300 Blackout is a cool concept, but I've found myself wondering, does anyone in real world applications use it? And does anyone even care about 300 blackout? In today's video, we break down what is is and the pros and cons of using it.

I'll out myself. I am formerly the head armorer from BAD that developed the Silent Professionals. I left the company last May before this gun was built, but before leaving, I purchased the components from BAD and built one for myself. The only two components I did not use from BAD were the bolt carrier and barrel because I knew they were out of spec. Mine uses a 7.5" Faxon with a 0.096 gas port and a nickle boron coated Aero Precision BCG. It runs both supers and subs unsuppressed like a sewing machine. The folks left at BAD had no idea how to put these together. The owners didn't think they were losing much when I quit (six other people followed me). The owners were also never that involved or interested in the actual scientific process of how to make these run. They just wanted to sell cool looking product and hoped the price of entry would keep numbers low enough to not have customer complaints since they'd sit in a safe rather than actually get used. They were more worried about custom paint jobs for foreign clients than actually getting their domestic demand and production correct with in spec quality components. I left, and I'm happier for it.

The real magic of 300blk is not in the subsonics. Admittedly its cool being super quiet and it does present an improvement over 9mm, but the supersonics are really special if you do the math. Out of a 5.5 inch barrel with 125 grain 300blk you're getting almost 900 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle. This is slightly more than the energy from a 10.3 MK18 with 55 grain but, given the relatively high BC of that .30 cal V-MAX bullet, that energy persists out to 300 yards. All of that and its a smaller lighter weapon with roughly half the barrel length of a MK18 and muzzle energy similar to 44mag point blank. All thanks to supersonic 300blk.

I use 300 BLK. Before this recent ammo craziness, I argued 300 BLK was the most versatile carbine round for those that didn't load their own ammo ( a few wildcats do a little better ). Yes, BLK ammo was a little pricier, but you could get 110gr varmint loads, 123 and 150gr plinking loads, 200 - 220gr subsonic plinking loads, and even 190 - 220 gr subsonic defensive loads. 300 BLK is good enough ( not always great ) for anything 0 - 200 yards, even up to medium game. When subsonic, aside from hitting harder than pistol rounds, it also carries significantly farther. A 200 gr fired at 1000 fps hits harder at 100 yards than 9mm or .45 do at the muzzle, and has half the drop. And I think it's a shame so many focus only on its subsonic use. A 110 gr V-Max at 2300 fps is a mean little bugger. It suffers a bit from people that buy too much into the hype, thinking it can do ANYTHING ( and you can't totally fault them with the marketing hype to match ). And ammo cost will sadly stay high for a while. But if flexibility and versatility is important to you, or if you can't afford to have a bunch of specialty rifles, and if you don't shoot past 300 yards, there aren't a lot of options that can do more things.

There is a guy on youtube shooting a sonic 300BLK out WAY friggin' past 200 (600) yards and hitting steel. Subs are 200, beyond that not pretty but that's to be expected. I haven't had any of my 300's out to the range since BC, before covid. My last build was a 10.5", sadly residing in a state that is very much against firearms raises a few issues. FGN

in subsonic, 300b is a cqb gun. combined with a suppressor, it is one of the best home defence options you could choose. The option to swap a mag and extend your range to 300, or, get a higher energy round, makes it extremally versatile, and one thing that you didn't touch on, is that the round was developed to achieve optimal ballistics in a 8.75 inch barrel, so it runs out of a short barrel far far better than 5.56 does. In a defensive situation, it would be pritty difficult to explain why you were taking shots at someone at 300 yards away, so if we are being honest with ourselves about the most likely ranges in a home defense situation, its going to be 30 yards and in (most commonly 7-15 ft). In these ranges, indoors where concussion off walls is a thing, and ear drums exist, 300b is outstanding. Also, even if you dumped a whole mag into an intruder, i don't think anyone would be all that upset about the 30 bucks worth of ammo at that point, so the cost of ammo for home defence isn't really a consideration. My 9 mill defensive ammo is over a buck a round as well. As for range ammo, even with current ammo prices, its available for around 65 cent a pull, with 556 being around 30c a pull currently. And of course, if you load your own ammo, you can decrease this cost, though that is clearly less common. As for training, since you are using an AR lower with most systems, you have the option to run a second matching upper chambered in 5.56, or even 22lr to get practice with the manual of arms in at a less expensive rate, and though supersonic 300b does recoil a bit harder than 5.56, the subs are quite soft shooting so i don't think recoil management and practice are significantly different in this equation (at least not enough that practice with a 5.56 upper would not be applicable) As for hunting, Supersonic 300b is a superior round to 5.56 inside of 300 yards, where most hunters are taking shots, and infact, many states ban the use of 5.56 on dear sized game and up because of the lack of stopping power. (yes i am aware that you COULD kill a dear with 22lr if you had superb shot placement but that's neither realistic for most shooters, nor optimal). At any rate, its not a replacement for 5.56 or 7.62 but it is an excellent round that serves a needed purpose - hearing safe close quarters round that can, with a supersonic mag swap, be extended out to range, or used to hunt.

300 definitely has its place. 8" suppressed 300 is my primary home defense. I aimed to build something with stopping power while maintaining my audible awareness. People often overlook how important your hearing is in a bad situation. You need to be able to communicate with your family and hear where the intruders are, all while dealing with extreme stress. If you try to let off one of these platforms in your hallway unsuppressed, you can say goodbye to one of your most important senses.

@armeddiver
@armeddiver 11 ай бұрын
@@WheresTheAnyKey1 This is just [my] opinion based on [my] personal testing and research, and is not advise or anything else. In my opinion a 220 gr VMax 300 BLK bullet is less likely to over penetrate because of the immediate expansion upon impact and the fragmentation of the bullet as it passes through material. From the research I have done, the rounds with the greatest harm of over penetration are FMJ and TMJ bullets. A 300 BLK 110gr FMJ or TMJ bullet will have significant over penetration and in my opinion should never be used any kind of home defense weapon.

To the point made, ballistics are great for a home defense/explain to a court why you were taking a self defense shot past 100 yards type PDW in comparison to short barreled 5.56 Subs I rarely find under $1/rd but I do get some decent supers for ~0.60 a rd from LAX, AAC, and freedom munitions.

I live on 5 acres. My 300 Blkout pistols and AR platforms have 300 blkout uppers and everything is zeroed to 100 m which equals the general perimeter of my property. The beauty of 300 Blkout was that anything I had collected , magazines, lowers, bolt carriers etc easily accept the round and because of the large variety of rounds , I can pick different magazines which are all identified with specific markings for sub, tracer, super and black tip. This caliber does everything I need for perimeter security here in the forest and at 100 m it has a very tight group. I shoot it in my backyard with my aac can and my neighbors never even know I am practicing or complain. Cost is a factor but once things are sorted out , there are cheaper ways to train with the AR platform. It is my go to weapon for carrying in a backpack pistol with hundreds of rounds .

Relevance to me; replaced my 308 bolt action with 18" PSA 300 BL AR, this was dad's rifle (old mil/sporterised that shoots sub moa) that I gave to my nephew, my shoulder wanted something less punishing but still 30 cal, chose over 7.62x39 for versatility of the lower, less than 2" group @100yds. With 3 different rounds so far, able to replace upper with 223/556. A very viable option for me for a medium caliber rifle capable of ethical deer hunting, but more versatile than the bolt action. No this rifle is not capable of consistently placing 3 rounds in a quarter size circle, at point of aim, at 100yds like the bolt action. Yes this rifle/round is capable of meeting my needs of a rifle. So, comparing with the cost of good rounds for the 308, a good choice for me. You can find .300BLK in bulk for like .70 cents a round. The cost claim is quickly diminishing with current production capacities. Also, 110gr .300BLK out of a 10” barrel has the same if not slightly more ft/lbs than 5.56 out of a 16” barrel. So even in supersonic velocities .300BLK kicks ass.

Comparing supersonic .300 blk with 7.62x39 however is fair, since it has almost the same trajectory but from a shorter barrel and allowing more capacity and parts compatibility with the 5.56 (like the BCG).

@Richard McDonald idk where you are at but 6.5 Grendel is fairly abundant in Arizona. I think it will continue to gain popularity and become more available in years to come. Irregardless of what all these online spec sheet chasing youngsters say about the 6mm ARC being superior (talk about hard to find ammo)! Lol! 6mm ARC has slightly less bullet drop, at the expense of half the barrel life of a 6.5mm Grendel. 6mm ARC ammo is 10 times harder to find, it's twice as expensive & no subsonic options. With all that in mind, I feel that the 6.5 Grendel is the greatest do all AR round ever and I cannot see anything coming out anytime soon that could rival it's power and versatility. I had issues with my 1st 6.5 Grendel build and have discovered that they seem to require heavy buffers to function properly. I'm on my 3rd 6.5 Grendel build now. It's a super lightweight monolithic upper, pinned & welded 14.5 inch barreled scout rifle AR. I aim to make Marine Col. Jeff Cooper smile from Heaven :-) with this build! It will be my Do-all/every situation rifle. Light enough for run & gun and powerful enough for larger game with welk placed shots. IMHO, 6.5 Grendel is the greatest thing to ever happen to the AR15 platform and I am super surprised that the Military hasn't utilized this great round....

@Richard McDonald (going on just what I have experienced in my travels) it seems like some places in the South have surprisingly strict laws on guns & trucks. I can't help but wonder if AZ's laxed gun control has something to do with our abundance of ammo. Of course, the mass Granola exodus from California that is infesting my state are already hard at work, trying to turn it into the same expensive and restricted shit hole that they just ran away from! In regards to the 6.5G bolts being prone to breaking, this is the 1st I've heard about it but being that I know that the issue exists with 7.62x39 AR bolts, it makes sense. We'll, I learned something new and will look into it. I would think the the issue could be overcome with our advanced modern day metallurgy. Perhaps it's not cost effective to do so? On the other hand, the new Spear rifle isn't exactly cheap either. From my personal experiences with government contracts, I can't help but wonder if company/manufacturer/distributor politics, palms not getting enough grease and lack of cash filled envelopes sliding under conference tables might not at least be part of it. One thing that I am sure of is that I will probably end up knowing as much about the why as I do the who on "the grassy knoll. Lol

@@cardboardkiller6883 I still wonder if we, the US Mil, really procure anything on a truly need and application basis. For the longest time, complaints about the terminal ballistics of the 5.56 could have been fixed by changing the projectile. M16-A2 with 1:7 twist would spin a 75 grain bullet far and fast enough to be more lethal at longer distances. Now we're looking and spending to get a projectile no one will be using but US. We used to look for interoperability, NATO uses the same ammo. So, we get a system that defeats level ? body armor at ranges the average soldier can't shoot. My M16A1 MER was 460 meters in a 100-meter, NAM environment. Cut the barrel and go to a 400+ meter environment, the SAND, but complain the round won't stop the fight fast enough. My first build back in 2018 was a 300 blk out pistol originally with a 10.5 barrel, a non-adjustable gas block, and a cheap parkerized BCG. It ran everything I put through it. At the time, I had no idea that the different barrels chambered for the same round could have different gas port sizes. It's now running a 12.5 CMMG SBN treated barrel, not sure of the gas port size, but again, it feeds EVERYTHING reliably. Subs, suppers, suppressed, unsuppressed, doesn't matter, it runs. It's crazy to think a manufacturer can't figure out how to develop a gun to run reliably. It's even more frustrating to hear ppl bash it bc their equipment is finicky... not saying you're bashing the round or system by the way, but it sounded a bit like your statement was towards all 300 blk outs after your experience with this one firearm. Funny enough though, I've always had bad experiences with high ticket firearms/firearm parts, but my budget friendly stuff seems to be plug and play and functions as reliably as my old duty rifle in the service.

Very interesting review. My thoughts for what they're worth (maybe not much for some). I built a 300 Blackout firearm using a custom blend of components with a 10.5 barrel and a Superlative Arms Adjustable Gas Block. I was able to tune the Gas Block to run Supers with no problem, but it has to be suppressed to run Subs repeatedly and with lock back. Since I primarily run it with a can that is fine for me. I also use dedicated 300 Blackout mags. 1. So that I never mix 5.56 or .223 ammo with it or a 5.56 or .223 firearm and 2. because they feed better than 5.56 or .223 mags. Most folks know to never mistakenly run a 300 Blackout round through a 5.56/.223 firearm (catastrophic) or vice versa (bad day!), but I thought it worth mentioning. One of my buddies has a Wilson Combat firearm which is able to run Supers and Subs without a can due to how the gas port is designed. I believe one other manufacturer has made a firearm for a while that also can run Supers and Subs without a can, but the name escapes me. I recently purchased a Spear LT in 300 Blackout and it also can run Supers and Subs without a can, although it will not have last round hold open without the 2 position Gas Block being on the Suppressed setting. I replaced the Muzzle Brake and put on a Lantac Dragon so that I could use my existing Dead Air Sandman Suppressor, although I'll eventually purchase the Sig Suppressor made for the Spear LT and reinstall the Sig Muzzle Brake that came with the firearm. Finally, I hope Chris forgives the Engineer in me to state that Energy is 1/2*Mass*Velocity Squared, not just Mass*Velocity, so the Velocity has much more to do with Energy than just Mass. The energy of a 220 grain Sub round is roughly equivalent to 45 Caliber pistol round (interestingly enough 300 Blackout Rounds use Pistol Powders vs Rifle Powders which is one reason why they can run through shorter barrels). Thanks for indulging my long winded essay Gentlemen and keep up the great, honest and always interesting reviews. Your loyal Patron!

My 16" is a hog and deer of choice up to 200-250 yards. 147 grain 300 BLK is 100% just to be cheap. It's really easy to source 147 bullets due to it being the standard grain weight for 308/7.62NATO. 200-220 grain is for subs, supers should be about 100 to 120 for some extra velocity. Guns in 300 BLK should always be able to run subs, it's the entire point of 300 BLK.
@TheMinutemanArmory
@TheMinutemanArmory Жыл бұрын
It's actually NOT the entire point of 300BLK, but just another internet myth that has continued to be perpetrated and only become viable in the last year with bullets designed to expand at subsonic velocity. The purpose was a SOCOM solicitation for a cartridge that would meet or exceed the terminal ballistics of a 124gr 7.62x39 fired from a 12.5" AK104 using the M4 platform and a barrel 10.3" or shorter with minimal unsuppressed flash. You aren't getting that performance with subs and the flash signature/short barrel performance was achieved using the fast burning pistol powders to crank up chamber pressure fast and burn off within 7.5-9". At the time it was developed, the only .308 projectiles available for subsonic use were heavy .308 used for 300WM, WSM, 30-06, and .308 WIN, all of which require supersonic velocity to perform terminally. These rounds, while on paper seem superior to 9mm and 45 ACP by the numbers, would be moving too slowly and stable to have terminal effect on a soft target and would just pass completely through. Terminal performance requires tumbling at a minimum and either expansion or fragmentation to truly wound in a capacity to down an animal humanely or stop a threat.

Awesome video. I own only one semi-auto rifle and it's an AR in 300 Blackout. I don't need the reach and appreciate the quietness. Of course I run it with a can. Here in France suppressors are not regulated and there is no limit as to how many 300Blk rounds you can store, unlike the 5.56, which is limited to 1000 rounds per registered weapon. I know, it makes no sense, gun laws usually don't. A box of 20 Sub-X rounds here costs around $45, cheapest subs around $25/box (rifle prices are 2X$ compared to the U.S.) .. I reload... It is a necessity when shooting the 300Blk. The gun (Anderson) cycles factory subs and supers with no issues though I am still working on a sub load that runs reliably using French powders. I wanted a versatile 300m rifle and that's what I got... BTW I would love to see you make a video on your production process, lightning, etc.

Would be interesting if you guys could get a hold of a BCM. I have a LaRue Tactical 12” in .300 and it runs like a champ. I also have and MCX Virtus 9” that I run with a OSS can that works great. Wish the ammo was cheaper. 🤣

I actually ran a couple mags through one and it ran like a champ and suppressed very well

If you shop around and buy in bulk you can get it for much cheaper then $1 around. With that being said I built my 300 specifically with cqb in mind ie great for home defense noise and over over penetration in mind. Hard part was finding a way to build the gun with the CA law ie non nfa items. 12.5 barrel to keep velocity down with, adjustable gas block and whitt machine sme pinned and welded

And I love .300blk, it’s the ultimate for your edc truck/backpack/bedside/cqb gun imho. Can even hunt deer with it, very nice round.

It's a red dot like the Sig 8T. I did a video review on it. Looking forward to the syndicate take.

It's like an 8T but the shroud is reversed and screws moved slightly on a visual level. The performance on paper seems the same too. That being said if it's a clone for way cheaper he'll yeah.

Yeah, seems like an interesting optic, though I cancelled my preorder on one just for the weight alone. Not much lighter than its 8T counterpart, and that thing was a pig for just being a dot sight.

On the function issues- an o-ring (BCM kit) on the extractor typically fixes those issues. Not a fan of relying on temporary add-ons, but was that tried when fixing your gun?

I have taken 2 mature white tail bucks with my 10.5 Barnes tac tx 110 grain. Even with supers, I wouldn’t take a shot past 100 yards as it just isn’t ethical. But 100 and in, it is a very deadly round. Compares a lot to the the old reliable 30-30.

Being in the middle of a very expensive SR30 build I was like “uh-oh am I going to regret this build?” Just sent my blood money & finger prints to the constitution haters 9 days ago. I understand the limits of this build but It’s for home defense along with my USP 45tac. Felt better after watching the video cause I really respect your opinions/reviews.🤙🏻

Interesting to hear about how the 300blk guns were used in military situations. Mine is built from a PSA Marauder upper. Changed the handguard, added a 9mm Wolfman suppressor, and it shot supers just fine, but the only time I had issues was doing subs. A buffer spring from Nemo fixed it, but so far I can't run all subs. Pretty under gassed, it will only shoot this one specific type of sub ammo so far, and with the suppressor on. Otherwise it doesn't cycle correctly. Maybe open the gas port is next but I dunno at this point. But I can do home defense with it, just reliable enough for that.

I totally understand your frustration w the builder of the rifle. I built my first one and thank GOD i used an adjustable gas block because after opening that almost all the way open, it still needed a super heavy buffer. I sold it, never was fully reliable. However I then purchased a Radian Arms 9 inch upper almost 4 years ago, and have yet to have a single malfunction. Still put a heavy buffer in it, and its a bit overgassed w my 110 grain Barnes Tac TX reloads, but I'm getting 2400 fps, under 1 MOA, and stellar virtually zero malfunctions.

The opening was great absolutely love it. Also it’s 300 blackout… it’s designed to be quiet why would you build it to be supersonic i got 5.56 for that, and I bet the twist rate is 1/7 instead of being 1/5 8.6 blackout I’m interested in it for hunting 100 yards and in I won’t be taking any long distance shots with it.

If you aren't using it for CQB. I use 300 blk supers for hog hunting at night where we can sneak in to less that 150 yds with night vision. With a short barrel and short shots the 300 blk is more effective than 5.56. For longer shots I would use 6.5 grendel. The 5.56 is obsolete unless you are doing joint NATO exercise.
