I prefer to use cornflour baby powder, it's not as cloudy as baby powder with talc. Matt medium is the most simple. I never use Modpodge as it's not as good as professional mediums and you can get it in 2, 4 and 5 litre tubs which I decant from

Hi Tammy.... I found this recipe on another channel for clear gesso where I use cornstarch instead of the baby powder (probably the same results). I use it on older thin book pages, both sides, to help keep them from tearing apart. I can then paint, ink, etc and the pages still stay intact. I also use this for decoupaging on my masterboards, including sticking stamped tissue papers and it comes out really nice with no shine. I keep my mixture in a bowl like you have and it has kept for months. Thanks again!

@ninafairhurst7500
@ninafairhurst7500 Жыл бұрын
@@jenx4433 I use 1 cup PVA glue, 1/3 cup water and 3 tablespoons of cornstarch. I add more water if needed. I have had this mixture now for about 2 months and just add more water and stir good. It does leave a texture and some wrinkles just like Tammy's so test first. I haven't tried this on shiny pages though....let us know if you do this, I would be interested. Tammy started an interesting thread here!

@@gr8fng this recipe dries clear, if you add some white acrylic paint, then it makes white gesso. To be clear, this is a homemade gesso. I do not know what is in store bought gesso, but this works great for me.... So maybe try experimenting with small amounts to see if you like it...

I love these ideas. I wished I had seen this a few months ago when I created my first junk journal. I used magazine pages and really didn't like the shine, so I covered it with paper and collaged over it. The magazine is not visible anymore. I'll try both of these. Thanks for sharing. The reason you’re seeing spots of shine on the book pages is because of the ink used on the dark areas. If you do any kind of Gelli print with magazine transfer you know that the dark ink acts as a mask. So dark images will repel the solution applied on top. I do a lot of collage art and I’m curious how the napkin idea will work on top of the finished collages. Will have to try on something I don’t care for since you never know what will happen. Thank you for this. Will be following you.

High gloss, gloss, semi-gloss, semi-matt, matt. Rough is usually matt due to the added grit. I used matt acrylic extra heavy gel medium for years with a pallet knife to dull shiny papers. I wonder if perhaps the reason you are getting the "watermark" look, as you refer to it, is from the paint brush grabbing the granules of cornstarch and pulling them off the page. I haven't tried it, but I bet that if you were to mix a small amount of corn starch into some cold water, and then cook it (not enough cornstarch to make gravy, but a thin mixture), then let it cool. Try that with or without the glue mixed in after the cornstarch and water mixture are cool. It will help dissolve the cornstarch and then it should glide over all portions of your paper evenly. You could try making some somewhat thick, and gradually thin down samples until you get the right ratio of water and cornstarch. Too thick and it will flake off. Just a thought. On a completely unrelated note, you said you had a frog in your throat. That reminds me of when my kids were little. I would say that, and they would excitedly want to see it. :) So I tried saying I'm hoarse. The excitement level skyrocketed. :) Anyway, I like where you are going with your ideas.

Baby powder and cornstarch should give identical results since most baby powder now is made of cornstarch, anyhow. However, before using it on a baby, check the ingredients of baby powder from dollar stores. I've found that many from China still contain talc.

I think I like the napkin technique for the simplicity, But I can see where the powder would work well too. So would you say last method was like ''cream/ wall paint ... looks like beaten egg consistency? lol, An easy way to measure stuff like this is to use a digital kitchen scale. You pour in the products as you stir and just note the weight change. like glue 4 oz., water 2 more, and powder 1/3 oz stir then add in a touch more water, .2, .4 , then you know exactly 2.4

I would say it is not as thick as wall paint have it thin enough to drip off your paint brush. Once you use it you will have a preference on how thick is best for you. Thanks for watching.

If you decided to go both ways should be fine as long as you end up going one directional way before you let it dry. You will see the stroke marks when it dries.hope this helps.

cornstarch is just fine....in the "old days" baby powder was talc based (as were a ton of scented body powder options for women)....talcum was the base in question...but J&J switched to cornstarch as their base in 2020...and I believe there is a ban set for this year in fact....so be sure to check your powder - esp if it's an off brand...if it has cornstarch as the base, you are good to go..........if it's talc, you might want to consider purchasing a new cornstarch-based bottle......
@bconsilio3764
@bconsilio3764 Жыл бұрын
The new baby is talc free. Johnson’s and Johnson’s took all baby power off the market and replaced it with the kind she has. BTW I’m over 60 years old and have used baby power almost every day of my life (several times a day) and do not have cancer. (IMO) So I believe it was unsubstantiated with pressure from the public. Baby power has been used for more than 60 years on probably 90% of babies in the USA alone and the percentage of women with cancer supposedly attributed to baby power is infinitesimally small comparatively! Don’t scare people; the media is very good at that. They don’t need help on YT commenter’s making their own art supplies! And Absolutely everything causes cancer if you listen to so called ‘experts’. Don’t breath, drink water or anything else, don’t eat veggies, fruits, processed foods, meat, dairy, grains-everything has been contaminated by the air, soil, water. If you are so worried about it wear a respirator. We all have been schooled in that! Have a safe day!
