I have had chronic anemia since my teens due to heavy periods and was repeatedly told to take iron pills which constipated me. When I went through menopause I assumed it would disappear. Never went away. I became a vegan at 55 years old and now my iron levels are normal! No one ever told me to eat plant based to cure me. Doctors told me to eat steaks and peanut butter! Crazy. Unexpected results. Thank you!

Frankly, I think Barnard throws around the "v" word too easily. Veganism is not a diet. His clear bias toward veganism (ostensibly as a means to ideal human health) is a source of constant annoyance for me. The diet optimal for human health, vegan or not, is a WFPB diet; and Barnard constantly and subtly conflates veganism with health. That's his personal bias talking, and I see him more as a vegan activist first, and a human health advocate second. The data we have, says that about 7% of calories could come from unprocessed animal foods without causing harm, and that it's the ultra processed foods and the overall excess of calories that are the problem. This has nothing to do with whether a person is vegan or not. We vegans should always speak very clearly, to make a distinction between what's ideal for human health (not necessarily vegan) and what's best for the animals and the planet (veganism.) Additionally, we vegans, paleo diet proponents, carnivores, keto advocates, and everyone else (I'm vegan) should be all fighting to get CAFOS made illegal.

6:13 Dr. Barnard's spitting truth. I kept telling my parents - it doesn't matter taht I'm young - I can be unhealthy when I'm young - pay now with being healthy and not liking it or pay later when you're forced to eat healthy and not liking it but also being in bad health.

I quit smoking a few decades ago and I'm thankful for the message and public campaign that was spread long ago that helped many people quit. I also am thankful for the medical treatments for addiction which are powerful. It took me a couple decades to then accept and implement the whole food-plant based diet.

if youre reading this right now i hope you beat your addiction to the unhealthhy foods/sugar/alcohol/stuff/whatever you are struggling to deal with. you deserve a healthy and long life. i know you will be able to be free from all the junk and toxic stuff in your body. you will form life long habits and become a healthy machine thats always full of energy and life and pure happiness! keep going and dont give up

I totally recommend Your Body In Balance... It transformed my life... My menopause symptoms stopped... I'm back in love with food and enjoy having full healthy plates of food and still slowly losing weight... Previously it felt like all I had to do was look at food and I would put on weight.... I'm happier, healthier and I love exploring healthy food choices. I am hot flashes free... Thanks SO much to the Exam Room ❤️

I had given up being vegan and or WFPB because the recipes were so boring. I dreaded every meal. I started watching Will Yeung Asian plant based cooking show and it changed everything for me. I love his recipes. I even bought his books.

From my perspective as a dietitian, I see whether someone is vegan or not, as a distant second to how much processed food a person eats. It's FAR more impactful to health to cut all the processed junk first, then slowly transition to a fully plant-based diet. I would much rather eat an unprocessed omnivorous diet, than a processed food vegan diet. Now, for animal welfare considerations, yes; I'm vegan and you should be too, if you can. But first things first, please! Get that processed junk out of your life, for health, TODAY!

I've been vegan for 4.5 years and still don't like those - well maybe cauliflower a little more. I don't like cultivated crops or buying from a grocery store - real good tasting foods are what people consider weeds in a backyard - foraged edible plants. We lost our tastes, textures, etc. to domesticate - and you can tell!

Hello Chuck, can you get a gastroenterologist to talk about gastroparesis and severe gut dysmotility? I can't find anything on the website of the Physicians Committee about it. I know it's not a widespread condition but it is growing and I encounter it in my work. According to Dr. Fuhrman, it is linked to the standard western diet. I would like to hear how a doctor from the Physicians Committee would treat this patient group.

As regards sodium, make sure that none of your medications contain sodium either, e.g. soluble paracetamol/acetaminophen. Studies have suggested that the amount of sodium in effervescent tablets can raise blood pressure substantially in some people. The box should say if the medication contains sodium. It's a substantial source of sodium that is easy to overlook.

teenage years are really the hardest on health - I would have to agree with these statistics. If we look at marketing, laws, and schooling during teenage years vs what our bodies need - they're really opposite each other. So health really deteriorates then. It's only those who make it out of that that start improving their health. The issue is that you're improving it from a low point - so you never really recover the damage done during teenage (and even childhood) years - so that's why I feel these numbers are just so skewed. 6:00 - I wish I saw what the numbers look like if there wasn't such a high dropoff of health to recover from.

Dr I m from India, having diabetic for 8 years. After listening about whole plant diet I started that for 8 month approx but my HbA1c not dropped even it remained 8.2

I left India about 40 years ago, and at that time people were mostly vegetarian, and not too much of junk was food available. We were all (friends in my generation) at quite healthy weight. Now when I go back and stay in a hotel near an international airport (to transfer to a domestic flight the next day), I see all kinds of junk food (along with the traditional healthy food) at a vegetarian buffet restaurant in the hotel. I just go the traditional food stations, but I see kids crowding around junk food stations. I noticed that all these kids are overweight. I felt bad and thought that it was irresponsible of their parents not to direct them to healthy food options.

I became a vegan last year and lasted for 18 months. I lost so much weight and musules as I didn't take enough calories in. I worked out so much and have a small stomach and can't have a big meal. Recently I have been eating eggs and chicken to get more protein. I want to go back to vegan again, but how can I take enough calories (2200 as advised by the nutrition report)? Appreciate your help!

Conundrum: 2 1/2 years of aromatase inhibitor to lower estrogen (ER/PR+) lead to osteoporosis despite WFPB, D3,K2,and Mg. 2 1/2 years aromatase inhibitor yet to go, but it’s important to regain bone health, for knee replacement. Best way?

I'm not a Dr but hear the WFPB Drs ALWAYS saying weight bearing exercise like walking...jumping...jogging..or lifting weights is the most effective help for building bone...osteoporosis and osteopaenia can both be reversed but it takes these exercises to do it.. plus wfpb diet of course

You're in a tough spot. You'd have to stop this drug and start consuming phytoestrogens, because low to no estrogen means bone loss. I feel phytoestrogens from plants are protective. Estrogen from animal foods are not. Plus, animal foods are highly acidic, which robs the body of alkaline minerals, especially calcium and can lead to osteoporosis. 😐

That's because it was made for colleges and hospitals mainly. Unfortunately, it's harder to sell oil-free food to the mainstream than it is to get them to eat vegan.

I am 67 and my skin is becoming very fragile. I am WFPB and very healthy. Is there a supplement or food group that would help my skin integrity. My mother also had fragile skin and would get a skin tear extremely easily.

yes it is, meat and cheese = saturated fat (cardiovascular disease), trans fat (cardiovascular disease), cholesterol (diabetes), hormones, antibiotic, virus (herpesvirus,), bacteria (Staphylococcus , ecoli, salmonella, etc.), bccaa (diabetes), trimethylamine oxide (cancer), nitrite (cancer), phosphate , high methionine (toxic sulfur-containing amino acids), renal acid load, AGEs advanced glycation end products , secondary bile acids (cancer), hydrogen sulfide (putrefaction : UC, crohn), endotoxins (inflammation), ferrotoxicity (too much heme iron = more cancer), persistant organic pollutants (pops), Neu5GC (inflammation, autoimmune D ), nitrosamines, PhIP heterocyclic amines (HCAs) in cooked meat (carcinogen), Arachidonic acid (inflamation, pro-algesic, etc.), endotoxemia etc... processed meat is a certain group 1 carcinogen (the worst) alongside plutonium and asbestos in my op meat is just good in survival mode short term if you have no other option

Unfortunately, Japan have been eating more meat and cheese more than ever. I've watch them go from veggies and some fish to meat, egg, dairy and cheese. A lot of French food and other countries the media have been promoting 😢

I love Vietnamese food! I’m a bit surprised though because they do seem to eat a lot of meat. I’ve been watching YT videos from a woman in Japan. She uses a LOT of eggs and seafood too, as well as some meat but I was shocked at how many eggs she uses.

It's the 21st Century, and everyone everywhere can get as much of anything they want. 100 years ago, it was NOT like that. I guarantee that back then, the Vietnamese were eating some meat, but it was very little, and it wasn't every day!

I have a question, my husband and I both went wfpb 1-1/2 years ago and feel great, but my husband has lost weight that he doesn’t need to lose since being on the diet, he is 5’10” and went below 150lbs. Is the only way to get him to gain weight to have him eat more nuts seeds avacado peanut butter etc?

I'm sorry for your loss. On average I think people gain many years of life from quitting and he may have, also. The way science works unfortunately we'll never know for certain.

If I had a whole fridge full of meat - if I wasn't on the brink of a health crisis, I would likely bring one vegan nutritional equivalent for every meat slab I would've replaced when I eat them. So I would just eat up what I have - I wouldn't let it go to waste. I wouldn't feel it makes you any less of a vegan than before - as you didn't know better - so it's not your fault. If you can give it away, even better - but then you're just putting your problems onto others. If you put it in the landfill, taht's bad too - as then the landfill jobs wouldn't be vegan anymore - so you just have to take responsibility for one's own actions and deal with the consequences until all the meat's gone.

There's no reason to completely stop eating meat, other than the ethical concern for animal welfare. I'm vegan, but I can't sit here and tell you that one 6 ounce serving of meat per week is going to harm you in any way, because it won't. As long as you don't eat it too often, and avoid processed foods largely all the time, a steak or two per month will not harm you.

@@peter5.056 no worries - I'll let you know. So if you watch Dr. Barnard's videos more, you'll see him and other cardiologists believe moderation is deadly. One of them actually said it was moderation of meat intakes - like the once per week - as you said - actually killed someone - who was deemed 'healthy' too. The reason is that it's still deadly from the cholesterol, carcinogens, etc. and these accumulate over time until the damage becomes apparent in the form of artery clogging, cancer, etc. It's like smoking a pack of cigarettes each week - is moderation healthy tthere? Or drinking a poison in a small dose once per week? Time to get with the times!

health is only one aspect of life though - if you don't want to preserve the body you have now, you might want to take risks on health to become a better person where you'd want to preserve it. Same with having a healthy body that's nice - if it's so nice, why do people trash it up like it's worthless 6:18 when it's something really valuable just because it has value? I don't get the logic my parents have that most people have (or had).

@@sudd3660 To be fair a great deal of what is given to food banks is heavily processed and could be considered 'not food', but it's all the people will accept. I worked at a center that provided meals and the general public has their expectations, but I think it is definitely possible to make completely healthy dishes that are so tasty they would actually be accepted by the general public. It could be argued that the homeless and vulnerable would benefit the most from healthy diets.

I guess you guys never heard “low Carb”. Fruits for diabetics? You gotta be kidding. If he was my doctor then i will be medicated the rest of my life.

No they've heard of it but it doesn't solve the problem. Carbohydrate intolerance is a symptom of diabetes, not the cause. They're all about treating the actual cause

My Mom was Type 1 diabetic for 79 years. Yep, she ate fruit, at least a serving or two per day. Although everyone is different.
