construction of my pond. from july 2004 to present(feb. 07)
i built this pond by hand all by myself(except the bulk of the hole, i used a back hoe i borrowed from work)
costs:
ultraguard liner 20mil 35'x50'@$.36sqft $630
fiber underlayment $324
freight shipped to nearest warehouse $156
sump pump, 3500gph 2"in/outlet around $400 + $20month
filter/skimmer, $399+tx (what a rip-off)
all plumbing, electical wiring, outlets, etc. less than $100
---------------------------------------- ----
things i didn't pay for:
back hoe, to dig the bulk of hole
concrete truck, to speed up water filling
boulders
tri-axle dump truck, to haul boulders
loader, to load dump truck
van, to pick up liner/underlayment
---------------------------------------- ----
the 'almost' completed pond. summer of 2007. **33' long 23' wide 6' deep** and according to pondmarket.com 34000gal adjusted for ledges 30000gal. i had no idea.

I pissed off a world class pond builder when I said you don't have to spend 165 Grand to build a pond! This is just another example of resourcefulness and willingness to get it done. That you do not have to spend an arm and a leg to be happy. Well done!

The CONCRETE (not cement) truck is only to fill water faster, it was not used in building the pond in any way. So your sarcastic humor has no merit. The concrete truck just replaced a simple garden hose. Do you have a garden hose?

Very nice job. I just built a 520 gal pond myself with a flexable linner and that was hard enough work so I can only imagine what it was like for you. I spend about $1200.00 on everything. Since I live in Florida, the most costly part was buying the rocks ($575.00) Since Florida is mostly sand unlike the northeast where I grew up,I couldn't just go to the river and get them myself, I had to buy them at a supply store where they are trucked in from another state. Again, nice job.

Nice. I like that you weren't afraid to go big and used lots of rocks to create a natural effect...not the "ring of rocks" so many ponds have. The bog garden, or what you call "natural filter" at the top is a good thing to have. You need a few more plants, shrubs and aquatic plants tho. And that overgrown hot tub up on the hill has to go. Get an inground.

that was my first time in a backhoe. wasn't getting anywhere with the hoe, so i basically used the front(loader) and kept driving in and out of the pond digging it out until i couldn't drive into the pond safely anymore. i know exactly what you mean and i definitely would do it differently now.

Also, multiple levels promotes multiple temperature zones. Multiple temperature zones promote natural "currents" and that helps the water circulate naturally. And when water is circulating it also helps regulate the temperature over all. Not totally NEEDED but it's good to have if you can.

Well Believe it or not, i installed a pond for my cousins for the trill of it, and added a Ultra-Gard to their pond 30Mil PVC (thicker than yours) and in one year because of the boulders the liner tore in 16 Different place's in less than a year, So i relined it... I bought a 45 Mil EPDM Anjon Pond Liner w/ Lifetime warranty, and paid less than i did for the PVC. Till today No leaks, No fuss, No refilling everyday, No problem!

thanx, i did a lot of work while my back was killing me. i had to roll all boulders from around 50' from the UPPER left side of the pond. if you notice, left of the water fall, the ground drops sharply, that's where i had to avoid losing control of those giant boulders and having them roll in and distroying the pond. it took everything i had to move them a foot let alone stopping them from dropping to fast down that steep slope...

mine's been going now for 5years, no leaks... and as i said, i installed it all by myself, which means a lot of dragging the liner over rocks, gravel, and a lot of sharp stuff. plus the front and back walls of the pond had endless amounts of shall, just have to have a good underlayment. i'm not defending ultraguard, i couldn't care less in what liner to use... as long as it hold water.
