One thing to note about the rear spacing of the frame. Increasing the width is called "cold setting" and it's a very common thing to do on steel frames. However, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO THIS if you have an aluminium frame. Then again, aluminium frames usually come in more modern sizes.
@tmayberry7559
@tmayberry7559 2 жыл бұрын
I have a Schwinn Le tour bicycle from 1974 the rear spacing is 126 and it only takes 27-in Wheels I want to know how do you cold set the front fork or should I replace the front fork with a fork that will take a 700c wheel
@johnsmithers284
@johnsmithers284 Жыл бұрын
@@tmayberry7559 you don't need to do anything to the front fork. It's been 100mm in the front since at least the 60s. If you want to be lazy you can just slip the rear wheel in the rear dropouts since you are going from 126 to 130. Some people would say to do it properly and cold set + straighten dropouts but it's worked for me in the year since I went from 7 to 8 speed.

I see a number of dangers....but that's part of the fun. Not fixing the front axel all the way into the dropout is dangerous as shit. Not allowing the brakes enough room to naturally clear debris is a recipe for disaster, and so on and so on. I've done some ridiculous conversions/ customizations that could have easily got me killed. But man were they cool!

Nice video, but can ypu explain a little more some tricks? Where did you find this nice vintage tape? And how did you put more gears on the rear wheel? I'm interested since I have to do the same job. And...the original lever for change the gears was on the frame? How you extended on the bar? Thanks!;)
@Armin_27
@Armin_27 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Carlo, thank you! :) Sure i can! So the vintage Bar Tape from Brooks i found on bike-components.de but i´m sure you can find it elsewhere as well. The original wheels i had to change to newer ones to get a freehub with a Cassette working. Although you can change hubs on wheels, it wasn´t really worth it. No, the retro thumb shifter i bought for this bike, it was not on the frame. I just had to see if the shifter would go on the handlebars before making the video. There are some "Frame holder pieces" from Shimano that you put in place where the original shifter/lever was. This way you can prolong the cables and put shifters on the bars. ;) Hope that helps. Greetings, Armin :)

I have to say that I don't like to see a classic bike of this quality get frankenbiked. Creeps me out. A couple of points: you can cold-set a steel frame. (NOT ALUMINUM) I had a frame-maker cold-set a couple from 120 to 126 so they could mount vintage road hubs. (Some mechanics will refuse to do it, so it's NOT a casual thing.) But, I would not use your method. If I did, I would hang the frame afterwards and "string" it up in order to measure everything and find out if the frame is aligned. You spread the stays, but I didn't see you setting the drop outs. A lot of vintage frames need the dropouts adjusted, even if the stays have never been cold-set. If you cold set, you can be sure the dropouts will NOT be true vertical, unless it's by some freak accident. The professional tool is a set of bells, but you can DIY bodge something that will get you close. Well it's your bike. I'd loved to have it the way it was. I'm a fan of '531' and vintage '105'.
