You asked for it, here it is…. Comparison between the 30 Second 270 Freestanding Awning against the Original Ostrichwing 270 Freestanding Awning, both from South Africa.
Which is better?

Hi Phill The 30sec is a Chinese copy of the Ostrich Wing The Ostrich wing is a superior product at a higher price I personally have the 30sec awning which can be deployed in 20 seconds It is still a superior product compared to most others at an affordable price I have been caught out in a thunderstorm at night and ended up destroying one of the arms. It was quickly replaced I worked out it’s safer to fold it up at night (10 secs)and leave it hanging on the side of the vehicle If you expect rain and wind I just throw a tarp over my table and chairs and peg it down Your review is very honest and on point

Hey mate, I have the same awning, regarding the gap at the rear door. All have to do is move the awning more to the front of the vehicle. Regards Adam

There are a few options. The Ostrch wing is one of the strongest, another worth checking is The Bush Company 270XT Awning. I think it might be stronger in the frame, but the canvas is a lot thinner and weaker on the Bush company. And the Bush company is smaller. My opinion, I don’t think there is anything out there stronger than the ostrich wing.

Bush company doesnt need any legs way stronger than anything on the market. 2021 awnings that come with legs are out dated dinosaur technology. Heavy duty with maximum size.. get the bush company 270 xt max, massive coverage, and strong asf.

@@krump743 That was one I was considering. But I got a much better deal on the Ostrichwing and I’m very happy with it. I not seen the XT awning. So I can’t comment much on it such as the canvas used etc. Would love to check one out though. I would not call a 270 degree awning dinosaur era. After all the one you mentioned is also a 270 awning. Your obviously a young fella if you call this a dinosaur. Count your lucky stars you not born in the era where it would take half hour to pitch a tarp and an hour to setup a tent.

@@krump743 Bushcompany awning looks great but has some downsides over this ostrich wing - it doesn't fully cover prado rear door when it's open. Also Fire to Fork had his bushcompany 270 XT get broken in the wind when he left it unattended. Ability to put up a pole or tie down might be useful sometimes.

@@TDubya811 I have a bc xt awning... u definitely can tie it down and u can also add a pole if needed. Let's just say... when u don't have to pay for things with ur own money u tend to not care about ur stuff as much as u wouod if u paid for it with ur own money.

Good comparison guys. Thanks. @FJ Camping, Steven…. Have u thought of simply extending the pop up upright piece slightly, to create a higher peak, to re-tension your older slightly more stretched canvass to prevent pooling? Might that work? Was trying to find $ for OW but 6yrs solid 30 Sec use sounds good value for the cheaper $$

Thanks for the question next time I put the awning up I was gonna show I made up two extra pieces to put on the other arms they pitch the roof up higher makes it a lot tighter and that’s the water run-off pretty easy fix

@@Sawadventures67 thanks for sharing, I’ll watch out for that. I see 30sec have put out a 2.1m 30 sec awning. I like the sound of the lighter weight 21kg but wondered if u have an opinion about the trade off of degree of shelter vs lighter weight with a smaller size than your awning?

Would like to see these with a black cover and not Gray. I'm still worried about the wind and the pooling even though you state it isn't an issue

I've not had issue with pooling. But like you say. I still don't take Chances. At night I peg out the centre of each canvas in between the poles for easy water run off. I use some clamps that someone gave me.

The thing is. The Ostrichwing awning uses the heaviest gauge canvas of any awning I've seen. Hence why it don't stretch like other canvas do

In regards to the 30 second awning it would pool for certain. The canvas on it is not as heavy gauge.

but what is the weight difference thats important ?? and if its lasted 6 years do u need any stronger just interesting ??

Going by specs the weight is similar. On Stephen’s 30 second awning he uses the drop down legs most of the time. It’s rare I use the drop down legs on my Ostrichwing awning.

Hi, I was told it’s made in South Africa. I read your message last night and spent an hour searching online for where the 30 Second awning is made with no luck. All I could find was manufacturer… Unknown on one website. I’m pretty sure it’s from South Africa. Both awnings use Ripblock canvas which is from South Africa. The ripblock canvas on the ostrich wing is much thicker and stronger. I plan to film another video today with finer details comparing the two.

It's made in China. I've got one, it's deff not flimsy. Probably mounted it wrong or what ever it's mounted to is flimsy

It's a Himanka made of 100% wool. I got it from a local disposal camping store.

You need to take into account the style roof racks used and mounting style alot of flex can be in the roof rack bars on there own, but you do seem biased towards your awning.

There’s no doubt the Ostrich Wing is a better awning. You only got to see them side by side. In saying that, the 30 second awning for its price point is a very good awning. Just I would have it pegged out most of the time, where as my awning, most of the time I don’t peg it out.

You can clearly see the quality difference in the 2 awnings. Even old mate with the FJ seems more keen on Phils awning haha
