Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Yngwie Malmsteen Licks From 1984.
Yngwie is a massive influence on millions of guitarists all over the world, as his pioneering classically-influenced music and intense technical focus spawned thousands of imitators and legions of fans from rock, hard rock, metal, and shred guitarists alike.
This lesson takes a look at several ideas that came from a live concert in 1984 when he was still playing with the legendary group Alcatrazz in Japan. The ideas range from signature Malmsteen licks and phrases that he's continued to mutate and evolve over the years, along with a few elusive ideas that were unique to that part of Yngwie's early career and playing style.
There's plenty here to challenge those progressing toward shred guitar technique and phrasing, not to mention a huge technical boost for anyone that's interested in sharpening up their picking/fretting hands on the guitar - which is something that just about anyone would benefit from greatly. This episode has plenty of picking, sweeping, and shredding for anyone looking for a vintage Yngwie challenge.

Me and my buddies followed Yngwie's tour bus to their hotel after the Rising Force concert back in '84. Yngwie and Jeff Scott Soto went on to their rooms. Marcel Jacob- bass player, (RIP) and brothers- keyboard player and drummer, Jens and Anders Johansson stuck around with us in the parking lot. They were very hungry, so we drove them to Whataburger down the road. We ate in the parking lot as we chatted with the guys. They were cool and funny Swedish guys. Great memories.

Oddly enough my parents introduced me to Yngwie back in 1984 when I was nine. They've heard about this new guitar player and bought me the Rising Force cassette for my birthday. That's great parenting right there! 👍

God damnit! You all are lucky to have had awesome parents. I was born and raised into a cult group and my parents didn't allow me to listen to "secular music", so I wasn't exposed to Malmsteen and Metal until I fought my parents and left my brand of Christianity in 1988. It was on! I got into neo-classical and thrash metal immidiatly! 🤘🏻 🤣

He was definitely a target along with Vai for those indie/alternative guitarists who like to brag about not practicing lol. But Yngwie put it best in his own defense the "How can less be more? more is more".

Tom Abraham - Yngwie’s been in the Zone ever since he came to America. He can brag about his playing, because he can. He’s that good. I think he’s mellowed down though, and has respect for other guitarist as he’s gotten older, IMHO.

I think so too. He's also one of the cleanest most fluid players I've ever heard. I'm glad this guy is making a living with the guitar. At first I thought he was just another player with a youtube channel but the more videos I watched the more I realized he was too damn good and knowledgeable just for this to have been a hobby. Turns out he's a legit professional lol. It'd be a crime if he wasn't.

This is what I like about the guy. He does the perfect amount of talking and playing. He gets right to the point without droning on and on like so many others and when he does talk and break things down it's always interesting. Then you have guys that just shred without getting into details. I wish he would've been my guitar teacher growing up but I kind of consider him to be one now.

David, first time I heard Yngwie was the free floppy 7in disc of Black Star in Guitar Player. As you said, hearing him for the first time was a jaw dropping experience. Seeing him in a small club in 1985 was even more jaw dropping, and by far the loudest experience of my life. He is the OG Shredder, and his bending and vibrato are out of this world. He has been as big an influence on electric guitar as any player.

If there’s a rating problem with YJM, it’s that he’s underrated on tone, vibrato and composition. It’s easy to miss his great riffage when he’s melting your face every 5 seconds. Great pentatonic player as well. The extended version of Making Love is one example.

Here on DAAAVVE TV!!! (David Lee Roth Yankee Rose 🌹 video reference) Lol... Only YOU, my friend could take the sometimes frightening brilliance of YM and bring it to a level where a moderate to excellent guitar player could really get a useful and attainable result!!! And again WITHOUT TALKING DOWN TO OR AT, BUT TALKING "TO" YOUR VIEWERS!... THANKS MAN! The poor guy has had his ups & downs though... My band opened for him on a short two month leg of one of his three state tours here in Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico in like 96 or 98ish... Watching him play every night for those dozen or so shows was mesmerizing to say the least. The low point on that short run was when there was a knock on my hotel room door at 3am-ish. I peaked out the peek hole just in time to see a mop of hair hit my door and fall down. It was Ynwie on the floor with a half drunken bottle of vodka spilling what was left in it on the floor and Ynwie peeing the rest of the bottle out all over himself and the floor... 😟 Although other people were laughing and walking on, and over him in the hall, I felt really bad for him. I got someone to help me get him in the shower, (YES... FULLY DRESSED!) Lol... and then laying him on his bed on top of a couple of garbage bags so he didn't soak the mattress... Bet ya haven't had an Ynwie reply like THAT before... Lol... Anyway, Keep the faith and keep fighting the good fight!!! God bless and take care bro...

I'm 100% with you man. The first time I heard Yngwie I thought it was some kind of trick. Yngwie changed my life. He taught me the importance of hard work and dedication. If one wants to be great, one has to put in the time. Those licks that took so many long hours of (mostly fun) practice to master will always be with me. GREAT VIDEO MAN !!!!! Just a tip for the guys who are learning this stuff, after you get a pattern down, it is OK to watch a movie or two while you are building up speed. Take your time and relax your hand and if you start to feel pain, put the guitar down. If you find your guitar is difficult to play, get it set up. It might not matter, but Yngwie uses light gauge string. Hendrix and VanHalen used/ use light string as well. Have fun.

Thanks for posting this arpeggio lesson as well as mentioning Ron Keel. On a side note - there was a concert years ago in Marquette where Keel opened for Krokus who in turn opened for Kiss. Long story short, we end up at the Holiday Inn partying with Keel/Krokus. Keel had a good guitarist there who was in the movie Wayne's World, but the highlight was partying with Krokus guitarist: Mandy Moore. He had just left arguably the most potential-robbed R&R band of all time: Cobra (with power vocalist/Survivor singer: Jimi Jamison). The best lead I had ever heard up to that time was Cobra/Moore's "Blood On Your Money." That was the song that made me start taking guitar lessons. Cobra's upcoming but unfinished next album had their song "I'm a Fighter." But with Mandy Moore and the bass player (both Swedish) quitting and joining Krokus, the band was dissolved and the song auctioned off. Apparently there was quite a battle with Ted Nugent (washed up) who desperately wanted it but a band called Van Zant won out.

David, funny that you mentioned to not tense up and not hold yourself breath! Those are 2 things I was very guilty of for years and am now very aware of as I am delving deeper into Yngwie’s techniques. Thanks for your invaluable insight mate!

Yngwie wasn’t the first to incorporate Classical into rock. But most either didn’t go as far as he did or it sounded “hokey” when they did it.

I had a Custom Shop Malmsteen Strat from 1987 . He is a true genius . I can only play simple blues . Now I have carpal tunnel syndrome . I sold my Malmsteen Strat .

Any Yngwie video is good enough for me, speciallly those focusing on earlier stuff. I love the way you break it down so anyone can get it. I noticed you didn't play it at blistering speed, yet do to your flawless technique you delivered the goods once more. Please do a Pat Thrall video.

I'm loving this whole Yngwie series. I can't come close but it's so interesting. I bought Yngwie's book Relentless. Haven't started it yet. Anybody read it?

Perfect! that is a great take on Randy and Yngwie... Totally different styles even though they both were inspired by classical music. I miss this old Malmsteen style of playing, I think his best work was in his first few albums including Steeler and Alacatrazz. His phrasing and tone were out of this world. Thank you for posting these lessons I will start studying again as I have been inactive due to a physical limitation with my picking hand (index finger is fused so i cannot bend the middle joint to hold my pick the way i used to) But I am trying to find other ways and i know i will have to incorporate legato into my playing now for sure LOL Just wish I had guitar teacher-therapist! Sometimes I alternate between the thumb and middle finger and sometimes i am able to pick with the thumb and index finger in a certain position but its still not as good as it was before I had this problem and surgery. I love Yngwie's style and tone very much I never outgrew it. Looking forward to more of your amazing lessons!

I missed the kicking the pick part ~ j.k... My room-mate was playing Y.M when i walked in the house and said 'who the f was transposing those classical pieces' ? From that point i knew sh*t was about to change w/the Rock Godz ~ Think of it living in paradise, Maui a little behind because Everything has to come over not recognized because ya have to work like a dog (3 jobs) but every chance you can watch a sunset listening to such virtuosity can be pretty Shweeet ! Please Keep up the Great work + stay healthy (vitamins)☯🎶🎸🌟🌈a big u.s fan Dave🎵🤘🏞😎☇✨☇✨☇✨
