where i come from they never tell you what's the dress code , but I usually buy wedding outfits that i can use later, i feel terrible if i wear something once specially if it's really cute, so i try to pick outfits i can dress up or down , for example i have a midi pink strappy dress that i can wear with heels and look very elegant and l can wear it with white sneakers and look really casual and cute

Four years ago I was invited to a friend's wedding, and during a city weekend a few months before the wedding, I found a vintage inspired sleeveless dress with a full knee length skirt. The dress was of a bright, but sophisticated, green colour. At the wedding I paired it with a black blazer and black heels, but I've worn it on several occasions since. For my cousin's daughter' confirmation I wore a cardigan over it, and for our constitution day I wore it with a pearl necklace. I've also worn the dress at Christmas parties, as the green is quite festive. So whenever there is a more formal event to go to, I always know what dress to wear, and it only becomes a matter of shoes and accessories to dress it up or down.

Last wedding I attended (2 weeks ago), I wore a top I made a couple of years ago with a big, fresh, bold flower pattern in yellow, cornflower blue, pale pink and forest green, with a floor length drapy skirt in forest green with gold belt (Also homemade). I made this flowery top with a matching pleated midi skirt a couple of years ago for a christening. I have since then worn it in different occasions, switching between the long forest green skirt and the midi flowery skirt, and even changing the top (see my profile pick). I think if you own a formal occasion outfit, having a matching ensemble is really handy in case you go to something where some of the guests have already seen you in your outfit.

I agree with you completely - renting is the best way! One thing it is more cheaper, but the best part is you can every time wear something different whatever it would be without worrying how to clean it and where to keep it and when and where you could wear it again.

Every time I've been invited to a wedding the invitations didn't say what the dress code was but I looked up pictures of the locations to see more or less what the vibe was going to be for the wedding/reception. So the last time I went to a wedding it was going to be at our local church so I knew what was appropriate there but the location of the reception is what helped me make up my mind as for what to wear. It was a lovely rustic setting, a renovated barn with additions made for a ballroom like setting, and a kitchen area for preparing and serving food. I discarded my original thought about renting a long length dress and used a simple midi-length royal blue dress that I already owned that I felt comfortable in. To blend in with the dressed up crowd, I paired it with a chunky rose gold necklace and nude heels. I figured if I was overdressed I could take off the necklace but it turned out to be the perfect outfit for the occasion. The wedding before that, I knew I wasn't going to be able to make it to the ceremony and the reception was going to take place at a community center so I chose to put on a rosy pink top paired with a watercolor-like printed skirt that had the same color along with a bunch of different hues of blue. To dress up the outfit a little I accessorized with a gold necklace that had a small sapphire and put on heels for the beginning then changed into flats for the dancing. I also thought I was going to be a little too dressed up but this outfit also worked out for the occasion. Both weddings happened to take place in the spring. I've never been to a winter wedding but I'd love to know what to wear to one.

Vanessa Kountul Me too! Made me realize, that having a ‚signature style‘ is actually really preferable to always switching it up. If your favorite pieces suit you well, you look more ‚you‘ in them, than in random, fashionable pieces. It’s no coincidence, that ‚cool‘ characters in movies/computer games usually have a very clear style and easily recognizable outfits. They are part of how the character is defined and part of what we like about them.

I agree with your point about owning a gown but I think you can own fancy heels and handbag:) when I purchased those for my own wedding I chose beige and gold -now I can wear it to any wedding:) just heels or just handbag I can also use to spice up my outfit if I go out to a fancy restaurant or similar event. Handbag and shoes make sense because we wil never "grow out" of them:).

Hi! I'm in my late 20s and I have definitely grown out of the idea of buying a new outfit for every single event I attend - for my most recent wedding, I have managed to use a dark floral chiffon midi dress I found on sale at Zara, pairing it with simple leather accessories, a brick red lip, and gold jewellery. It worked, because the evening reception was held in a garden, the print and somewhat Zimmermann-esque aesthetic was late summer-appropriate, and the flowing, midi silhouette with a plunging neckline translated way fancier than one would anticipate for 20 quid! Later on, I wore the same dress on holiday, multiple times, pairing it with white tennis shoes, a leather backpack, and big sunglasses, for a bohemian-chic sightseeing look. Loved it both ways and will definitely wear it next season.

I wore a tan cotton midi wrap dress with a black blazer and heels to the last wedding I attended. I felt a little underdressed but I was comfortable and my feet weren't sore as the heels weren't too high. I have worn the dress on several occasions since, including while on holiday in the south of France and even to work with flats. I don't go to many fancy events so I wanted something that I could wear in my everyday life. I recently bought a gorgeous boho print maxi dress and it is currently at the tailor's being made into a top and a midi skirt. I intend to mix and match the two pieces with other pieces in my current wardrobe for all sorts of occasions. The top can be worn with jeans for a casual look or it could be worn with a floaty midi skirt to a summer wedding or party. And of course the two pieces can be worn together to give the appearance of a smart dress. I am planning on wearing this to my Grandma's 80th birthday party later on this month.

I agree, if it's possible, to plan for your outfit and shop for it well in advance. I have two a-line dresses that I've owned for over five years that I interchange for formal occasions (weddings, graduations, baptisms, etc.) and with a change of shoes and outer layer, like a cardigan or fitted blazer, they always look different. So far, no one has said they've seen the dresses on previous occasions, though I must say that the people attending are rarely the same. I didn't spend a lot of money on the dresses, in fact I got them both on sale for under $50.00 each, but I bought them well before I needed them. They both are flattering in colour and fit, and so long as I don't gain or lose more than fifteen pounds, will remain in my closet for a long time. Great video, as always, Daria

I attended an Italian wedding 3 years ago, which was partly outdoors. I bought a les copains rose printed silk dress in a casual cut, a shirtdress with kimono sleeves to keep it cool in August, and so that I can wear it on date nights afterwards. It is an absoulutly stunning dress which can be casual if worn with flats or dressy with heels and I wear it every summer.

I recently found a gorgeous Romeo Gigli pale gold vintage top made in silk, lined with silk, with amazing slightly architectural details, and though I'd never buy something like that brand new or for a full price I realized it's an amazing occasion wear piece. Combined with simple pants and maybe gold sandals I already have. So I'd definitelly recommend checking second hand stores for gorgeous one of a kind occasion wear for very small price, so it's ready when the occasion arises. Also a nice silk midi dress that can be worn both to work with a blazer and also as occassion wear is a good option because it will be used many times. To my last wedding I wore a black silk jumpsuit and now I see it was pretty wrong, but it was a bit of rock and roll wedding and bride had a purple wedding dress so I guess it's less of a faux pas.
@irairod5160

It's not a faux pas everywhere--it's certainly not where I live--and if it was a rock-and-roll wedding with the bride in an unconventional color, I'm sure you looked very appropriate in your black outfit. Your pale gold vintage silk top sounds scrumptious, I hope you get many, many chances to let it shine!

I bought a simple shift in a year round fabric that had an asymmetrical neckline and modern ruffle detail that I knew would work for a huge range of events. My sister’s wedding was the occasion I bought it for and her request was that we wear colors from the inside of an abalone shell, she’s an environmentalist. I looked for that green-blue color but found nothing. This shift was a silver-gold-sand color and several sizes too big. My experience in theatre taught me that the simple lines of the dress would make tailoring it easy. The dress was normally several hundred dollars, marked down to $49. I was thrilled. At checkout it rang up at $11 due to a percentage off clearance sale I was unaware of. $20 of tailoring and a good dry clean at $4 made this a steal at $35! I looked great in the photos with all those colors, it wasn’t flashy at all, and I have worn it a few times a year since then to theatrical events, showers, reunions, Christmas parties, and a ball. I already had metallic bronze strappy sandals in a classic style, a wrap, and blue-green stone jewelry that fit the theme. Success! I would only add that some of us need at least a tiny formal capsule if we are involved in the arts, some type of fundraising or charity work, or community events of this type many times a year. These things are not always job related.

I have only been to 3 weddings in my life and am happy about my outfits, never purchased anything specifically for the wedding and managed to just incorporate items i already owned. I did go more on the casual side, seeing i was only in my late teens or early twenties. For the first wedding i wore a white shirt (thrifted) tucked into a flowy colourful bold pattern viscose squort (from forever 21 which i bought 8 years ago before i was aware about sustainable fashion) with skin tone ballerina flats and a very elegant vintage navy leather bag with some metallic details. I have worn the flats and the shirt until they tore to pieces and am still wearing the other items. The second wedding i wore a skirt i upcycled from a beautiful print scarf (hand me down) and a black open back top i altered myself for the church part but i didn't feel so comfortable in the outfit so i ended up changing into a red kimono dress (thrifted) with a silk belt and beautiful embroidery details around the bottom hem and the neckline. I wore black wedge sandals with both outfits. I passed on the skirt since because it wasn't so much my style and the wedges also, i still have the kimono dress but in my sewing drawer because i want to make alterations to it and somehow my black open back top went missing, to this day I'm convinced someone borrowed it because it was so beautiful and never gave it back. For the third wedding for the city hall part i wore a pink, purple, blue patterned short dress with long sleeves (keeping the ballance, from H&M, again bought about 7 years ago), tights and black polished chelsea boot (they are sooo beautiful but the worst quality and after i bought them 5 years ago, i decided never to buy cheap bad quality shoes again, still wearing them though because i already have them and they are beautiful) with an elegant black leather bag (grandma hand me down). I changed into a white jersey dress for the forest pic nic afterwards, however the dress has a strong floral pattern with strong red and green colours so its not a problem, the bride came in a short pink dress and jeans jacket and we all wore sneakers. And i wore the dress again and again and even lent it to my sister. I never wear make up in my day to day life but for special events i often do so people immediately assume I'm all fancy and dressed up when they see me with eyeliner, mascara and lipstick haha the other day i wore make up to work and everybody was asking me whats wrong and if im alright and some friends even asked if they could take a photo, it was literally just mascara and mat lip gloss.

the last wedding i attended had “safari“ as their specific theme for the dress code. i wore a long tiered khaki cotton skirt i wear all the time during summer and a simple beige short-sleeved silk blouse along with hiking shoes lol. all other weddings, i wore my “prom“ dress, a red midi dress with pretty sleeve details, each time with different shoes/accessories :) this one dress can serve me many more times! unless i gain more weight haha

Last wedding was a family wedding in which the bride asked us to dress 'South Indian' to honour her heritage. I would have preferred to wear a sari but since there were not any aunties available to help me pin it, I chose a modern salwaar-style top and pants in orange. Like most of my formal wear, I've had it for years, have worn it for gigs and other parties, and I got it cleaned and put it in storage for the next fancy occasion.

I recently attended an evening wedding; I am the father-of-the-bride's partner, so I wanted to get it right! I have a difficult time with clothing. I ordered two dresses online: a beautiful navy dress with a long/short hem that didn't fit! and a silver-knee length that didn't work either (lucky because the moms wore silver and gray, respectively). I returned both those dresses and bought a red lace midi-length dress locally. It needed to be altered -- and then the alterations needed to be re-done. Then I found the store had left a metal-detector tag on the dress! After all that, I received many compliments on my dress, which I paired with black sling backs and a black evening bag loaned to me by my partner's oldest daughter, since I'd left mine at home! in the rush to get out the door. Buying evening clothes is not easy! I would recommend giving oneself a lot of time.

I‘m glad, you included jumpsuits. I love them, personally...and find them easy to ‚dress up‘ with jewelry and a nice belt and heels. But I wasn’t sure, if they would be appropriate for an occasion, where you would usually wear an cocktail/evening dress. I don’t go to fancy events very often, which makes it extra hard to figure out, what is expected. And I feel terribly self conscious about straight out asking somehow. Like I‘m the only guest, who isn’t sophisticated enough, to know such things 😎

I find jumpsuits cumbersome, Rara Avis, but I adore matching separates, which give a similar look. You are correct--with good accessories, especially glittery or metallic shoes, a jumpsuit made of a refined fabric would be appropriate to wear to most evening occasions, except to something that is strictly black tie, and never for white tie (although those are so rare!) I find wide-leg pants particularly fetching for an evening event, especially if they are silk- or chiffon-like. Do NOT ever feel self-conscious about asking for the overall "vibe" the bride would like to see on her day. It would be worse to show up in something totally out of sync. If you don't want to ask the bride herself, ask other ladies who have been invited. "I'm debating between 2 outfits. What are you wearing?" That way you won't feel you're giving the impression that you're unsophisticated :-) :-) :-) I go to many fancy events, so over many years have carefully built up a small selection of separates that I mix and match, for example: a midnight blue velvet floor-length skirt, a dark blue 3/4 sleeve lace top, blue and gold printed "silk" sleeveless top, palazzo pants in dark blue chiffon, a satiny gold bustier top with matching jacket, a navy blue midi-length silk slip dress, a tea-length floral skirt, a navy knee-length lace pencil skirt, and a short sleeved gold-beaded drape-y top. I wear the darker pieces together during the colder months, and in spring and summer, I lighten the look with creams, pinks, oceanic blue-greens, and floral tops. I'm sharing these to give you some ideas--even if you don't go to formal events often, having a handful or pieces that can be remixed will give you the confidence of knowing, "I do have something to wear." Start with something that's not "too" fancy and can be paired with different jackets and tops--like a lace pencil skirt in a dark color or a silk sheath dress. Either would work for a church event, a graduation, a theater night, a conference, and cocktails at a friend's house over Xmas. Invest in a pair of metallic strappy sandals and, if they strike your fancy, a pair of satin sling backs. I find those two styles of shoes make everything look a bit more special. (PS--I chose blue because it can be used for black tie events in winter, but also for summer...other colors I find equally versatile are greens, from deep forest to emerald to lime, and varying shades of blue-tinged reds, from lilac to magenta to mulberry to ruby to wine to bishop's purple.) Wishing you many happy invitations! :-) :-) :-) :-) Oh! One last tip: look for evening wear on sale after prom and wedding seasons, and at thrift stores year 'round!

What a fun conversation! Last summer I attended a very casual family wedding, wearing chartreuse culottes and a white t-shirt with ruffled sleeve detail, with flat sandals. I felt comfortable, and like myself, it was so much easier to dress for that casual wedding than for the more "traditional" weddings I'd attended in the past!

As always a great video. Personally I prefer more formal weddings, as I wear fancy clothes every day to work and don't feel like I've dressed up otherwise. I buy all my outfits, it never occurred to my to rent. Will have a look at that option next time. Last wedding i bought a Valentino pink pale dress with long arms and high neck and a beautiful detailed belt. Paired it with red lips and shoes. It was last November, and though I haven't worn it since, I look forward to next possible opportunity.

As I am a wedding goer (at least 3 weddings/year in the last 10 years) I have accumulated a number of dresses that I reuse. Most don't give a dress code so it depends mostly in the location. I have friends that try to dress differently to each wedding, but I realised that nobody really cared if I wore the same dress at one or at 5 weddings. I am not a very fashionable person, so my luck, if we can call it so, is that my weight fluctuates, so I might wear this year some dresses that I wore 5 years ago.

i made the mistake of wearing something similar to the bridesmaids, i didn't know what they will wear but i could have guessed since the bride was a friend. i also bought the dress a year in advance because i thought it would be perfect when i saw it in a shop. the bride's favorite color was purple and i found a deep purple satin cocktail dress and i bought it. the bridesmaids turned out to wear very similar ones. since time has passed and i put on the infamous freshmen 15 the dress was a bit small and i didn't try it on before the event so there was no time to get another one. oh well :)) but this was 9 years ago, i learned a lot since :)) last time, i was a bridesmaid and i received the dress from the bride but i won't wear it again because it just screams "bridesmaid". it's an infinity dress, made of that stretchy synthetic material, on size fits all situation. the colour is a deeper wine and i like it but i don't know what to do with it, I'm worried the bride will feel hurt if i give it away. in my country it's not really a rule to not wear black, I see people wear black all the time, i don't think it's a big deal since everyone is used to it. I've also seen some people wear white but that annoys me, at one wedding the bride's sister in law wore a white lace fitted dress and i thought it was a bit rude.

Brilliant, life-saving video! I’m a environmentally-drive konmari minimalist who only wears black and white and this question drives me to minor panic spirals every time a wedding invite comes around. (Also has something to do with gender fragility in the region of the US where I grew up.) Your clear guidelines and exhortation to rent are refreshing and clear! I will rent! The last wedding I went to, I wore a metallic taupe velvet fitted turtleneck (thrifted in a panic a week before the wedding) with a vintage black knit slim maxi skirt, plus black Chelsea boots. It sounds a little wild when I describe it like that, but I promise the effect was very Olsen twins (I hope), and I managed to be very minimal but fancy. Since then, I haven’t worn the turtleneck. I likely won’t wear it again until another wedding.

I wore an old cocktail dress I had in my closet. It was a 4 year old dress which I sold in consignment after because it was a bit tight, I found. In the past, I tend to wear a part of tailored trousers or pencil skirt I typically wear to work with a very fancy blouse. The blouse I buy new but will definitely wear again with other items in my wardrobe. I prefer wearing separate as I can reuse the pieces in my wardrobe. The fancy top can be worn with jeans for a night out for cocktails or a silk top can be worn with a blazer to work.

To my last wedding I wore a nice flowery skirt, simple blouse and my work ballerina flats. I use blouse and flats to work, sadly skirt I did not think through as well (I could go for flowery pencil and then I could wear it to work but I chose flared, bad idea) so I donated it to a local charity shop. But I learned:). I am going to a wedding again soon and I will wear my own wedding sandals and handbag and a red cocktail dress I already own for few years and intend to keep for a long time;) (could not wear it last time as it was not conservative enough for a type of wedding).

I bought a burgundy cocktail dress for a wedding 5 years ago. To be honest I don't wear it often during the year, usually only 2-3 times. It's quite formal so it gets worn to the opera, business events, theatre or weddings. Although I'm rewearing the same outfit, I always get compliments. This one dress is enough for my current lifestyle. :)

I only attended one wedding at a 'conscious' age. It was 3 years ago. Being a teen I of course didn't have much fancy stuff, the fanciest thing I had was a white dress with red flowers that came to above the knee, so I bought another dress: a vintage-inspired midi dress with big flowers on it. A very bisy pattern in primarily teal and purple. Besides the dress actually being white, the busy pattern made it look teal. Since then, I have worn it..10 times? Because it's so overly busy, I kinda feel like a clown with it. The heels I bought with it I don't wear, either, as they're thin heels (which I can't walk on) and a size too big, I have a EU 35 in some types of shoes/brands. A waste of money in a way but yeah...Shit happens. I barely figured out my style back then, as a 15-year old.

I have 4 weddings this year. 1 of my dresses I bought new & plan to rewear it again, 2 of the dresses I bought secondhand and may sell back to the store when I'm done with them, and 1 dress I already had in my closet.

I love going to fancy dates with my fiancee and because of that I have two beautiful evening dresses. One of them is my satin emerald green dress from 80s that I wore on my prom, second one is my mothers old dress that I adjusted to my size. Both of them fit my retro style and I cherish them very much. I love wearing this green one on Christmas also because of the colour.

I have basically two wedding dresses - both are knee length, one is with long sleeves so it's better for colder months, and the second one is with short sleeve, and I have been wearing them for all the weddings I have attended since 5 years! I made one mistake with buying overly high heels which I don't wear at all, but in the same time I have one pair of sandals on a short heel which are great for dancing :)

Some years ago, I worked for an arts non-profit and needed special occasion outfits for fundraising galas, so most of my outfits could do double-duty when I got wedding invitations. I'd wear a dress to several events before I resold it on ebay. Now, if I need something more fancy, it's easy to rent.

I have a wedding next year, and its in the summer. I don't really remember when I wore a dress, but would like to try again. Im very conservative though. So its been a struggle to find one. I know its the summer but the heat doesn't really bother me. Its really early to see if I will find the right dress. if not Ill just get a nice jump suit probably.

That's terrifying when I think that I used to have a new dress for every wedding I came for... But it's okay when I think usually that happend when I was a preteen/teenager, when my body was changing a lot. Nevertheless, I was invited for a wedding 1,5 years ago, as an adult and... I went shopping for a gown. And heels (I had another pair, but it was a little too big for me, so I went straight for more comfortable ones). But I borrowed a biker jacket from my friend for this outfit :). Nowadays, when I'm much more into capsule wardrobe I wouldn't buy something new for such occasion. I kept the dress - it's long, emerald green and beautiful; I remember a little girl, who said I look like a princess when I was trying it at the shop :) - and shoes, and I guess I don't mind if I wore it more often. I also realised that now for weddings or something I could wear my long black dress with a blue jacket (which are in my "formal" capsule wardrobe) or black-gold long skirt with yellowish blouse (which I found 2 years ago at a thrift shop, when I was looking for something for playing Belle from 'Beauty and the Beast' in a LARP) or maybe with white blouse (also from my formal capsule). Or my long lilac circle skirt (from my summer capsule) with a nice blouse and maybe my boho corset (when it was appropriate). Or a nice blouse with a black pencil skirt for dressy casual. Now I have so many possibilities and no occasions!

Hello Daria! You have a very impressive fashion knowledge, so big thank you for sharing it here with us! :) I was wondering if you could do a video about swimsuits brands, which can be eco friendly, ethical, but also could last for years? Or if not a video if you could answer the question because it's something I am stuck on...:)

I bought a pale sage green dress in broderie angleise with 3/4 sleeves that falls to lower calf and then today my fella told me I'm invited to his coworker's summery semi-casual reception (they're going to the registary office/Courthouse instead of any big wedding) - for once I actually have the perfect outfit.

In Israel there's no dress code for weddings, no bridesmaids, and it's extremely accepted to wear black to a wedding. I guess everything is local dependent :)

Is it bad to wear black to a black tie wedding? I wore a black floor length gown to an outdoor black tie optional wedding last year. It seemed to be okay, but I can't remember how many other women wore black. I am about to go to another wedding this Sunday and I was considering wearing the same dress. My other option is a blue skirt with a black blouse. The dress code was not written on the invitation.

I am 77 years old and in August I am attending my son's gay wedding. He doesn't want anybody dressed in black, he wants lively colours, of course. His brother, wife and daughters are going dressed in pink and I want to go along those lines. Do you have any suggestions? I am a small woman in size, 5.3" tall. I prefer to wear flat shoes. Also, I would prefer a one piece dress elegant but casual. Will you assist me, please?
