30 06 Test IMR4350 Powder

This is the first video of a new series in which we test a new gun, the 30.06. We will start with IMR 4350 powder for accuracy and low standard deviation data. The powder is paired with the Hornady 168gr BTHP match bullets and Federal's 210 large rifle primers.

IMR 4350 has been My go-to powder for the 30-06 for over 40 years. I bought a 20 lb keg for $150.00 , used it for a lot of cartridges over the years.

Mine has been IMR 4064. 150 gr SSTs over 3000fps. 165gr 2900 fps. Both under 1 MOA if I do my part

A few long range records were set with 4064 in 30-06.

That combo in the 06 is hard to beat. They were made for each other. Kinda like oreos and cold milk!!

I've had some of the same results where two are close and the third is off. I'm convinced that it's the bullet weight and not so much the powder drop. I can get touchie-feelie in the bull with one weight and 2+ MOA with others using a respectable range on the powder. The wider spread is good enough for hunting but I try to get as accurate as I can with what I have without going overboard on cost. KISS principal ................. enjoy

I tested with the IMR4350 with 165gr for my Abolt, a little over an inch. Then, I tried the IMR4064 with Sierra MK 168. I am getting less than an inch.

4350 is fine in 30-06 in a bolt gun. Be careful with it in an M1 Garand. It’s a bit “gassy” and slams the op rod. A better choice for the Garand is 4064. If you can find any.

I found that they make an adjustable gas block thing for the Garand, have you seen or had any experience with that device?

@@thewashingtonreloader I have them in both my Garands. They work ok. But I sold my 1903 several years ago and it’s just been easier to load M2 ball equivalent. I got the gas plugs so I could shoot commercial ammo in a pinch and so I can defeat the gas system to shoot in certain situations where I don’t want to chase the brass. I got mine from Midway. Can’t recall the brand. They work fine. Just fiddly to set up. I keep the GI plug in the buttstock trap just in case.

Had quite a few Ball 30-06 from back in the day 1940's. Corrosive primers, took them appart and recicled bullets. Powder seemed like IMR 4895.- My most accurate hunting reloads in a US 1917 Enfield were with IMR 4350 and 165 Grns Speer Grand Slams

Varget is also recommended. Ive used Varget, imr 4064,and imr 4831 for heavy bullets. Randy Selby swears by Winchester 760,?

If you can find some, H-4350 would be a good test.

@@thewashingtonreloader In fact H-4350 is even better. It's temperature insensitive which makes your loads more stable in any weather situation. 57.5 gr. Behind a 165 accubond, well, let's just say Elk medicine.

Log into Midways an Brownells, and get on the notification list. H4350 became available a week ago. Last year bought Accurate 2700 because available and very close in burning performance to 4350.

It's the first powder I started with back in 2008. Long before I owned a chronograph and could test all these reloading components. It's been in every single hunting round that I've used to harvest an animal up to this date.

Is there a summary of findings as to what you consider best? I’ve got a flip phone to listen to videos. Powder, Charge + bullet seems low to my bad eyes. Don’t let YT moderators rule yr content over quality. God bless you, sir for helping.

I don't have a summary of findings for the 30-06 using this powder yet. I'm still in the middle of the testing. But when I have all the info for this powder I will release a video that covers the testing from start to finish all in one video and I will do one of those videos for each powder and bullet that I test. Why are your charge weights so low. You're about 2 grains low and you're using a powder that is too fast of a burn rate for 168grn bullets. Try H4350 as well as Reloader 22 and even Stabal 6.5. You can use a charge weight of about 59 grains. But work up to it and watch for pressure signs. Re-22 can go as much as 61 to 63grns. I've been a Balastician for over 50+ years. Unfortunately I'm seeing too many people using the wrong powder and charges in their loads. Especially on the 06 with Heavier Bullets. Remember to slowly work up your loads and watch for pressure signs. My charge weights are for my Rifles only so use caution. Every Rifle is different. In my Remington 700 I'm getting over 3000 feet per second with these loads.
