in touch with what an orchestra director, arranger-producer does, all those things we see today in the so fashionable digital recording were there already before the gramophone was invented. Masking happen even in the air, some sounds have reason on others resulting is each other distortion to some extent. Great little video it will take the attentive and aware listener to the music magic pot where everything is connected.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention using a frequency analyzer like the Voxengo SPAN plugin‎. I use SPAN to see and hear the “core sound” of each instrument and then ensure the other instruments are out of its way. This frequency slotting enables me to ensure each instrument is clearly heard.

holotropik what features does it have that make it good for this? I've never tried it. I use trackspacer on every mix , usually for kick/808 masking, vocal vs beat (in one track) for hip hop vocal recording and sometimes snare punching out the hi hats. It's like sidrchain compression but done with a dynamic EQ instead. (Actually I think it has 31 bands 🤔)

Doesn't mention sidechain compression or even the concept of mid/side EQ.
@youaintasbadasyouthink
@youaintasbadasyouthink 5 жыл бұрын
Because too many people think sidechain is the go to for when there's masking, but forget that it can shape the sound in a way that's not beneficial to the mix. Volume riding / automation is better than side chain, and has been used in way more hits the last 3 decades than sidechain. However, sidechain does work well for mixing low frequencies, but can be overdone really easily.

Because there's no need for. All of that is overkill. There's no need to use every procedure learned or every function within a DAW. Less is more.

When you try and choose an amp in the shop then you take it at rehearsal with the band and it sounds shit....that is also freq. masking! but of course this is an example that won't brush on very well these days

This is why young folks need to go to school, to sum up, this video in one simple sentence: Less is more. Unless you're recording a symphony orchestra. You don't need 20 plus tracks. In modern genre music 6 to 10 at best. Stop overcomplicating things, also another trick school teaches you. If you can hear an effect it's a very good chance you have too much. Effects should be light and very subtle. Though the mastering process it's going to automatically amplify. Long story short. Work smarter, not harder.
@StevieMasters
@StevieMasters 5 жыл бұрын
"Effects should be light and very subtle" your comment is very subjective and defined only by the genre and by the wishes of the artist. There are many genres including rock classics that break this narrow view. Music is about creativity and not about rules. Many old rock tracks were dripping wet with reverb and spring delay. EDM, Trance, Vocal Trance, many highly successful electronic tracks are completely wet with effects as are many pop tracks. There is a huge list of albums that would argue differently with your point of view. Maybe this is why older dudes need to go back to school. I think the younger people with fresher ideas have the advantage of not being stuck with obsolete information that people continue to push, and the younger dudes have proven time and time again that wet tracks work.

@@StevieMasters the problem with your comment is art may be free but it still has rules to live by also considering 70s and 60s rock the effects were very settled yet extremely compressed. I've been in too many rock and heavy metal studios not to know this, this was actually during my internship with Capitol Records. I interned with a very well known engineer and producer that had the golden rule in gold letters tack to the wall of the studio which was: Less is more". It applies to all genres. Especially modern genres that are naturally bass-heavy and dominated by synthetic sounds which are the hardest sounds to wrangle. Even Jimi Hendrix knew that. When he was on stage he turned his amplifier all the way up but his effect pedals were very subtle. He toyed with frequency masking when he made the heavy reverb version of Voodoo Child. Too much effects will destroy the mix and fixing it will require too much work, it will go from being music to a mathematical formula and science project. The best of the best engineers will tell you if you hear an effect while mixing a track that means it's too much. Once again after mastering all the effects will automatically amplify. I actually learned that the hard way before my training. Also, older people shouldn't go back to school being nothing has really changed with the exception of the DAW and that's nothing more than an extension of the producer and engineers hand. Even with the Daw, nothing has really changed since 1984 with the exception of the packaging. It's the same commands, same process. But it's the young people that need to 1) put pride to the side and get formal training 2) get rid of the know it all mentality assuming youth outweighs experience and listen to those that have been around before them. One thing about it, us old folks have the extreme advantage, We are now were you young folks want to be or hope to be.

@@bigman72511 still the whole effects thing is quite irrelevent, effects can be used in multiple ways.. you can make a guitar feel like its in a small room, or you can make a guitar sound like some entirely new instrument.. less isnt more if your making a shoegaze track and you got yourself a dry ass guitar signal
