Supersonic loads, subsonic loads, big bullets, and high-level performance when things are up close and personal - the .300 Blackout is an excellent cartridge for the AR Platform, as well as bolt rifles. This cute cartridge serves a variety of roles pretty darn well. Compare it to the 30-30 Win. for hunting and you may take a hard look. Listen in to hear the Vortex Nation Podcast team chat all about it.

This was my project at AAC and Remington, and I will add to this conversation about why we created 300 BLK when 300 Whisper(R) already existed. The first was that 300 Whisper was not a SAAMI cartridge, and without it being in SAAMI, Remington and other large ammo companies would not load for it. Second, the military wanted to be able to switch from subsonic to supersonic and not have to adjust the gas block. I worked with Remington to create subsonic loads that purposely made more gas so that they would cycle the action that was set up for supersonic. 300 Whisper, at least how it was commonly loaded with fast powders, would not do this. Third, we created custom bullets that were 110-115 grain but with a very large ogive so that they would be magazine-length. This prevented them from shifting forward in the magazine if bumped. The long ogive was designed to have the same diameter at the rib of the magazine that normally rested on the case neck as the neck of a 5.56mm case. This kept the rounds from canting inwards, which allowed you to load a full 30 rounds without hanging up in the magazine. Not every ammo company understood any or all of this, and even today, many or most don't. I had permission from Remington to not keep it a trade secret because we wanted the cartridge to succeed, and so were open to helping other ammo companies. We worked with Hornady, Barnes, and some others. Also, 300 BLK is the first cartridge that was used by the military with expanding projectiles. As for the name, the official name is 300 AAC Blackout, and the short name is 300 BLK. There are no other names. Also, 300 doesn't begin with a "." 300 BLK has more energy from a 9 inch barrel than 5.56mm from a 16 inch barrel, making the supersonic particularly good for SBRs or PDWs. I am using a 6.5" barrel myself, and the military uses 5.5, 6.75, and 7.75, but started with our 9 inch barrels for the first combat use. The problem with 7.62x39 is that it doesn't really work in an AR. I tried it for a while, and broke three bolts due to the larger boltface. If you load an AR-style magazine, it jams up if you put in more than about 10 rounds. Also, the case is too large for efficient subsonic use.

@@johnburke5087 I just got my first 300 blk pistol 10.5 inch barrel. I plan on using subs with my dead air wolfman I've been waiting on for 7 months (along with 9mm subs). I'm going to use supersonics for deer hunting. Maybe do a little target shooting with both. With the cost of 300blk rounds, nobody is shooting it but me 😂. I'll let good friends shoot a few of my 9mm bullets on occasion and I love mag dumping 9mm, 7.62x39, and 5.56 but I don't plan on dumping hundreds of rounds at a time with 300blk. Pay extra for the rifle and ammo chambered in .308. Everything else is just plinking. If it can't humanely dispatch a deer at 200 yds. It's just plinking. I've SEEN the results of a lowily PCC Hi-Point in 45acp take down wild hogs. It's cheap and ugly and looks Korean War instead of Terminator. Effectiveness, multi-purpose vs "Kewl Lookin" for "Gamer Bois".....308 the MINIMUM for everything. Wish there was actually one chambered 30-06...YEAH, it takes a MAN to carry it. I have my 300blk 8.5" AR PDW/Truck gun, a 11.5" upper receiver for hunting, & my Encore Pro Hunter 6" pistol barrel with a 1-5 twist. And I use my suppressor on all three firearms. Amen to that I love all the different ballistic tips you can get for 300blk out. I'm running 150grain ballistic tipped deer hunter round from winchester and also 110grain hornady gmx custom the are thumpers too. I had no issue shooting out to 500m with my heavy cold forged 16inch barrel with 1.8 twist and it's my favourite rifles aswell it's effective to 400to 500m then the drop really starts to kick in running a vortex 1-6x24 strike eagle on 6 power and a 45* canted sig romeo redot as second and cqc hasn't skipped a beat thinks its had 4 malfunction jams and 2 of those were dud bullets that didn't ignite if you get a 300 black out in a tactical platform like myself I suggest you get a 16 inch heavy cold forged barrel takes ages to heat up and cools really quickly. Pull ballisticly speaking the peak ballistics from a 300blk out round is 16 inch. You could get away with a 14 plus a 2 inch suppressor but fella 16 is where you wanna be at

Excellent discussion on the 300 BLK!!! Thank you for posting this. There seems to be far more 300 BLK naysayers than proponents, but I love my 300 BLK carbine and pistol. I might have missed the words in the video so forgive me if you said this, but this cartridge gets its high performance in a small package because it uses pistol powder, not rifle powder. It’s an ingenious design! I handload and I use 110 gr Nosler Varmageddon bullets: 2415 fps in my carbine; 2200 fps in my pistol. As long as I hunt within the bullet’s kinetic envelope (which you must do for ANY bullet), the 300 BLK is a solid performer. That many dead feral hogs can’t be wrong. Lightweight, accurate, and reliable.

Take a look at Maker Rex bullets. They do some amazing things in critters at sub sonic speeds. 300blk is a fantastic cartridge for hand loading. The selection of bullets in 30cal are second to none. The powder charges are small so a little goes a long way. One of the most unique aspects of the cartridge is the ability to shoot semi auto subs and supers back to back, no changes needed in a properly speced AR. There aren't a lot of center fire cartridges that you can do that with.

The 300BLK subsonic loadings may burn all their powder charge in 9", but supersonic loadings have been proven to still gain velocity and therefore energy in 16-20" barrels. This fact disproves the often repeated statement that 300BLK burns all it's powder in a 9" barrel. Reference Mrgunsngear 300BLK videos.

Both have rails though the CVA is a Weaver rail. I have compact red dots mounted at the forward end of the rails. This allows the rifle to be carried at its balance point. These two both make great close range stalking rifles for deer hunting. The Barnes 110 grain VorTX load is deadly on deer, and always passes through. I absolutely love that layout.

I know you made this video over a year ago, but I can't believe that none of the three of you have a 300 BLK gun. I am a super fan of 300 BLK. I didn't get into AR platform guns until I was 62, but my very first was an [original] Sig MCX, 300 BLK with a 16" barrel. I currently have four 300 BLK guns, from 10.3 AR style to a 16" bolk gun in an MDT precision chassis, and I just bought another one that I can't wait to get, a Sig Spear LT in 300 BLK 9" pistol. To say that 300 BLK is my favorite cartridge is an understatement. In my not so humble opinion, I believe it is a far superior cartridge to the 5.56. The 5.56 will be around forever just because it is prolific throughout the world and it has such a storied history, but I personally don't own a 5.56 and can't think of any reason to own one, other than shire availability and cost of ammunition. I can afford 300 BLK and keep plenty on hand. The 300 BLK will never take the place of 5.56, that will be the job of 6mm ARC, but that is a story for a different day. On a different issue, I 100% concur with Ryan. I would not take, or recommend, anyone trying to take down a whitetail deer with 300 BLK subsonics at anything over 50 yds. I have shot a lot and I have chronographed a lot of 300 BLK. A 220 gr 300 BLK drops like a stone after 50 yds. Personally, I see 300 BLK as having about the same distance and terminal effect on a white tail as a high end crossbow. Thanks for making the video, it was an interesting discussion.

Thank You for acknowledging J.D. Jones and the Whisper. I was shooting Silhouettes at the time. We were shooting it before I ever heard of the Black Out. However, outside of the Silhouette range, I’m having a tough time nailing the Black Out down to a specific role. I shoot it suppressed but it is also useful with the lighter bullets going faster. It’s almost like I need two scopes on the rifle, zeroed for the different loadings. Oh yeah! Earned a new sub.

300 BLK - versatile cartridge with a lot of neat applications. Like the man said, you can have a short barrel and get similar performance from it as if you were shooting a 16+. The ability to shoot different grain weights and suppress it near silent is pretty, dare I say "rad"? I am still trying to dial in my 220 grains at 100 yards. And discreet ballistics makes a fun subsonic cartridge.

Its a neat little cartridge that is close enough terminally to several other calibers in dia and energy. It shares a bolt face and mag length with a popular cartridge and uses common slow pistol powders. Its good enough at everything that it's boring and a barrel swap away.

Dropped my first deer this year in her tracks at 167 yards with a Q mini fix 300 blk, nomad ti, trijicon accupoint 3-9, black hills 110 gr ttsx. I did miss a buck at what i estimate to be 200-250 yards earlier that day. I didn’t realize he was quite that far and think the bullet went under him is the best i can come up with. I wanted to use the hornady subsonic 190 gr but I could not get it to group well at all, bullet drop is significant after 80-100 yards and I was told it sometimes doesn’t even expand or that well.

I bought a 300 blackout and love it more than I thought it would. I have an AKM clone and it seems that recoil is significantly greater. Granted we are talking about a piston gun vs DI, but the AKM definitely hits the shoulder a bit harder. The .300 hits it less. I am left with the impression that in close 7.62x39 has a bit more power. But I love the precision of my AR in .300 within its effective range.

I have a Howa in 7.62X39 as well as an AR upper. I reload and yet like the availability of 7.62X39 in factory ammo. I practice with steel case and use brass case empties to reload with Barnes bullets. They are deadly on deer out to 200 to 250 yards. In the Howa I can push pressure beyond AR pressures safely and rivals the 45-70 with better balistics. The biggest draw back most 300 blk out fans spout as their advantage over the 7.62X39 is bullet availability. What they don't know or won't say is that .308 bullets also work in the 7.62X39 cases. In fact the Lee dies come with both .308 and .311 expander plugs. In the AR platform for extended use the blk out does have the advantage of the beefier bolt lugs however case for case I prefer the 7.62X39.

I've been loading 300 BLK for about two year's now, and I still think its funny how Little powder is used in the subsonic loads, I just wish the price on primers would come down a bit, and that the availability would come back to normal so we can start buying bricks again, my LGS is still limiting primer sales to 3 packages of 100. Also, I've done the .223 to 300BLK brass conversion and it adds a little extra fun and sense of accomplishment when reloading, I do turn the necks just to be sure they're not too thick. In my 300Blk AR I've had to play with buffer weight to function my sub loads, but my Ruger ranch rifle Loves the Hornady 225gr ELD match using Hodgdon Lil'gun. And of course suppressed.

It's a fun little cartridge. No suppressors allowed in my state, so I got an upper with a 16" barrel. For me, it's a better close-range home defense rifle than an AR in 5.56, and one I would feel better about deer hunting with. Mine is mostly supersonics only except if I find cheap subs to plink with.

@cristianespinal9917
@cristianespinal9917 2 жыл бұрын
@@brighthought11 I was looking for an upper for medium game hunting that was minimal fuss to swap, so really it was never 7.62x39 that was its competition for me. The .300 Blk's competition were calibers like .450 Bushmaster, .50 Beowulf, 6.5 Grendel. I consider all of these good enough for me to be confortable to use on deer, hogs, or black bear under 100 yards. It came down to finding a crazy good deal on a .300 Blackout upper by chance. Then I started to really like the cartridge. With supersonics, the flash, noise, and concussion are much lower than a 5.56's with a 16" barrel. Even the subsonics are a joy to shoot. Subs basically take the .300 Blackout from a rifle to a super high-BC pistol caliber carbine. So I slowly got together the parts, when they were on sale, to make it its own rifle. Now that I'm handloading for it, one thing I want to do is some silly and stupid fun. I want to load some 220 grain Hornady ELD-X subsonics, work up an accurate load, zero it at 100 yards and shoot it at 200 yards (longest distance at any nearby range) to mimic longer-range shooting. Plus, if/when I move to a more gun-friendly state, I can get a pistol lower, 10-12" barrel, and a can for it. That would leave it about the same length as its current configuration while taking full advantage of the cartridge's features.

Last year, I was in the market for a lightweight bolt gun to hunt the puny local white tails. The Ruger American Ranch is chambered in both 300 BO and 7.62x39. I eventually decided on the 7.62x39 because of the availability of inexpensive bulk ammo for practice. But, I did end up having to load my own hunting ammo. Luckily, Nosler makes .310 caliber 123 grain bullets Just for the task. I’ve been thinking of an AR “handgun” chambered in 300 BO for handgun-only hunting areas.

I've been shooting for years but this recent deer season was my first year hunting. I shot my first deer ever in November, a 90 pound doe with a 150 grain .308 vmax at 30-40 yards and it did massive damage to the shoulder. I had a 6 point in my scope last week at 25 yards but it ran when I clicked the safety off, lesson learned. Considering that the few deer that I saw from my tree stand were 100 yards or closer and 200 yards being the max (I'm also in the dense southern woods) Im going to use 300blk next season to do less damage but still have enough power. I brought my 5.56 out a couple times and missed a couple does at 100 since the zero was off the red dot, also went out with my AK one day and 12 gauge slugs a bunch in the early season. I think the 300blk will be the perfect round with my dead air wolfman suppressor though
