I check eBay for this bike with no luck. And you come up on one. For 300 no less. Yeah I'm jealous.

@@wannabecarguy Forget eBay mate anything that's on eBay goes for silly money especially bikes like the the DTMX everyone knows how good they are and a bidding war usually ensues as soon as something nice turns up. Anything Japanese from the 70's and early 80's is now highly sought after bikes like the RD's and RDLC's DT's and MK1 DTLC's Honda XL's and XR's Kawasaki Triples Z9's and Z1000's early air cooled Suzuki's like the GT range etc have skyrocketed not forgetting the Trials and Motocross bikes. Over here in the UK you just can't find them for reasonable money any more because everyone has jumped on the bandwagon even the project bikes with parts missing and needing a good amount of work are bringing strong money especially the Yamaha RD's. All I can say is scour your neighbourhood ask around and keep your ear to the ground you "May, just get lucky might take a while but you never know.

I had an earlier model 125 with electric start, but I never replaced the starter because I always used the kick starter. I bought new front fender with a mudflap to keep mud of the engine. A new expansion chamber high pipe for creek crossing, 21 inch Yamaha wheel, knobby tires, a real enduro tag holder with brake light, I had one mirror left side held on with a hose clamp. When I went down all I had to do was move the mirror back. Change sprockets regularly, new chains, plastic gas tank, several batteries, and several different needle valves with the pipe. I miss the bike because it was a blast in the back country.

Woah! Excellent! I had the 175 version and used it daily for 4+ years. Excellent bike! With the mono-shock rear suspension this is called the DT MX series in the UK. i've also owned a DT250 MX. I suggest you throw the exhaust in a bath full of caustic soda (lye) overnight. Then flush it out with a hosepipe. Shake it about and maybe tap the sides with a piece of wood to loosen up the crap inside as much as you can. Yep, clean the carb too. You can make up some side panels out of UPVC sheet/board and plastic edging, using the existing grommets. Fill the fuel tank with cola and leave it a couple of days. Allegedly this technique is works on old slot car track to remove light rust. Great fun restoring old bikes!
@5150mxVW4 жыл бұрын
seems most had the 175 , I checked , the crank is the same on the 125 & 175 ...so is the base gasket...175 top end swap :) . Thank you for the tips , I have the tank soaking in apple cider vinegar right now .
@wordreet4 жыл бұрын
@@5150mxVW Yeap, vinegar's good for light rust too. Best easy power mods you can do are, two stage reed valve, (more bottom and power and better revving) oiled cone air filter, unless you live in a really dusty area (gets rid of airbox, ), And bigger carb jets/needle. It'll feel like a bigger bike after that. If you're going to ride it off-road a lot, I recommend ditching the 2stroke oil pump and just running oil/fuel mix in the tank. I have tips for suspension mods too! 👍

Great bikes the old DT125/175MX's I had/built a succession of them around eighteen years ago I ran adds for DT parts wanted and ended up driving for miles on occasion picking stuff up like panels tanks wheels mudguards/fenders engines and rolling chassis. Over time I built up out of parts sourced quite a number of them before selling them on to people I once built one using a DTMX chassis and engine and early YZ125 forks wheels plastic tank and panels etc rebuilt the motor with all new parts and fitted Hi Tek racing reeds up jetted the carb and put a Fresco tail pipe on it it went like the clappers. In the end when I started moving on to other bikes I had half a large shed full of parts just for the DTMX and sold them off for a few hundred pounds and who'd have guessed it NOW they're worth a fortune and most of them hard to get when you want them. Your bike looks very tidy she's pretty clean on the whole chrome looks good as does the paint on the tank and the seat is in good nick too so that's saved you a few dollars the seats on these old bikes usually need recovering so that's one less job needed. Side panels can still be picked up on eBay for 20/30 bucks (pounds here in the UK) but NOS stuff will always cost a good bit more and the mudguards for these can still be picked up on occasion. Strip the top end off it put in new rings and little end bearing and a piston if needed fit a new top end gasket set and that'll sort the compression out remove the carb and give it a real good clean out and replace the reeds with either new originals or a set of race reeds like Hi Tek etc give it an oil change and if the motor in general is good that should be all it needs to bring it back up to scratch ... quite fancy another myself now looking at yours ;) Just a side note, you'd be better removing the jubilee clip from the carburettor inlet rubber and replace it with a standard clip as these wider clips tend to "bite into" the rubber and either help to cause small splits "or, help to open up age old stress cracks that will then suck air through them as the bike is running and these inlet rubbers "do crack and split over the years so would be worth examining just to make sure its good.

Had a 1981 model when i was teen. That one had an aluminum rear swing. In sweden, these engines was tuned down due to law regulations. It made only 80km/h. With help of an die grinder, i grinded off the restrictor in the exhaust port, got a bigger bend for that exhaust, and pulled off that end silencer. It was a new bike! Made over 130km/h! Great bike! I soon overhauled the engine with new bearings and seals. Then a sold it. If I'm not totally out, you can fit the 175cc cylinder to them. They'll run like hell.

Dt 125MX... i had the M... the M had the shocks come down at the rear left and right with separate shocks coming from the frame down to each side of the wheel, the MX had a Y frame just for the mono suspension that was under the seat... good bike, lot of happy memories and not hard to work on.. Oh, because it was a single pot 2 stroke, these bikes were famous for shattering the pistons, not going to say now often i changed pistons but it was a lot.Pro Tip: always carry a spark plug spanner under the seat, these things loved to foul the spark plug with crap.. take out spark plug, tap the crap out, carry on your way...don’t ask me how I learned to carry a plug spanner, lets just say I’ll save you a few miles walking ..

First of all, i absolutely love the DT125MX bikes, it's my dream to have one of them at some point! Yours doesn't seem to bad, it sounded good! I don't know about the 125, but the DT50MX has basically no compression either, it's a combination of just original low compression, a very long kickstarter, and a low geared one at that. So i don't think yours necessarily has very bad compression! Also it might start a lot easier if you use the choke, my DT50:s does at least, if you don't use it you can kick forever without result but if you use it it starts up right away, it's that black "button" on the carb, you pull it out for choke
@5150mxVW4 жыл бұрын
You could be right , the last few bikes I owned were KX450's and a few 250 2 strokes so I might be used to those . I will do a compression test on it . As for that " black button " :) , I pull it at 6:12 in the vid. Thank you Erik👍

@@5150mxVW - Look up DT250 on my channel as well as "1986 to 1992 Yamaha XT350 in 3.5 hours" and you can see my old DT400. The 250 was blue and the DT400 was well, Red?? lol

My very first motorcycle I bought was a 1972 DT125. I paid $1 for it. Cost me almost $700 to get it running in 1980
@5150mxVW4 жыл бұрын

Don't laugh to hard Jason even I had once dragged home a 1974 Harley Davidson sx125 I bought for a hundred bucks that had more d-con mouse poison hidden in every place you wouldn't think possible. But found parts got it running and just as I remembered when I was a kid riding one it went like a little rocket ship. Great find on the Yamaha and certainly hope your not giving up on Volkswagen's 😁👍👍👍
@5150mxVW4 жыл бұрын
Nice , those SX's are very sought after these days . Good to hear you had one as a kid👍.

Você tava pedalando com a gasolina fechada, kkkk depois pedalou com ela sem se na reserva, acho mais fácil na reserva de ligar, quando tá muito tempo parada e n quer ligar melhor da um tranco pq jodeia muito do Kick
