I have experienced 3 years of daily corset wearing, and in this video I will share 5 surprising benefits of corset wearing for emotional health, posture, pain relief & more!
I wore historical, hand made corsets every day for a few years (even through a pregnancy), and loved it! Corset wearing is one of the most misunderstood aspects of history, and if we can see past that, corsets (when well fitting and comfortable) can actually offer us some surprising benefits.
Please note that nothing in this video is medical advice, and I am not a medical professional. Please do your own research and consult with your medical practitioner if you are unsure if corsets are for you.

I am currently gathering the supplies needed for my first corset! I bought a pattern from Black Snail Patterns, the Edwardian Straight Front Corset. It says to use 7mm whalebone "baleen"- I was wondering if 6mm will work just as well? Thank you!

I used to work as a costumed and corseted reenactor in St. Augustine, Florida. I could comfortably sit on a backless bench for hours without a problem because my corset provided all the back support i needed and my 16th century skirts provided enough padding to make stone comfortable. I also found that it's more comfortable (less uncomfortable?) to have an allergic reaction to tobacco smoke in a well-fitted 16th century corset than in a modern bra. I've gotten rubbed raw by my bra band from the friction of my chest expanding and contracting violently as i struggled to breathe, but the corset support is gentler and more spread out. The chemise worn under it cushions that support even more.

My grandmother belonged to the suffrage movement, her job was to burn a corset during the demonstrations for women's rights to vote. She was arrested and bailed out. She did this in various cities. Personally, I think corsets are pretty. My mother always wore a girdle after she had a baby. It made her body feel better. My mother had eleven children.

@@QSnarf in a different comment, maybe even the pinned comment… Katherine offers a corset sewing class for beginners! I have not taken it so I don't know anything about it. I just saw that post. Also there's a lot of really great so we can patterns online. One of my favorite companies is red threaded. And there's a ton of KZfaq videos about how to do corset sewing! It's really fun actually. If you're a process oriented person, especially. As Noelle from costuming drama says; sewing corsets or stays is just knowing how to sew 100 straight lines. 😊

I started wearing a corset consistently this year. It's a *huge* help. I used to not be able to stand or sit up straight for very long due to low back pain, but the corset keeps me going for a full work shift no problem. It's not the best made corset - my mom's first try, and we were modifying an extremely poor commercial pattern from etsy - but it's already such an amazing improvement you honestly can't convince me to go back to bras ever.

Yes I’m with you there, I have scoliosis so standing at the kitchen sink for just 5 minutes has had me in screaming pain, all down the left hand side. I also have a placenta hernia and until I can have surgery to fix this the corset helps to keeps it supported. Wearing the corset helps me keep active because of the full support. Best thing is you can make so many pretty corsets even with modern clothes. One thing is I wish I had been wearying them pre-menopause when I had my monthly cycle it could have helped during that time of month simply because it held your stomach and lower back which would be supporting those muscles. I have no idea why people think that it’s only used for pulling in the waists. I find as long as you can breath all the way down to bottom of your lungs then it’s not too tight. The other reason for wearing the corset is because I’m over large up top I could never find a bra that helped with removing the weight off my shoulders, the corset solved that issue the very first time of wearing one.

In body therapy the lower back represents support. Especially support from ones father. And you got my attention at point number 1, because whenever my husband firmly grabs my waist I feel relief and support, both physical and emotionally. I have only worn a corset three times when I was an extra in a movie and it wasn't uncomfortable at all - except I couldn't eat as much 😅 You have now convinced me; I want a corset!! 😀👍

Extremely late to this video, but this was such a great conversation (and thank you Katherine for recommending my book!) I also wholeheartedly agree to the final caution re: pelvic floor weakness or pre-existing prolapse. I get so many messages from pregnant folks asking me how long they have to wait after delivery before they start wearing a corset. I always tell them to wait and see how delivery goes. Without going into too much detail, my pregnancy was textbook perfect, but when I went into labor my regular OB wasn't there and my case was mis-managed by a resident in a teaching hospital, resulting in damage and multiple surgeries so that I couldn't wear corsets for the entire first year until I was fully recovered and rehabilitated. Congratulations to your fifth, that is truly amazing! And thank you again for the mention 😊

I have been thinking about wearing a corset because I have a large bosom, and have had shoulder injuries that are exacerbated by bra straps. When I was in high school, my doctor prescribed longline bras to combat neck and headaches, but I still ended up with huge furrows in my shoulders. I hope to be able to take your course in the future, as my sewing machines are in storage until my fiancé and I get married this coming May.

I wore a corset to get me through the pain until I got a breast reduction I was a j cup now I'm a g cup. I could not afford a custom corset so I was stuck with an off the shelf that did not fit too well and even that was better than nothing. (bras aggravate a rib injury I had as a teen). So I'd say go for it. One thing that was a down side for me: I got a lot of attention from men which I hated as I am NOT attracted to men. So body issues were exacerbated.

If it didn't cost so much time to make one I would wear one. I wear a waist trainer occasionally, and did wear it daily for almost a year to help heal diastasis recti and an umbilical hernia. I had a lot of the same benefits you mentioned. *I didn't wear it with lazy abs though, meaning I consciously held my abdominal muscles flexed through the day and it served as a reminded and support for that muscle training. I actually gained pelvic floor muscles through that time and no long have urine leakage now that my core is strong again.

I spent 2 months volunteering to build and used a back brace everyday, even to do seemingly menial tasks that required to crouch a lot. It’s was a blessing, so I’m not surprised a corset is helpful in day to day activities, actually the back brace is also built with boning. I already knew corsets could be helpful but now I’ve lived it myself and I look forward to making a corset.

I'm 60 and I've had scoliosis since my early teens, which have gotten worse with age, also due to cancer treatments, early menopause and osteoporosis in my spine. The muscels in my back are constsntly sore. I bought a vest that is made of a tight-knit slightly elastic fabric, similar to shape wear, but being a lot more elastic. I can only wear it in the cold season. When I put it on it feels so good around my rib cage hips, hugging me. May sound silly, but it's very pleasant and my back muscles are less sore.

I soooo want to try wearing a corset. Years ago in my early 20s, I spent several weekends during the summer working at a Renaissance Fair & wore a costume corset. I loved it & have been interested in wearing a real & supportive corset. I like the posture enhancement & frankly, the overall body shaping properties. Hearing that it can help w/mental health is very intriguing & just adds more incentives to my desire to wear a corset. Problem being, I haven’t sown anything since high school home ec class! I don’t even own a sewing machine. But I’d so love to have one made especially for me.

My 98 year old mom wore a Maternity girdle during her four pregnancies. It laces up like a corset... She said it took the weight off the sore places if she put it on during wake up before she stood up. She had always worn shape wear, and encouraged me to do so when my back hurt. Elastic support is always a help. A corset seems like a natural help.

I wear a back brace like you would buy at Home Depot, but it is problematic for starters the velcro sticks to my clothes. It also isn't tall enough to help my entire back. After searching the web for a better one and coming up with nothing, I am going to embark on designing my own, but as I started thinking in that direction, I stumbled onto your channel and now I am moving in the direction of designing and making my own corset. I have a degree in fashion design and have made period costumes for stage production and wedding attire.

Wow! Thank you for sharing this information. I totally believe that corsets help with pain relief; and it has helped relieve my pain every time I wore corsets! I I have not worn a corset on a daily basis but have had a few. I have suffered back pain my whole life due to "s" scoliosis and have worn girdles for years; which helped all the same benefits you have mentioned...except 1980s - present girdles are never quite long enough (torso) or have fabric that wears well from being made out of modern elastic fabrics that do not keep their shape. I have always said "shame on COCO Chanel for introducing the "freedom movement of removing corsets". I am a retired fashion designer/tailor and am excited to check more into this subject! Seems like a good idea to make custom corsets now since I need one too. ❤

I’ve been in pain this year because for over a year I haven’t been wearing bras because they don’t fit me. I’m a very conical shaped skinny girl and my spine and bust needs support but my rib cage size is different from my slightly small bust size. Nothing fits well or looks that great. Not wearing a bra has painful results, even though I’m discreet about it. Skinny people with a small bust very much need what you have been describing.

Just a helpful tip. You may want to have it serviced before using it. Newer machines are built to be used shortly after being purchased, and consistently thereafter. When they sit unused, even new, the oil can gunk up the machine so it needs to be cleaned and rejuvenated. If you use it while it's in such a state, it'll decrease the life span of the machine. Think of a sewing machine as a car.

There's a lady who sells organic flannel wraps for doing castor oil packs on the abdomen. She says that the light pressure (in her case, from the flannel wraps) around the abdomen do induce a sense of relaxation. And she also says as we breathe in and out, the light pressure on the diaphragm helps move lymph through that area. Obviously, only light pressure and not too tight.

I think in modern life having a weak core and suffering from headaches and backpain from resulting bad posture (also no one tells you to stand up straight anymore) is really common. And having a heavy bust dragging you down. Bust support in a bra is meant to come from the band but when you have quite a bit of fat around the ribs you are either having a too tight band digging in or you have very little support from it. Resulting in pulling on the shoulderbands. The old support wear used to be full torso, you used to be able to buy them at the market stalls here so I got a good look, they could hold in everything from the hips up, just like a corset really just more flexible and washable. And then of course the step in with it for hips and thighs. For a smooth look under the dress. I think it's only really recent the bra was all you had. It's interesting that the pressure makes some people les anxious, for me I can't take anything too tight around my stomach or trying to hold my stomach in, I need to practice belly breathing for relaxation. That is restricted by a corset unless it's very loose around the waist.

I’m getting a breast reduction in Jan of thinking about it for about 10 years. My reasons are that it’s a horrible difficult experience buying bras and clothing and I have horrible back and shoulder pain on top of a chronic illness. I’ve never buy a bra I actually like. I literally just buy what fits. And with clothing I have to size up so much to make it fit that it makes me look sloppy and baggy. Which is so frustrating because I have a 29” waist. I’ve looked into corsets and tried to get one made but she just couldn’t get it right because of the 11” difference.

Worked for a plastic surgeon for five years. He specialized in breast reductions. It really did help with some headaches, neck pain, shoulder and back pain. Just keep in mind that when your breasts are smaller, if you have a large belly ( common with large breasts because physical activity is difficult), it will appear much larger. Good luck. Enell bras help with physical activity both before and after breast reduction surgery.

I know why it does that to your mental and emotional health. It’s because it’s pressing on your belly where your visceral fat is. We hold our emotions there and the pressure is going to help pull up unresolved emotions. We do agree that corset training makes your belly smaller right? Because it’s helping to process visceral fat which would also make your belly smaller.

I loved belly binding after my 4th & 5th. My 6th & 7th I got hemorrhoids pushing. My 8th I didn't, I was so shocked, so I put on my old binder on the loosest setting 3 days after baby & gave myself a new hemmy as well as my old one popping out again. My pelvic floor itself is pretty strong though.

A lesser known fact is that our bodies have skin regions that have (more) sensors that stimulate the feeling of safety and bonding. In particular of imporance for babies. Those skin regions are (amongst others) upper back below the neck, the inside lower arms and halfway the flanks (at the lower ribs). Typically the regions that make contact when holding a little child (or your partner!). Corsets might stimulate the flanks regions, resulting in the first benefit mentioned.

I wonder if someone should try the belly binder first and see if they even like the way it feels before investing in a corset. Also core strengthing might help too.

Thank you, Katherine! Extremely informative. On that cautious side, do you think a corset is not that suitable for menopausal and older women where the pelvic floor will have a natural tendency to weaken? Otherwise, all the benefits seem to fit older women's needs so well.

If you are unsure, it would be wise to consult with a pelvic floor PT. Most people could benefit from some pelvic floor PT (simple exercise to do at home) If and when everything looks good, corsets would definitely be great to try!

Childless, apple shaped yogini here. I’m fascinated, because none these benefits relate to me (I’m currently in the planning stage of a self-made bra). Especially number 4 is anathema to me, because practically all corsets nip in the waist in some shape or form. The only example I know is the regency period. But when I’m not apple shaped I go straight up and down. I don’t want my private body masked by something it is not and never will be. But thanks for a great video, because we are all so different and what a joy that is.

I think the invention of these sorts of support garments must have always been functional in nature before they became so heavily associated with fashion and beauty for the simple fact that humans becoming bipedal had a cost. That cost being the strength and health of our backs. The mechanics of no longer having a tail for additional support and balance along with our pelvis shape and where it’s situated puts a lot of strain on our backs, especially the low back. It’s not an “if” but a “when” that humans will begin to have issues with their backs. Most especially women because of our centre of gravity and, obviously, pregnancy and early infant care. So, especially when every human was engaged in some form of physical labour every day of their lives and were likely on their feet most of the day, having that additional support makes perfect sense and makes me wonder why in the heck we ever did away with it. I know many non western cultures did not have corsets as we think of them, but pretty much every culture has had something akin to it at some time. Even the way mens coats and jackets and waist coats were designed added support and aided good posture, but they also wore a version of corset for added physical support. Soldiers would wear these bands to help them endure the strenuous rigours of long marches and the physicality of combat. So, really, we are the odd ones for not wearing them.

It does, as a DD cup borderline E I have never found a bra that could help or actually be comfortable, a well made corset has made a huge difference for me, it has removed a lot of the weight of my shoulders, but has helped with my scoliosis as well. Corsets do a brilliant job of distributing the weight of heavier breasts across the whole upper body. Bras put all the weight directly on the shoulders.

I just had the thought that maybe the weakened pelvic floor is the reason why doctors believed the uterus was held in by strings. The belief was that the uterus was held in by strings and tight lacing a corset could cause those strings to break, causing uterus prolapse. Maybe the reason is because long term wearing of a corset can weaken the pelvic floor and cause uterus prolapse. If so, the "fix" for this potential is to ensure you remove the corset periodically to do core exercises.

Hopefully this is a good place to ask this question. I have a very small bust for the size of my frame, and I always hear people talk about corsets for large busts, but what about small? I recently made my first ever stays - the Laughing Moon Regency long stays - and I had to use the smallest bust gusset available yet I have a 36 inch waist. I like the idea of wearing a corset, but i know that regency one did nothing for my body positivity in the bust department lol. I have always worn molded bras just so I can achieve a more "flattering" shape and have some definition between my bust and waist. I know corset times used padding, but how would you pad the top area out for wear with somewhat modern style clothes? I would really love to try wearing corsets, but I've just never heard any experience with a small bust and I'd love to hear other people's stories.

Really puzzled by this since core strength is essential to proper posture. Anyone have any enlightening comment on this? @rosabutcher5092

They recommend belly binding for a maximum of 40 days after giving birth, so you get the benefits both physical and mental, but after you’re past that initial stage your muscles can start to do that important work of healing themselves and toning back up. I would definitely recommend belly binding after trying it following my third baby(after seeing Katharine’s video on the topic). Made such a difference to how I felt in those first few weeks.

Hi Katherine 😊 thanks so much for your video. Can wearing corsets help reduce or eliminate under breast rash for large chested women? Also, how practical is corset wearing if you live in a dry hot climate?
@EmL-kg5gn
@EmL-kg5gn 6 ай бұрын
The practicality for your climate would be influenced a lot by the materials you choose and what you wear it with!! But I think it would reduce rashes compared to modern bras. In modern bras the pressure is all concentrated on one thin band (and in the shoulder straps for us large chested women) and that makes rashes much more likely. I find that even the best bra still can’t keep my chest up, so there’s also more contact between the bust and underbust and that causes rashes too. But corsets have better support and distribute the strain better. They also allow you to wear things underneath that absorb sweat so the odds of a rash would be much lower!
